Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

I am using the GOW azelaic acid too, using it twice a week and really liking it so far.

SophieLion · 17/06/2018 20:31

Thanks Shop. What do you mean by "texture" exactly? Has your skin gone bumpy ? The instructions in my tube say to start off once a day (evenings) for the first week if sensitive skin and then twice a day. It seems it can cause redness as it says to reduce applications if redness occurs. It itches me a bit when I put it on.

ThanksJDSTER and for you too Mint Thanks---- and Bo Thanks

Thanks for the Dr Meghan link Bo. I'll take a look. I'm quite into wellness and "you are what you eat" so sounds interesting.
I'm not using an GOW products but watching with interest - especially the vit C. Thanks

Violet18 · 17/06/2018 20:50

I'm an oily skin person too. I also use the LRP Toleriane Fluide in the pm. However, if my skin is feeling tight or dehydrated (usually on a BHA night and usually the morning after) I swap it out for the Rosette Ceramide Gel, which I haven't used much yet, so can't review at the mo.

miffy2 · 17/06/2018 20:51

You are what you eat...fully describes me today. Had a late lunch/early evening with my girlfriends on Friday and stuck to 3 drinks, went to the gym yesterday morning, had a busy day and ate well. Today? Ate chocolate, biscuits and sweets (as well as regular food) and lots of brown bread. Ended up snoozing on the sofa which I NEVER do, and am going to go to bed in the next 20 minutes. Back to regular, improved habits tomorrow morning!

I have also added GOW AA to my VH basket . Will check it out in a day or two.

Nofilter · 17/06/2018 20:55

Hello Ladies,

Question if I may?

I’m finding my products are building up now I’m using this Topical angel and kind of ending up in bits all over my skin, wondered if it’s to do with the order of application maybe?

I asked the GP if I could stick to usual skincare routine and she said yes.

Here’s my routine:

LRP Cleanser
LRP Thermal Water
Metronidazole - leave 5 minutes
Superdrug super hydrating serum
Cerave PM moisturiser
Frezyderm in morning only

Thanks!!

Nofilter · 17/06/2018 20:56

I’ve also been using

LRP Baume B5 (a couple of times in the last 7 days) as my skin looks very dehydrated from lack of care for a few years really...

Thanks

Shop · 17/06/2018 21:39

Sophie yes a little bumpy, not all over, either side of my mouth. To be fair to the skinoren I stopped using any other aha or bha although I do use the Paulas Choice Clinical 1% retinol every night.

EnidButton · 17/06/2018 22:31

Thank you bo. Flowers It's all still very weird.

JD FlowersCakeBrew

Not much to report. I'm still wheat free and reaping the benefits from that. Had some teeth issues this week which will hopefully be sorted out ASAP. Ate copious amounts of chocolate yesterday and some ice cream today. To be fair it was dark choc (because milk choc is too bland for me) so antioxidants and all that. Trying to get things back to (a new) normal really so not much else going on. Bought some nail polish today, a nice brightish pink, a light aubergine and a pinky red. Painting my nails is so satisfying! It took me until I was 36 to learn how so it makes me happy.
💗

SophieLion · 18/06/2018 04:29

Hi Enid, sending you ❤️ and Thanks**
I like having painted nails too. I'm currently wearing Watermelon from Essie which is a lovely colour for the summer. Good luck with the teeth and hope the issue is sorted soon.

Shop,** strange about the bumps being around your mouth only....

Bluebell9 · 18/06/2018 10:30

Bo I'm using the GOW AA at the moment, its been a couple of weeks now and my skin is smoother and clearer. I've got the GOW Vit C sat waiting too but I'm going to wait until I've sorted out my SPF so I'm not trying too many new products at once.

If I'm using Vit C I'd need to avoid putting niacinamide on at the same time wouldn't I? Can anyone recommend a light moisturiser that doesnt have niacinamide in please?

PickledHoneybuzzard · 18/06/2018 13:07

miffy2 I'm a NuFace user. I have CACI every three weeks and use the NuFace roughly every other day in between to maintain the effect. If I don't use the NuFace in between the CACI makes a massive difference, if I do the CACI definitely improves eyelids and neck but doesn't make so much difference to cheeks and jowls.
On its own it would make a difference but for me not enough to justify the price tag as I would have cheek fillers as well.
The thing with all microcurrent treatments is that they are exercising muscles so you have to keep doing them to maintain the effect, after all you wouldn't go to the gym once and expect the effect to be instant and last for ever!
I also have RF treatment on my chin which is amazing, I initially had three treatments and now have one a year as a top up. The doctor who does the RF always comments on my face shape and volume, he offers a number of treatments and fillers and has told me not to bother with them as I won't improve on the current effect with CACI and NuFace.
However you need a CACI therapist who knows what they are doing, I've had one who didn't and it was a complete waste of money.

miffy2 · 18/06/2018 17:38

Thanks, Pickled, that was very informative. I will look into it all further :)

bonfireheart · 18/06/2018 17:53

Has anyone heard of a company called Valjeans? I saw their products in TK Maxx today and was interested in their 'Hydrate Hyaluronic Acid & Vitamin B5 Facial Serum."
I found this on makeupalley which has good reviews for it but tbh I can't find much about them...

www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemId=196941/Valjean-Labs---Hydrate-Hyaluronic-Acid-+-Vitamin-B5-Facial-Serum/Unlisted-Brand/Treatments-(Face)

I am really in need of something to hydrate my skin so advice really appreciated. This is my routine at the moment:

AM
Hylamide High Efficiency Cleanser
Corsx Low PH Cleanser
Body Shop Skin Defence with SPF

PM
The Hylamide again
Alternate with Corsx and NIOD Sanskrit Saponins
Alternate with Epiduo (Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide) and the Ordinary's Azelaic Acid
The Ordinary's Natural Moisturising Factors
Body Shop Skin Defence

JDSTER · 18/06/2018 18:14

Thanks all. Enid you’ve been in my thoughts Flowers.
Medik 8 crystal retinal arrived today. Excited to try a new active. I have high hopes.....

bluebell LRP toleriane fluide is very light. Works well after Vit C

mintmagnummm · 18/06/2018 20:13

I got my new spf today so will be trying it in the morn! It's the one hot and flashy RAVES about! I'm really anxious as I desperately want to find an spf I love!!

TantricTwist · 18/06/2018 20:31

My skin looks like crap today. Texture is awful and under skin spots.

It could either be the Liz Earle C&P, Ultrasun spf, TO retinol, Haagen Dazs salted caramel ice cream or Sauvignon Blanc from the other night.

Bit pissed off with referee in the England game at the moment.

mintmagnummm · 18/06/2018 20:39

Oh no Tant i do sympathise with you, it's very frustrating isn't it!
My skin hated liz Earle and ultrasun so both of those would piss my skin off....

TantricTwist · 18/06/2018 21:03

I don't know what possessed me to use Liz Earle again, I really need to bin products thats dont work for me.

EnidButton · 18/06/2018 21:36

I hate Liz E C&P. It burnt my face!

EnidButton · 18/06/2018 21:36

Thank you JD Flowers

JDSTER · 18/06/2018 22:01

Tant go steady with those Haagen Dazs, delicious as they are Grin

JDSTER · 18/06/2018 22:04

Just tinted my eyelashes and they’re stinging a bit, similar to the feel of SPF getting in your eyes.

Enid when you’re wheat free what carb (if any) do you substitute with. Will you still eat rice, oatcakes, that sort of thing?

EnidButton · 18/06/2018 22:08

Yep JD. I'm wheat intolerant, not celiac as far as I know. Just do better health wise and skin wise without it. I do try to get GF muesli etc though as oats can get mixed with wheat. Gf pasta and bread is fine for the amount I eat. It's not as difficult as you'd imagine actually, so long as you check the ingredients on ready made stuff (even sauces) as wheat is added to so much stuff. I'm definitely not anti-carb! Grin

JDSTER · 18/06/2018 22:13

I’m trying to eat less wheat. I’m better during the week than at weekends when weekend lunches with the family tends to be bread, cheese, salad etc.

EnidButton · 18/06/2018 22:17

I find being at home easier than out. Tbh having just weighed myself I probably should be a bit anti carb. Put the 5lbs I lost back on. Totally fine but it goes on so easy lately. I just really like food. Smile
