Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Did I not sell it well Chester?! WinkGrin
I have many friends here who LOVE the tinted version but they are ladies who generally wear foundation etc during the day.

botemp · 18/05/2018 14:28

Quickly catching up and then running off again. Will be away for a few days.

zo, it's good to hear the Skinoren is appearing to do something, will look forward to hearing about your empties/routine at the end of the month Smile

Pupsie, Zappos has been around for forever. I think they're one of the first giant e-retailers specialising in a specific product group at competitive prices. I think the CC issue with a lot of US retailers has to do with security, they have a lot more little banks everywhere and there's generally a lot more credit card fraud, I think. So most retailers will have a policy of the delivery address having to match the address linked to the CC, similarly to PayPal.

Welcome, Confussed. It does sound a bit odd, I'm quite criticial of TO, and especially the retinols as they're not in air tight packaging (meaning they're more prone to expire quickly) and I personally ended up having a terrible reaction to a retinol of theirs after using it without issue for a few months. By my best estimation it had spoilt, their formulations and consistency in prodcuts are definitely their weakest point so I've chalked it down to that and stopped bothering with the brand altogether. I wouldn't give up on retinols completely on the back of that experience if I were you, but perhaps look into something from another brand?

mint, if you slice the onion finely and macerate it in the vinegar for a few minutes it also takes out the harshness of onions and makes it a lot easier to digest. I love a bit of peppery rocket myself but there's definitely some dodgy rocket out there that just tastes like bitter pond water Envy

I also have oil slick tumblers and wine glasses Grin

BlessYawnBless · 18/05/2018 14:47

I'm just going to jump in and say hello, having lurked on a couple of the earlier threads I'm glad to have found this one now.

This morning I sorted out various skincare hauls that I've bought in the last couple of months. There are loads of unopened products so I'm going to try to put together a routine per the OP.

Those of you who are using the LRP Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser, I think JDSTER was one, where are you buying it from? I'm sure it's the same one recommended by Dr Sam Bunting (under a slightly different name) but I haven't found it my local Boots or the local independent that sells LRP.

Also Ollivander, do you wear foundation, can you recommend any? My skin tone is very like yours and I find it quite a challenge to get foundations that don't have yellow tones. Yellow based just seems to sit on my face and look, well, yellow.

botemp · 18/05/2018 14:52

You know, Olli, I can live with the knowledge of oil slick tumblers being out there, but for whatever reason, the wine glasses are properly disturbing. Red wine must look like poison in them Shock.

I'm all for oil slick chopsticks though.

I have some interesting oil slick reference pictures for work tucked away somewhere. A floor in a loft vaguely springs to mind, it turned out all azure and looked like a swimming pool and was all sorts of marvelous. I did get to see Richard Wilson's recycled oil installation in the Saatchi gallery years ago, it was absolutely mesmerising. Very oil slicky.

Welcome, Bless I use the LRP hydrating too, I buy it from France or Belgium. EasyParaPharmacie is the easiest if you're in the UK as they have free shipping over a relatively low amount.

Thanks bo, I should have said that I'm in the UK. Thanks for the link, will have a look now.

Popping in to say hi. And I find I can answer a question, rather than being a skincare knowledge sponge. Exciting times!
Tant, I use Biore watery essence. The first time I tried it my face felt super dry and tight and I was all ready throw it out. But I switched up my moisturiser and now I’m very happy with it. I wear LRP toleraine ultra on my cheeks and LRP effaclar duo on my t zone. I will probably try something else next time - chiefly because I want to get in on the frezyderm frenzy! But if the frezyderm doesn’t work out for me, I’d happily continue with the Biore WE.
Managed to pick up the Vichy vitamin C Bo recommended. Liking it so far - tacky on initial application but that quickly settles. Seems to be helping to fade redness from spots of yore.

BlessYawnBless · 18/05/2018 15:38

Thanks for that Ollivander, I'm going shopping tomorrow and will be able to test all of those - apart from the Makeup Forever of course.

mintmagnummm · 18/05/2018 15:57

Thanks bo I shall give that a try with the onions 👍🏻

Ollivander84 · 18/05/2018 16:38

Bo, having examined more closely, the SPF 80 product is called a "antioxidant radiation guard cream" and says it does not substitute suncream. Don't understand Confused Maybe you experts can make more sense of this!

SallieSallow · 18/05/2018 18:01

Mapless you are selling the frezyderm tinted to me Grin as I'm not pale skinned - sallow/yellow as per my username! I'm going to order some but I'll probably wait a bit as still seem to have a good bit left in the normal frezyderm and also trying to use up a bioderma tinted spf.

Does anyone know how you find the shelf life for SPFs (unopened) or know how fast they go off once opened?

I find Biore spf very drying, I loved the brightening one last summer but could not use it in winter and can't use it this summer either now (think my skin has got drier due to differin use) as it makes me look all flaky and peely.

Confussed I agree with everything Bo said about TO as I had exactly the same issues where I was using stuff with no issues for a couple of months then all of a sudden started reacting. Their 1% retinol was the worst culprit for that, I thought my face was going to fall off Shock

And I love tomatoes and sea salt, especially the 'naice' cherry or baby plum tomatoes, in fact I'm going to have some right now Grin

BlessYawnBless · 18/05/2018 18:20

I've just dropped the Frezyderm SPF 50 into my basket at Amazon.
Sunscreen is a challenge for me, I still get quite shiny in the t-zone in the summer and I need a sunscreen that works with a bit of foundation on the top of it. I've been using LRP Dry. Touch SPF50 but it does have a white cast.
Hopefully the Frezyderm won't make me an oily mess and will work ok with a little base over it for the days I need to look a bit more polished.

SophieLion · 18/05/2018 18:46

Sallie, I think most (all?) SPFs have the little
icon (that little pot with the open lid) on the package somewhere with its shelf life once opened.
My Frezyderm SPF50 (no tint) says 12 months.

SophieLion · 18/05/2018 18:48

I'm not sure of the shelf life of an unopened SPF though....

botemp · 18/05/2018 18:52

Shock Olli, see now I'm more perturbed by the cutlery being for three people, but there only being two sets of glasses... It makes no sense...

I'm no expert Sophie but I think even if I was that product would make no sense to me then either...

You know what was a tomato revelation for me, grating them and then spooned onto charred bread that has a knob of garlic rubbed over it when it comes off the grill.
Sprinkle of salt and pepper on top of tomatoes, sometimes fresh oregano too. Supposedly even better topped with Serano ham as it's a Spanish thing, but since I don't eat meat I can't vouch for that.

Prepare to be amazed by the Frezyderm, Bless Wink

botemp · 18/05/2018 18:57

Most SPFs have an expiration date somewhere Sallie, I know my Frezyderm had it on the box it came with and on the Bioderma Cicabio it was stamped into the tube closure at the top, probably somewhere on the box too. You usually have about 2 years from purchase but once opened use it within a year, though if you're taking a bottle on a beach holiday and it's constantly in your bag and exposed to high temperatures I wouldn't hold onto it for a next holiday.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 18/05/2018 18:58

Poor botemp

It's actually a cutlery set for 4, but they sold the glasses in packs of 2 and I couldn't justify buying more given the bedding I bought as well - I didn't realise Asda did 100% cotton super king size bedding!

botemp · 18/05/2018 19:08

Ah I see now... but.... but... what happened to the missing spoons Sad

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 18/05/2018 19:14

Thank you Bo and Sophie I'm a terror for chucking out boxes and bumf without reading what's one them Blush and the writing on the products themselves is so small. Sounds like all my spfs will be fine, I've not had any (opened or unopened) for more than a year and apart from the bioderma spray (that I get through fairly quickly) I don't carry them round with me - and no beach holidays either. I'll check on the bottles/tubes as well if I can read the writing

SophieLion · 18/05/2018 19:20

Aha Sallie just checked an unopened Frezyderm * box and it does indeed have an expiration date stamped on it (like the ones on medicines). Mine (bought within last couple of weeks) expires July 2020 - so seems Bo* was spot on with 2 years.

SophieLion · 18/05/2018 19:27

Oh for some reason I thought we were already in July Confused Clearly all this SPF and summer talk has got me too excited Grin
