Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Frezyderm is to be delivered tomorrow. Grin
I do hope that I didn't order the tinted one by mistake.

EnidButton · 18/05/2018 23:49

Bless Lancôme do generous samples if you ask. I also use 008 teint idole.

So I've been wanting to lose 5lbs. Not urgent, needed, or really making any effort especially at the moment but vaguely cutting back a bit, eating healthier etc. Thought I'd lost it as I weigh 8 stone 11 in the mornings but it seems by night I weigh 9stone 4. 🤔 wtf body? I haven't eaten much today. Drank loads of water and cherry juice though. Bloomin water retention, must be!

EnidButton · 18/05/2018 23:55

Oh and I bought more stuff today. I had a 20% voucher for m&s. Elasticizer as I really like it and I'm almost out. Percy and reed no oil oil for thick hair, because I liked the smell and a nails inc polish in Soho Crescent, a bright summery red. Came very close to spending £25 on Skyn lip gel masks but then got a hold of myself. and bought a gf cheesecake instead

mintmagnummm · 19/05/2018 06:37

Bless you are in for a real treat! Frezyderm is like no other! I used to use that lrp dry touch one too and then more recently an avene one. Frezyderm is so unique I still can't get my head around it and am gutted I didn't know about it sooner, just wait and see....

mintmagnummm · 19/05/2018 06:39

I have a banging headache today and feel like I've been run over by a double decker bus then reversed over by it too!

ThenCameTheFools · 19/05/2018 07:01

Hello again, am loving catching up on past threads, (was on the first 2-3 under a different name- and a million years ago, seemingly, on a similar thread with the lovely Botemp who I have regarded as my skincare guru ever since Grin)

Can I give you my routine and ask if there's anything missing? I am one of those people who buys stuff, am enthusiastic for a week, and then get too tired to bother and it languishes in the cupboard. Joining the thread properly is my self-ass-kick to not do that anymore!

So,

AM
Always in a rush but have at least started wiping over my face with a normal (non acid) toner (Liz Earle or a L'Occitane one)

Vichy long name Vitamin C drops. Love these so much. Especially following the hideous TO vitamin C crunchy foul stuff.

Eyes- hylamide subQ, no idea if it works or not. Bought it with my Boots points Grin been using it for a week.

Serum- I alternate between Nip/Fab Dragon's Blood (really like this for plumping) Nip/Fab No Needle (also really like) or one of the following: Boots Lift and Luminate/Protect and Perfect Advanced - really like both, but they are both v drying and make everything else "pill" after a couple of days/a rooibos one my Bulgarian friend raves about, cheap as chips, smells lovely, not sure what if anything it does/the Superdrug Pure one everyone raved about.

Biore Watery Essence (am in Italy, am a mozzarella skintone wise)

Mizon Snaily thingy- recent purchase, bloody love it. If I don't think about snails. It seems to act like a plumper-primer somehow.

Some days I also use moisturiser on top of the snail stuff, maybe on alternate days. Generally NY Frankincense nourishing or Nivea Q10.

Make up.

PM

Double cleanse- rotate on a weekly basis between Liz Earle/the Superdrug Vit E/BS Chamomile Butter/Botanics Cleansing Balm. Favourite is currently the last one, especially as I find it more moisturising.

Second cleanse is usually a L'Occitane foamy one (or there isn't a second cleanse Blush)

Tone- Staple for years has been the Olay Anti Wrinkle with Niacinamide as second ingredient. Also usually have some Nip/Fab glycolic pads lying around but just finished them. Have purchased for the first time this week with a £10 off Cult Beauty thing (check it out it's still on!) Pixi Glow so am using that at the mo'.

(also have NipFab Dragon's Blood pads, but am confused as they are called "cleansing pads" so I tend to use them as a "normal" toner rather than an acid one- is that right???)

Serum- one of the above again

Borabit Time thingy ampoule (purple bottle)

NY Frankincense again (or Astral if am v dry)

A mix of BS Oils of Life oil and organic Argan

Once or twice a week I use the J&J retinol from Thailand that everyone bought Grin I did have the TO retinol but got rid of it. All TO products (which of course I bought like a sheeple did absolutely nothing for me and I think they are a bit Emperor's New Clothes)

My questions would be:

Am I doing things in the right order (particularly the sunscreen in the morning- we're heading for 30 degrees here and I am, as said, a mozzarella!)

Would you add anything else? Any tweaking?

I've also started to try and incorporate a daily facial massage (following Lisa Eldridge and an American acupressure practitioner, and while it might be very much a placebo effect, it is very relaxing and I'm sure my face is plumper (to go with the rest of me )

Thank you for taking the time to read!

ThenCameTheFools · 19/05/2018 07:01

Oh, have an Amazon derma roller as well. Somewhere.

mintmagnummm · 19/05/2018 08:21

Oh dear thencamethefools I have a feeling you're going to get a telling off about your routine, I can almost hear bo huffing and puffing from here 😜

ChesterBelloc · 19/05/2018 08:48

Thank you Sophie, Bo & Mapless - I think I'm too pale for the tinted version, and also would like the more moisturising option, as sunscreen is likely to be the only product I actually put on my face every day evicts self from thread

ThenCameTheFools · 19/05/2018 09:39

Oh no! Grin

botemp · 19/05/2018 09:49

Chester, nah that just makes you aspirational on this thread. Just sunscreen and cleansing it off at the end of the day is a great routine if that's all your skin needs.

Fools, ah yes I remember you, think your previous username was fragrance related in times gone past? You were the one with the Olay BHA toner love (that disappeared for a bit) and I think your DD also used it for her KP?

Well, you are using a lot and a lot of products I generally steer people away from but if it's not actively harming your skin I'm not going to actively dissuade someone from using it despite always advocating a most simple routine possible with positively dull no frills products.

Are you using the mizon on top of SPF? SPF should be the last step of your skincare routine.

Speaking of SPF, if I were milky mozzarella toned in Italy I'd be thinking of switching to an SPF with a known high UVA PPD rating. And definitely investing in a UPF hat.

I wouldn't bother with the derma roller, no real efficacy in the home environment for anti-ageing purposes. No clue what the Retinol from Thailand is, if it's a prescription retinoid best not mention it to me as I'll get all shouty caps about it.

Ollivander84 · 19/05/2018 09:52

I'm testing a mascara from boots. No idea what it is as I'm on the tester panel. Anyway you can layer and layer and no clumps, doesn't flake or smudge and easy to remove
Suspect it's the no7 brand

Jozxyqk · 19/05/2018 10:46

Ollivander - I remember you said something about using a teeth whitening gel - which one is it please? As I'd like to do this but everything I've seen is for stain removal, my teeth aren't stained as such, they are just naturally not very white. I think they would look less "yellow" (as my DD described them - charming!) if I wasn't so pale but I'm not getting a tan just to improve the appearance of my teeth...!

Oh and I am looking at a different vitamin C product, to replace the TO vit C stuff that's cheap but grainy but stings slightly. I've been looking at the Melano CC as a potential candidate - I seem to remember you using this one, any feedback on this? I have combination, slightly dehydrated skin, do you think it would be a good fit for me? Or does anyone have any suggestions of other products around the same price?

BlessYawnBless · 19/05/2018 11:09

My Frezyderm is out for delivery.

I'm not going foundation shopping today as my skin is acting up. I notice that when I eat a lot of sugar - something I'my trying to cut down on - the next day my face has a kind of flush to it. So no point me trying new foundations as my skin looks a bit darker than it actually is.
Enid thanks for the heads up about Lancome, I'll definitely ask them for a sample.

I'll be posting my planned new skincare routine in the next day or so. It will be just a few products, quite basic actually.

ThenCameTheFools · 19/05/2018 12:58

Thank you Botemp! Yes, that's me!Olay toner, still have 3 bottles as I stockpiled it! I was VintagePerfumista.

Thank you for the order advice- this was one of my queries, when does the sunscreen go on. I have some frezyderm on order!

BlessYawnBless · 19/05/2018 14:44

Frezyderm is here. It reminds me of Smashbox Primer.
I'm afraid that it won't work. I'm a neurotic fair skinned person who is very, very cautious in the sun.
Can someone assure me that it definitely works?

Tsmummy08 · 19/05/2018 14:49

Hmm I'm still not loving my Frezyderm - I've woken up with lots of little red spots/whiteheads... not a good look. It's definitely not hormonal/cystic acne, and I can only think it's a reaction to the silicone content, which I thought may be problematic. Anyone else had this? I've had issues with 'cones in the past....

I'm wondering if it would help if I washed my face as soon as I come into the house - but at this time of year when it's nice and sunny, I may sit in the garden in the evening and therefore would technically need SPF then too... ugh, looks my quest for the perfect SPF continues....

BagelGoesWalking · 19/05/2018 15:00

Finding this Avène sunscreen very nice. It looks quite dark in the tube but is fine on the face. Feels very smooth and comfortable. No irritating feeling I often get from other sunscreens. No greasy feeling either.

EnidButton · 19/05/2018 15:51

Olli which blusher do you use the most?

I need a blusher that stays on my face. At the moment I am layering up a Bobbi brown cream blusher with a BB powder blusher and BB shimmer brick on top. I put it on and think it's too much but after an hour I swear it all vanishes.

Can anyone recommend an excellent long lasting blusher for very very pale cool toned white skin. I like bright pink ones generally but it's a fine line between pasty and doll like.

BlessYawnBless · 19/05/2018 15:58

Enid depending on your budget, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Ethereal Glow is lovely. It lasts well on me and the actual product itself seems to last a long time too, I don't need much of it.

Ollivander84 · 19/05/2018 16:05

Enid I use
Hourglass ethereal glow
New cid IGLOW in ice pop
makeup geek in spellbound
And a few bare minerals ones, can't remember the colours of them all but one is Rose radiance and the other is luxury

MrsDOnofrio · 19/05/2018 18:56

Bless I’m also fair skinned and neurotic about sunscreen. I had similar doubts about Frezyderm but it does work. I love it, easily my favourite sunscreen

EnidButton · 19/05/2018 19:08

Bless and Olli Thank you! I think I'll look at the hourglass one, as I was umming and ahhing over their powders last week. A blush will be a safer online purchase shade wise. Cake

EnidButton · 19/05/2018 19:16

Bless and Olli Can I ask if you use bronzer and which one you like if you do please? I'm looking at a guerlain one and the benefit hoola lite. Aiming for very subtle, cool toned rather than orangey/warm and no shimmer or glitter. Anyone else too, just know you're both similar skin colour to me.

Ollivander84 · 19/05/2018 20:04

Nope, I don't use
However hoola light is worth a look probably
