Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Can't walk far unfortunately bo. I will try to get some fresh air though. Don't know how to manage the anxiety/grief symptoms whilst trying to control the ME/fibro. Especially as my siblings think you can push through it. Then the wedding thing is still going ahead. It's too much to deal with.

EnidButton · 16/05/2018 11:54

Ts If it's the first time using it then could be 5-7 days before it starts. Remember not to put anything moisturising in your feet, including shower oils or body wash.

EnidButton · 16/05/2018 11:55

Could be quicker btw but the first couple of times I used it it felt like ages before it got going.

Pupsiecola · 16/05/2018 12:04

Oh Enid. That sounds awful. I went to support a freind at the weekend who had organised a Millions Missing campaign to raise awarenss of ME (her daughter has been off school for 2.5 years, and should be sitting her GCSEs right now).

Posting about shoes seems heartless after reading your latest update.

Bo these are the the ones. Really annoying as HP go up to 10 as well, which is really unusual. And they're good quality and reasonably priced too. I will look into the pre paid card. Thank you.

EnidButton · 16/05/2018 12:53

pupsie It's a really good awareness thing. I want to take part in some way next year as I have improved the past few months so might be able to. Thank you for supporting it, your friend will really appreciate it, I do. Flowers

And please don't let my posts stop anyone from posting normally. I like the familiarity of it and the chat will be a good distraction. Smile

Pupsiecola · 16/05/2018 12:59

Noted Enid.

OMG @ Frezyderm! That. Is. All.

botemp · 16/05/2018 13:15

Pupsie, I don't see the shoes here but Zappos does sell them and I know they accept international credit cards (and the FAQ confirms it), so if the offer from your forwarding friend still stands that would be easiest? Zappos also, uniquely, has a 1 year long term to make returns, so even if they're not right you could get DH to return them on his trip later in the year.

Otherwise Bluefly has them in limited sizes and colours and they ship internationally. It's a final sale site though so no returns Hmm

Here's some more info on the prepaid cards if that's of interest:

Enid, it's really tough, especially since there seems to be a mind-body dissonance on top of people grieving in different ways and becoming quite insensitive about others.

Distractions are good though, even if temporary. Anything nonsensical in particular you want to chatter on about just not the upcoming royal nuptials, please Halo

Hi everyone. I still need to get used to how chatty and fast this thread moves – not a complaint, its lovely to sit down and catch up but I am struggling with the contribution aspect…

Enid – some Flowers from me too. And a big thanks for your repeated tip (I don’t know how many threads ago) about using LRP Cicaplast B5 on the top of non-active drying out spots to help the process go faster. I have had a couple of big ones which were taking absolutely forever to dry out and in a horrible way, making covering up practically impossible due to caking over dry bits. A couple of evenings in a row dabbing the tiniest bit of the Cicaplast has made a massive difference!

It has now been almost 5 weeks since the GP prescribed me some Skinoren and I think I am finally starting to see some improvements from adding AA into the morning and keeping up the Duac in the evenings. It’s slow progress but I’ll take any progress at this stage - and I might even participate in the monthly round up posts at the end of this month Smile

EnidButton · 16/05/2018 14:39

Hooray for cicaplast! Grin It was someone on here, always forget who sorry, who first suggested it to me. Bloomin miracle worker.

No royal wedding chat don't worry. It's been over stretched everywhere else on MN. My close is having a street party but don't think we'll go. Might leave some cakes with a neighbour to take on our behalf. Oops that was almost royal wedding chat..

I'm going to get out of the house for a bit. No idea where but some cool fresh air will be nice. Hope you all have a good afternoon.

TantricTwist · 16/05/2018 15:58

enid you should definitely try and show your face for a while at your Close party it will cheer you up more than you think. You'll be surprised how much your neighbours will care about whats going on in your life if you choose to share. You can always retreat back into your home if it gets too much

Pupsiecola · 16/05/2018 16:47

Wow bo. Thanks so much for going to all that trouble! I've not heard of Zappos. (I'm not much of a shopper). How come I can order through them with my UK CC but couldn't through HP themselves, I wonder.

Confusssed · 16/05/2018 17:32

Could I ask advice about my skincare please?

I double cleanse every night using a Ren cleanser + serum + moisturiser. I have been slowly building up using TO Granactive Retinoid 2% and currently apply it every other night.

Mornings I cleanse again + serum + Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily Defense SPF 50 as my moisturiser/sunscreen. I allow it to settle for 20 mins before applying my foundation which is SPF 15.

The thing is, when I go outside and it's sunny my face feels a bit sore and tight. My car had been parked in direct sunlight yesterday and the interior was hot when I got in, and my face suddenly felt really hot too.

I'm worried that the retinol isn't doing me any favours? I use about a pea size blob for my whole face, is it too much? I have always had very good skin anyway, so wondering do I need to use it? But I'm just starting to get fine lines which I want to treat as effectively as possible. Should I reduce how often I use the retinol, or will that just make it pointless?

mintmagnummm · 16/05/2018 19:47

Ok so for lunch today I had salad leaves, cherry tomatoes, red onion, beetroot and feta cheese with a raspberry vinaigrette. It was delicious!! Only trouble is I hate that aftertaste of onion! It lingers for rest of the day!

TantricTwist · 16/05/2018 20:11

mint try chives or spring onion. Raw onion hurts my stomach. I ate a sandwich with chicken, tomato, mustard and rocket for lunch which was delicious and I didnt binge later on in frenzied mad hunger.

TantricTwist · 16/05/2018 20:17

If I skip carbs I get 'hangry' and a bit dizzy

mintmagnummm · 16/05/2018 20:49

Good idea tant. I HATE rocket 😝

mint Grin you're so funny. I love it's pepperiness Yummy.

Right so I've cleansed, acid toned and just about to apply my concoction of LRP toleraine, sea kelp coral and Vit C powder, I feel like a chemist.

Ollivander84 · 16/05/2018 21:33

Makeup off here and teeth whitening gel in! Got a photo shoot next Tuesday so need to look half decent

SallieSallow · 16/05/2018 21:36

I can't live without carbs either I'm just trying to stick to healthier ones at the moment, I have an atrocious white toast and butter habit Blush

Confusssed that TO 2% retinoid is one of the allegedly less potent ones but some of us find the 'weaker' retinoids do cause irritation, it's something to do with the way they convert/break down the retinol. Hopefully someone else will be along shortly to clarify my very badly worded explanation Grin

Quite a few of us also came to the conclusion that TO products in general are not the greatest, and you might be better off looking at other brands. I'm not using an OTC retinoid currently but if you have a read back on some of the previous threads there's quite a few recommended/reviewed.

Mapless you have indeed found your people Grin I'm using the non tinted frezyderm but will be trying the tinted one next.

Pupsiecola · 16/05/2018 22:09

Having my Vit C (until I can get my pesky mitts on DE again) and Retinol in cream/moisturiser form (LRP) is throwing me a little. When do I use my HA and my oil?! I feel like I need to put the LRP straight onto the skin, and that I shouldn't put anything else on after either?!

Welcome Mapless. I used the Frezyderm (non tinted) for the first time today. It's odd. I worry I've not put any on as it just disappears! Be interested in the tinted version.

I met a friend for lunch and told her about it. She said she uses a Rodial primer with SPF. I came home and Googled it and primer + SPF seems to be a thing. Anyone use one?

TantricTwist · 17/05/2018 00:55

pupsie It does seem to be a thing. I guess maybe thats why I like Frezyderm so much because it has the slip of the type of primers I like plus my make up stays on over it.

mintmagnummm · 17/05/2018 06:35

Tant funny ha ha or just funny peculiar? 🤪

Tsmummy08 · 17/05/2018 07:25

Pupsie I'd put the Redermic on first, then an oil later. Not sure about the vit C/HA conundrum as I'd normally do vit C then HA, hmmm...

I've used several primers with SPF - LM, Emma Hardie (bit stingy, not sure why)... I've looked at the Nars and Giorgio Armani ones too, though haven't purchased. I think they're a good idea but wasn't sure about how protective they really are.

Pupsiecola · 17/05/2018 07:45

Thanks mummy. Yes that's what I've been doing re the retinol. Once I get my beloved DE it will be back to normal. Soon I will be after a retinol serum and will be asking what you all use. Maybe I'll look at your routines at the end of the month...
