Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Sshh don’t tell the hoarders thread but ... after looking at the anti aging info link on the first page I have bought myself a vitamin C serum and a retinoid. Specifically The Ordinary Vit C suspension with HA & Granactive Retinoid.

I have been doing reading up on how best to apply them and when. Does anyone else have experience of these products ? Thanks :-)

mintmagnummm · 05/06/2018 14:10

My azelaic acid has arrived....

miffy2 · 05/06/2018 15:09

Chocolate! My second favourite topic after beauty/skincare...

If combined with mint it HAS to be dark chocolate (whoever dared to combine milk choc with mint...bleeurgh) and I also like orange and choc combo. Otherwise plain, thank you very much.

Pistachio ice-cream is delicious, and beaten only by a good coffee flavour ice-cream or my all-time favourite, brown bread ice-cream. Don't knock it till you've tried it!

On a skincare note, I received a 7-day trial of Sunday Riley Good Genes. It's from Sephora and I am going to try it out over the next week or so. The 7 sachets will probably last me about 10-12 days I reckon. No intention of buying it (£££) but certainly happy to give it a shot and switch up my routine for a bit. (watch me fall in love with it and wail at the cost LOL)

SophieLion · 05/06/2018 15:43

Hhhmmm Princess... I don't think I've seen rose flavoured ice cream here. Maybe on some of the more traditional islands. Sounds more Turkish than Greek. So perhaps Northern Cyprus?

Yes Miffy definitely agree: dark chocolate and mint. I have never heard of brown bread ice cream! Can't imagine what that would taste like..... where do you buy/find that?

I do remember going to a fantastic ice cream place in Cornwall once. All these amazing flavours. Think it was down Penzance way.

mintmagnummm · 05/06/2018 17:29

Just used my azelaic acid. I was surprised that it was a white lotion type consistency rather than a water/gel as it's called a serum but I quite like that tbh. It said 1-2 pumps so I did 1 to be on safe side, it spread nicely and absorbed well, no stinging at all but there was a very slight tingling sensation where my rash is but as I said it was only very slight and definitely bearable. Only time will tell now....

miffy2 · 05/06/2018 17:45

Sophie bb ice cream is quite localised. I am in Ireland and even then only find it by certain 'artisan' brands or certain restaurants. It is divine. It is vanilla based and the brown bread seems to be crumbled up and roasted/caramelised before being added to it.

If you are ever near it, grab some and see if you like it :) :)

Or be extremely domestic-goddess-like and make your own. (puts on summer To Do list):

Ollivander84 · 05/06/2018 17:51

I love brown bread ice cream! There's a place near me that does loads of flavours but their clotted cream ice cream is AMAZING

princessbear80 · 05/06/2018 17:59

As much as I hate to change the subject away from ice cream, I have ordered the garden of wisdom retinol and will report back once I’ve tried it!

botemp · 05/06/2018 19:08

Mmmm retinol ice cream Grin

Sorry, trigger2, the general consensus on these threads do not come out in favour of the Ordinary. The Vit C 23% is ok but horrible to use and the retinoids are a bit questionable, especially WRT consistency in formulation and longevity of the products.

Miffy, just a warning, I tried Good Genes a very long time ago and it was highly irritating. Never again.

I absolutely love the Elizabeth Shaw chocolates with crispy minty bits in and mint matchsticks.

I am currently eating a Haagen Daz salted caramel Ice cream bar and it is truly delicious (it's my second one) Grin

JDSTER · 05/06/2018 19:24

Bendicks mint crisp all the way for me. Also quite like pound shop knock off after eights called mint nights BlushGrin
Tant those Hagen Dazz salted caramel bars are delicious but I could not eat two 🤢.

I had sea buckthorn ice cream last summer- delicious it was.

Anyway, back to S&B mint I did have TO azelaic and it was a white lotion consistency too. trigger I’ve used TO Vit C. It’s very grainy with an oily type texture. It can sting when you first use it. Use about a five pence piece blob and spread across clean, bare face. Wait a few minutes if you can then apply moisturiser. I always wait 10 mins or so before applying separate SPF or you could apply SPF straight top of Vit C if not using moisturiser (which some of us aren’t at this time of year).

EnidButton · 05/06/2018 19:34

Tesco Finest chocolate ice cream is one of the best I've ever tried. For any choc ice cream lovers. Chocolate ice cream has to be really rich and dark for me.

We have a few ice cream places near us as it's a tourist hot spot in Summer. Spotted a liquorice one last week that I must try at some point. Usually just get chocolate in a double scoop tub. Although last time I got some at a new place the server warned me it was probably too strong for 2 scoops so gave me a little spoon to try first. I ordered 3.

Totally unrelated...I have toothache. 😩

trigger2 · 05/06/2018 19:35

Thanks for the advice. I haven’t tried any retinoids or vit c products before so taking babysteps. Here in Spain you can buy tretinoin retinol over the counter.

Not to mention the kinder bueno ice cream here .... Mediterranean diet indeed 😂

botemp · 05/06/2018 19:47

trigger, I do hope you are a regular SPF user as neither Vit C or retinol should be used without that in place.

I the smug virtuous bastard had Oppo ice cream tonight in Colombian chocolate with hazelnuts. It was on offer, have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I like a rich chocolate too Enid, the best one I ever had was by Freddo in Buenos Aires. I do have a recipe by Dorie Greenspan for chocolate ganache ice cream somewhere which is intensely rich and delicious. It's basically a lot of chocolate and cream.

There's an Italian ice cream they started selling here, I think it's called Liuk which is a lemon popsicle with a liquorice bar as the stick, it's quite unusual but craving inducing. I also love a lemon granita when it's super hot.

I love after eights and their various pound shop knock offs, it's just mint ice cream I don't like. I usually go for chocolate or vanilla ice cream with nuts or caramel and prefer the basic ranges like carte d'or to the fancy brands. But my favourite of all is a big Mr Whippy from the van with a flake and raspberry sauce 🍦 🍦🍦 😍

trigger I've used that TO Vit c, it was ok-ish at first (wasn't keen on the consistency) but after a while it made me itchy. One of the reasons I stopped using TO stuff is that I don't think their products have much of a shelf life, I've had a few things that have started off ok and then I've reacted to them a few weeks in.

The garden of wisdom range that Pupsie mentions sounds like it might be better than TO, and it's not much more expensive.

www.victoriahealth.com/brand/Garden-of-Wisdom/1110

We'll let her be the Guinea pig though Grin as I don't think anyone else here has tried it

SallieSallow · 05/06/2018 19:52

When you said Freddo there Bo I thought of the little Freddo chocolate bars we have here that are shaped like a frog 🐸 & was a bit surprised they'd made it to Buenos Aires Grin

trigger2 · 05/06/2018 19:58

Yes I wear spf50 here everyday botemp, I found a lovely watery one from Isdin here but can also find it on Amazon.
I’m aware of the shelf life issue with TO, to be honest it’s first steps and I’ll know fairly quickly what my skin thinks ! I’m fairly sensible and test products and certainly wouldn’t dive into using them regularly until I feel comfortable. But my logic is that they are reasonable enough to dip my toe into the water. I’ve always had a fairly consistent regime of cleanse moisturiser and spf so my skin is not too bad. I’ve had perioral dermatitis in the past so I tend to err on the side of caution these days. My skin seems to prefer less but though I’d try them out and see !

JDSTER · 05/06/2018 20:10

Enid Alert, Alert-Tesco have recently change their finest chocolate ice cream. It is no longer beautiful and smooth, as it was, they’ve added choc sauce and bits of chocolate. What a travesty of ice cream Angry

TantricTwist · 05/06/2018 20:37

JDSTER yes I know what you mean re 2 ice creams but I had a banging headache so needed the sugar rush.

Probably would have been better to drink more water but Mmmm they were so good.

I think I need to stock up my freezer with more ice cream bar delights, I've been a stingy on myself regarding treats recently.

I finally cracked open my NIOD Mastic Must face mask and its really rather lovely. My skin feels really really good after using it, super clean like everything has been sucked out, without feeling dry.

Not sure what to apply after it, I quite fancy trying something new from my M&S beauty box like the Origins ginseng or M&S ultimate sleep cream but maybe I'll stick to my retinol and perhaps it will work better somehow?

TantricTwist · 05/06/2018 20:40

Ps re Niod Mastic Must mask, it smells like urm musty like mushrooms or wheat?? It quite creamy to put on, it applies quite thinly and dries quite clear like tinted PVC glue

TantricTwist · 05/06/2018 20:53

You're meant to use it as a morning cleanser and it's meant so decrease pore size, my pores are fine I think, so I'll see if my skin changes at all while I use it up.

SallieSallow · 05/06/2018 21:07

Tant your post has just reminded me that I'm pissed off with Deciem (again). I've got a mahoosive tube of NIOD Sanskrit sarponins cleanser that I've been using every day for months and it's not even a quarter gone. Checked the expiry date the other day - use within 6 months of opening. I paid £8 for it in a Black Friday deal but it's over £30 usually, what a waste as unless you have a family who all use it or are literally bathing in the stuff there's no way you could use it up in 6 months.

I really want a Mr Whippy now, will be out chasing the ice cream van after work tomorrow Grin

JDSTER · 05/06/2018 21:09

Tant I finished off a tube of mastic mud a month or two ago. I liked the bubbly way it came out of the tube. I know what you mean about the yeasty smell but not a bad smell. It was ok, quite nice in fact, but didn’t do anything special so wouldn’t repurchase

JDSTER · 05/06/2018 21:11

salie do you like Sanskrit sarponins? I’ve used that too- smelt like coffee grounds to me. I’ve actually got an unopened tube languishing in a drawer. I should probably get on and use it.

miffy2 · 05/06/2018 21:43

Bo I am watching a Nadine Baggott video and she mentions the GOW vitamin C serum as being a good dupe for the SkinCeuticals version. Looking forward to hearing how you feel about it as I would love a good replacement for my beloved DE!
