Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Bo sorry you have lost me lol can you explain as if I was as thick as shit? (Which clearly I am!)

SophieLion · 03/06/2018 08:42

I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the wedding Enid Smile

Hello Violet Smile

I've established that BHA doesn't work with tretinoin but does AHA go with it? If so, anyone know why? Also why does azelaic acid work well with tret? I'm not using either of these at the moment but curious. Thank you.

botemp · 03/06/2018 08:45

Sorry it wasn't very coherent.

Option 1: take out the Vichy Mineral 89 out of the routine.

Option 2: use half the amount of VM89 and Eucerin at the normal amount.

Option 3: use the normal amount of VM89 and half of the Eucerin.

Option 4: half the amount of VM89 and half the amount of Eucerin moisturiser, mixing the two together if preferred.

Sophie what are you meaning by "go with" tret? Do you mean using an underneath/same time or every other night? I use either a glycolic or lactic acid a couple of times a week (with tret every other night). I use BHA directly on the occasional blemish with no issues.

SophieLion · 03/06/2018 09:04

Tsmummy, by "go with" I meant doesn't cause irritation (the BHA salicylic acid burnt my cheeks a bit when I used it a couple of weeks ago - I used it only once and not at the same time as the tret).

I don't mean using them both at exactly the same time. Just maybe once a week not on the same nights as tret. Currently using tret twice a week.

botemp · 03/06/2018 09:05

The only reason I could see the pairing (in a broad routine, probably not in a single routine) is that AA is anti-inflammatory and tret tends to inflame the skin. AA is pretty gentle and has a higher pH so less chance of the usual irritation you find with other acids, but usually if you're on Tret that's all you use.

Glad you had a good time Enid.

SallieSallow · 03/06/2018 10:32

I'm glad you had a great time in your killer heels Enid 👠 💃🏻

I've just ordered Hourglass veil and blusher and a load of bras Blush so please have wet kippers at the ready if you see me mentioning any more unnecessary spending. The eyeko mascara set is allowed though as once my voucher comes it will be pretty cheap, and a lot of the bras will be returned as I've got a selection of styles and sizes coming.

Those shoes are lovely Olli I have such odd shaped feet that I can't see them staying on me, I walk out of pretty much everything that isn't either boots, lace ups or has loads of straps to anchor them on.

SophieLion · 03/06/2018 10:37

Good luck with the bras Sallie. I'm also currently waiting for two deliveries.

Thanks Bo. I'm not using any acids at the moment and not planning until skin settles down. It was a lot better but chin spots have flared up again. Sam Bunting often mentions azelaic acid in her videos and I think she pairs it with tret but I'm not entirely sure. *

mintmagnummm · 03/06/2018 11:03

Thank you bo that definitely makes sense to me, goodness I'm hard work! Is there one of those options that you feel would work best? Which option would you choose if it were you? (Now u know why my last name on here was indecisive lol)

botemp · 03/06/2018 11:11

For those of you on the bra hunt, if you come across a good strapless bra that's small back-big cup size but not a full cup, please let me know as my current ones tend to slowly make their way down and they're not available in a smaller back/bigger cup.

mint, I'd go through the various options, start with one for a few days and see if that helps and just tweak it to see what works best.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 03/06/2018 11:20

botemp - have you tried the curvy Kate luxe or the wonderbra one with the hands in?

SallieSallow · 03/06/2018 11:24

Bo I wasn't specifically looking for strapless but I did save some on my wish list as I might get one when I've figured out what size I am.

This one starts at 28 back and does big cup sizes.

www.brastop.com/curvy-kate-luxe-strapless-bra-black?nosto=product-page-1

Think it might be a bit too full in the cup though, the less full cup ones that I'd listed start at a 30 back which I'm presuming would be too big for you?

SallieSallow · 03/06/2018 11:25

Cross post Olli Grin

botemp · 03/06/2018 11:26

Olli, the wonderbra was terrible, it just spread my boobs out to the side, how one gets a cleavage in that is a bit beyond me. I did try a few sizes but it was all an equally horrific sight... Curvy Kate is full cupped usually, isn't it? Or is that the cups are wide, which means theyl wires dig into my armpits, can't remember why I have always discounted that brand. I'll have a look though, thanks.

I'm wondering if one of those clips that make the band smaller would work on the ones I have currently as the cup size is exactly right.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 03/06/2018 11:32

The rixie clip? I have one and they're pretty good

botemp · 03/06/2018 12:00

Sallie, I usually wear a 30 as 28 is just uncomfortable and unnecessary ime. Shyeah, that curvy Kate one is exactly what I don't need for the reasons you mentioned. It's a bit annoying as most strapless bras are that shape, wide and voluminous on top but for a strapless I do really need a small back, in larger sister sizes it all goes a bit monoboob which isn't all that flattering either.

Yes, Olli, something like that rixie clip. Good to know they're actually worthwhile getting. I once got one of those clips to turn your normal bra into a racerback which was the biggest waste of money ever. Does it actually stay in place and is it noticeably there?

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 03/06/2018 12:04

It does stay in place well, I can feel it a little bit but it's not uncomfortable

Ollivander84 · 03/06/2018 12:07

This is quite interesting about strapless, I was googling then to see if my favourite bra company (ewa michalak) do a strapless
http://dreamsandunderthings.com/2015/12/05/bra-review-ewa-michalak-mleczny-strapless-65g/

SallieSallow · 03/06/2018 14:23

Bo these are a couple I listed that seem to be less full in the cup

www.brastop.com/lepel-lexi-strapless-bra-black

www.brastop.com/pour-moi-st-tropez-starpless-bra-black?nosto=product-page-1

It's hard for me to judge though as the models are a completely different size and shape to me. Which is why I've ended up ordering a shed load of bras Confused

SophieLion · 03/06/2018 14:53

Bo, I am also a 30 back. Bravissimo has a lot of 30 backs (and bigger cup sizes - lucky you - I wouldn't mind bigger cups GrinWink) but I didn't try any strapless. They had a very helpful live chat service so you could always ask if they have exactly what you need.

Tsmummy08 · 03/06/2018 20:49

Mumsnet swears by! Grin

botemp · 03/06/2018 21:11

Thanks, Olli, that post confirms my issues with strapless bras. I'm thinking maybe I'm better off trying some push up strapless bras in the 'wrong' size. I can usually go down an extra cup size in a push up as I don't have the volume on top and my thinking is smaller cup size = less wide cup and a push up should give me some plunge action.

I'd looked at that Lepel one Sallie but it didn't look that great in approximately my size on bratabase and another review showed the tops flipped down after one wear. If you haven't discovered bratabase yet it's like a giant database as the name suggests where ordinary people and bra bloggers post pictures, reviews, and detailed measurements of bras in their size. So good if models are very far away from your size/shape.

Sophie, I just measure seemingly large at 30F but I'd say my boobs are average to small, but proportional to my body, slightly generous for my clothing size. I have a projected ribcage though and I've been told by fitters that makes me extra challenging to fit. I get on best with French brands but very few have a 30 back so the choice is limited.

Swears By Shock has my campaign finally come to fruition?

Linky please Tsn, I can't see it on top of the board and I opted out of all MN emails because they're really annoying.
