Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Well I suppose you could garden a nice topiary down there Enid...

Ehm, in reply to mint's question. I don't use anything, it's equipped to self cleanse and the area has a very specific pH that shouldn't be disrupted by soaps as that's usually what leads to thrush and similar issues. Leave it alone and use a pH neutral cleanser (like a cleansing oil) in the general area. If there's anything I abhor more than the usual beauty PR that preys on insecurities, it's the spiel that vaginas are dirty and need special cleansers. If you've got issues see a GP, otherwise water is all you need.

Enid Grin GrinGrin

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling Mint much as we love you and want you here, do you think this thread/style and beauty in general might be triggering it?

To answer your question though I only use water as I've always been told using soap or shower gel can cause thrush - and given I have a lot of issues with various products making my body itchy I've thought it best to steer clear. I do use soap on the surrounding bits/groin area.

Bo thank you for the eyeko mascara info, there's a little set on QVC with 3 different travel size ones so I might get that. As I won't be using it daily a larger tube would probably dry out before I'd finished it.

I'm eyeing up the LRP hydrating cleanser as I'm close to needing a new night time second cleanser, is that the one that some people thought left a bit of a film on the skin? JDSTER I know you've mentioned it but I'm sure a couple of others said the same.

SallieSallow · 02/06/2018 19:19

Cross post Bo glad I'm not the only one that only uses water, I thought everyone might throw their hands up in horror that I don't give mine a good lathering Grin

botemp · 02/06/2018 19:37

I'm not all that knowledgeable about dysphorias but was wondering similarly as Sallie. I hope it's not out of line to question it, but I suppose for the rest of us it would be good to know if we're actively, but unknowingly, contributing to it.

I usually get the travel sets, Sallie, they're quite good value for money and last very long. Their formulas don't dry out IME. I think QVC were doing a £10 discount code if you opted in to their GDPR policy, think you had to agree to it before the 3rd and you'd get the voucher on the 5th.

sallie it’s LRP toleriane dermo cleanse that can leave a film (I certainly found that, having oily skin). The toleriane hydrating cleanser is a different beast and definitely no film to speak of.

Just to clarify re the soap thing, clearly the vagina itself self cleans, soap is used in the general area only. Not sure why I feel the need to clarify that, but I do Grin.

Violet18 · 02/06/2018 19:45

Hi everyone
I'm a long time lurker and have been following this amazing thread for a while. I've got a great routine started but I'm wondering about adding in the facetheory moisturiser M10 which contains vitamin c, as a last step in the pm following retinol or BHA. The LRP in the routine below doesn't seem heavy enough and my skin can sometimes feel a bit parched by the morning. I'm aware they aren't meant to be included in the same routine but the vitamin c is quite far down the ingredients list and I leave at an hour between the actives and moisturiser. Any opinions on this please?

I'm 38, my skin is oily, mostly clear with occasional hormone spots on the chin but very sensitive, particularly around the eyes. I have fine lines developing around my eyes, bags and dark circles (nice!), I also have large pores. I avoid fragrance.

I'm new to actives (2 months in) so have started really slowly and have chosen the facetheory C20 for the am as it's a derivative as I suspect my reactive skin won't handle a more potent vitamin c serum. However, the vitamin c in the M10 is the proper stuff, but I'm thinking that since it's far down in the list that it won't be too strong.

Here's my routine:

AM
LRP Toleriane Dermo cleanser
Facetheory C20 serum
Avene antiaging SPF50 or Frezyderm

PM
Double cleanse with LRP Dermo cleanser (oil first cleanse didn't work for me - spots)
Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant serum (0.03% Retinol)
OR Paula's Choice 2% BHA
LRP Redermic-R eyes (only on BHA nights, in retinol nights, I sweep under my eyes with the retinol)
LRP Toleriane moisturiser

Overall, my oiliness has really improved with the above so I don't want to go backwards by adding in a moisturiser that's too heavy. I would consider an oil too, but not olive
derived. Any advice apreciated! Thanks

TantricTwist · 02/06/2018 19:50

enid Grin at cross-post

mint yes I use soap on the outside of my Vag and just water on the inside.

I am just using my LRP toleraine dermo cleanser up as a first cleanse to remove make-up (badly), I really dislike this product and won't repurchase, also really disliked Avene extreemly gentle cleanser which I tried out a few years ago.

mintmagnummm · 02/06/2018 19:58

Ladies thank you, in answer to your question no this thread definitely does not trigger it or make it worse, I find it can actually help sometimes. I'm not really sure what triggers it, potentially hormones as it does seem to flare up more around that time but it also flares at other times and no idea why.

The reason I asked about the vag cleansing lol is because I've used aqueous cream to wash down there for years but I'm not sure if I like it anymore, may try using just water.

Tant just wanted to say the avene extremely gentle cleanser is not the same as it used to be, I couldn't get on with the old formula but the one now is much better.

botemp · 02/06/2018 20:20

Hello and welcome, Violet Smile

Considering your skin, if you're up to ordering from foreign lands, I think the Rosette Ceramide Gel mentioned upthread by Bagel would actually be a really good fit for you. I wouldn't be that concerned about low % Vit C in a cream but the feedback on the formulation consistency of the Facetheory creams hasn't been that great on here IIRC and by the sound of it your skin would benefit more from a lighter formulation that's more humectant heavy than occlusive heavy.

That's good to know, mint. I know I can be a bit firm with you when it appears you're 'obsessing' and want to add in/switch up everything with no real discernible cause and that feels like the correct response but I never know for sure whether I'm helping or adding fuel to the fire by engaging at all.

Violet18 · 02/06/2018 20:38

That's great, thanks for the recommendation Bo. Also, I'm considering the Medik8 3TR for my next retinol, is it too big a leap from 0.03% to 0.3%?

I'm in the UK and haven't ordered any skin care from overseas. I'm a little nervous tbh. Can anyone recommend a reputable supplier for the Cerave Rosette? Bagel which did you purchase from please?

Violet18 · 02/06/2018 20:43

On the subject of LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser and oily skin, I use a flannel and tepid water to remove then fresh water to do a final rinse off. I don't find that it leaves a film this way. Although, I can be a bit heavy handed with the flannel Grin

botemp · 02/06/2018 21:12

Violet, realistically, 0.03% probably won't have been all that noticeable so any step up would be a leap in that sense but you're tolerating the Redermic eye well, right? So your skin doesn't seem to react disproportionately to retinol at a comparable starter % (around the eye).

The Rosette isn't by Cerave. Rosette is the brand, Ceramide Gel the product name. You can pick it up from eBay, should take a fortnight or so to arrive and the price should be low enough not to incur import duties and taxes. Japanese eBay sellers tend to be trustworthy but look for one with a high seller rating and plenty of sales under their belt.

SallieSallow · 02/06/2018 21:17

That's good to know Mint as we would miss you round these parts Smile

I've just placed a big EPP order, mainly repurchases of stuff I'm running low on but added in the LRP toleriane hydrating cleanser and a bioderma body spray moisturiser type thing for itchy skin. Have now moved on to bra shopping but it's giving me brain ache as there's so much choice, I'm looking for low cut/half cup styles that push up from the bottom but the models have much bigger boobs than I do so it's hard to gage how the bras will look/fit on someone less well endowed.

Bo Yes I've had the GDPR email & requested the discount code from QVC so I'll order the eyeko set once that comes through.

Violet the rosette gel is available on Amazon, it's not a cerave one though - or at least not the one I saw

TantricTwist · 02/06/2018 21:41

Olli I love those palmaira sandals of yours such a brilliant design, love it

Violet18 · 02/06/2018 21:54

Great, thanks for your help Bo and Sallie. I think I got a bit confused! There was a photo of Cerave cream in Bagel's post too.

Bo, yes I did wonder about the redermic-r eye cream as it's 0.6% and I'm tolerating it well. I have definitely seen an improvement since I've started using it. I'm just cautious probably a bit overly.

I'm also planning on a Niacinamide addition from Garden of Wisdom that has been mentioned up thread. I had been using Freederm spot gel for about 10years which contains nicotinamide at 4% but with high alcohol content unfortunately. Since I stopped using it my skin has been much less oily and my other actives have been controlling any spots.

mintmagnummm · 02/06/2018 22:11

Thanks bo and no you're not adding fuel to the fire, I genuinely need your recs and I do genuinely have the issues with my skin that I mention. Talking of which, is there a moisturiser I can use at night that's a bit lighter than the eucerin? I'm finding in this humidity that it feels a bit heavy and tacky on my skin which is making it feel itchy and like there's residue.

Aww thanks Sallie that's nice of you to say, although I'm sure my annoyingness (I don't think this word exists lol) wouldn't be missed!

mintmagnummm · 02/06/2018 22:12

I had a blackhead on side of my chin this eve! I never usually get these!!

EnidButton · 03/06/2018 00:14

Had a really good time and got lots of compliments on my dress. (Thank you!) Glad we went.

What a fecker of a month though. Onwards and upwards. Flowers

TantricTwist · 03/06/2018 00:33

Enid yay and did you wear the fabulous shoes (did you take a spare pair of comfies) and did you dance like noone was watching Grin

I've just finished watching 'The Shack' on Amazon Prime, I really liked it actually. Not entirely sure how to describe it but worth watching if you are in a contemplative mood, which as it happens I was.

TantricTwist · 03/06/2018 00:44

Enid to better times ahead Flowers

EnidButton · 03/06/2018 01:59

I did dance like no-one was watching! Grin Everyone did. Ate a lot too. I just took my shoes off. 💗

EnidButton · 03/06/2018 02:01

I mean, yes I wore them until the dancing. 💃🏻🕺🏻

EnidButton · 03/06/2018 02:02

I wouldn't have been able to do that a year ago actually. So that's a good sign. (Health wise)

Tsmummy08 · 03/06/2018 06:57

So glad to hear you had a great time Enid, I haven't posted here much but I've been reading and keeping you in my thoughts xxx

botemp · 03/06/2018 07:36

So good to hear you had a brilliant time, Enid. I'm sure it was all down to the shoes Grin

mint, I'd consider taking out the Mineral 89 or using less of it (and/or the Eucerin, perhaps mix them 50/50 using half amounts of both if you're still following my logic) rather than switching out for something new. Especially since you have the azelaic coming in to trial.
