Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Thanks re the mascara list Bo. Just eyerolling myself as I read your Medik 8 to actually be called 'Mo-Wed-Fri Medik8'. I thought wow, that's an interesting product name concept, telling you which days to used it Blush. The penny dropped when I read the next line. It's been one of those days lol.

Pupsiecola · 01/06/2018 16:47

I've had 2 spots on my left cheek for about a week. They've not come to a head. They're more like red, raised bumps. I fear it may be the Frezyderm?

Or, layering the Clarins oil over HA.

Any ideas? I very very rarely get spots.

SophieLion · 01/06/2018 17:18

Thanks Pupsie and privacy request noted. The spots that I am getting again are under the skin ones like you describe. Derm said I was using waaaaaay too much SPF (I also have Frezyderm). Don't know if that helps you or not.

Ollie, easy for you! Not so sure about me but will try it out tonight as got to go out. Smile

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 17:18

@botemp did you know (I'm almost positive you know this) you can get that cleansing oil from easyparapharmacie.

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 17:19

Pupsie I suspect it's the clarins tbh, I really don't get the hype around this product it contains fragrance ffs!

BagelGoesWalking · 01/06/2018 17:30

Mascara: my DD18 just got the Glossier mascara and likes it a lot. She had long eyelashes anyway but likes that it's non-clumping and you can build up a couple of layers, if wanted.

Sunscreen: Have always avoided sunscreen except on holiday because of reactions but find the Avène tinted fine. It looks dark but blends in very easily and gives a nice look. Easy to find in Boots. Haven't compared to the popular Frezyderm!

botemp · 01/06/2018 17:32

I do know mint, but the shipping is not free to the Netherlands so it's really not cost effective. The shipping is more than the product itself.

As an aside, do you mind not tagging me all the time? I know I ask people to use the @ so I get an email notification when they want me to answer something and therefore I can get to it quicker when I'm not too active on the thread but otherwise it isn't necessary.

Pupsie it may be the Frezyderm, I do find it needs to be removed properly. I can't get away with a single cleanse with it. However, I agree with mint that the Clarins is a likely suspect too, especially if you're layering it in your routine when you're not very dry. IIRC you've had other oils (a Pai one?) in your routine and it didn't work out in the long term. When are you using it, just at night under moisturiser?

Speaking of mascaras, I need to restock some and there's a 40% off promo going currently so I'll restock the Sensai and will get the Dior Pump and Volume that I've tried at counter before and liked a lot but L'ORÉAL paradise one is also available on the cheap, how are the thoughts on that one now that the hype around it has died out? Considering I like spindly separated lashes, not heavy volume.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 18:13

Oh sorry bo I was doing it subconsciously because I remembered you saying to tag you, must have stuck in my brain and I just did it on autopilot! (I actually almost did it again for this message!!) I'm drumming it in "do not tag bo" lol.

That's a bit crap about the p&p bo so bloody frustrating. Do you not get on with the ttdo balm? It actually removes very easily, I use a flannel which I've done for years with all of my cleansing products but when I rinse my hands after massaging in it comes straight off so would imagine you could rinse it off at the sink without a cloth.

SallieSallow · 01/06/2018 18:14

Eeek how can another month have passed already Shock I'll do my routine over the weekend though I don't think mine has changed much since April.

Thank you all for the eye makeup and bra info Smile I'll be doing some eyes, bra and boob research over the weekend Grin

I don't want to go to a store for the bras if I can avoid it as hate IRL shopping, so I'll probably just order a selection from Brastop as they do free returns. What site do you use Sophie?

Olli that bustle link is exactly the sort of eye look I'm after so will have a go at that following that over the weekend - including the tightlining, hope I don't poke my eyes out Shock

Pupsie I'm going to do some research into blepharoplasty so might PM you if that's ok if I start to seriously consider it, I'm concerned about time off work and not being able to drive. And £££ of course though I don't think I'd need the brow lift.

Enid I'd go for the killer heels, I can no longer wear them due to knee problems so I agree with make the most of them whilst you can Grin and glad your DH is looking after you so well Flowers

Tant I love that alpha h eye gel, I've been using it for years and always come back to it. It doesn't irritate my eyes at all, my only gripe is that I'm not sure if it has any deep treatment/long term effect but it's great for an instant lift.

Bo I prefer the spindly effect with mascara too, I'll have a look at that eyeko one as I like tubing mascaras as well, currently using a DHC tubing one that I'm happy with but I'm always up for a new mascara purchase Smile

SallieSallow · 01/06/2018 18:15

Sorry meant to say I've never tried that L'Oreal one, I don't get on with L'Oreal mascaras as they make my eyes itchy/watery.

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 18:16

The Clinique tubing mascara is lovely btw

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 18:16

I can't use L'Oréal mascaras either Sallie

botemp · 01/06/2018 18:27

It's ok, mint, no harm done Smile I don't like balms and not a fan of the liquid version. I've never gotten on with Clinique makeup, I tried that lower lashes one and it was a bit crap on me and overpriced for the amount you get.

Ooh I had that DHC mascara on a list but forgot all about it. Thanks for reminding me, Sallie. I like most of the eyeko mascaras and most are tubers, currently also have rock n kohl and black magic but I always have the Skinny as an all-rounder, it works well on bottom lashes too. They also have a new bespoke mascara service now, quite intrigued to try it, also would like to try the lash alert one but since that has growth peptides in it I'll have to wait until I'm done trialing the lash serum to make sure they don't cancel each other out or something and know what is actually making them grow (hopefully).

Sallie, I had asked for some recommendations on here because I'm a 30 back and that size is hard to find here - most start at 32. I wanted to order from the UK.
I was recommended Brastop and Bravissimo. Tried Bravissimo but all the cups were too big and although padded, didn't have any uplift (which I need after breastfeeding multiple children 😂). So now I'm waiting for an order from Figleaves and Max Cleavage (both of which have 30 band size).

I'm now going to do that facial massage to wake me up a bit before I start getting ready for going out.

Enid, definitely the fabulous but uncomfortable heels Smile

Ollivander84 · 01/06/2018 18:55

I've just bought some leopard print and neon palmaira sandals Blush

TantricTwist · 01/06/2018 19:27

enid the trick is to wear the fabulous shoes and take a spare more comfortable pair esp if you intend to dance, which you will at some point

Pupsiecola · 01/06/2018 19:28

I've been using the Clarins for about 3 weeks so I thought it was unlikely. I don't usually have an issue with fragrance. I don't generally layer the oil. I sometimes just use a bit on each cheek before bed, if I've done my skincare routine much earlier in the evening, and never if I've used Redermic R (which is every other night). Funny how it's only on one side too. I have used a PAI oil before Bo and a Neal's Yard. I didn't feel they did much (vs not getting on with them) and in fairness my routine was probably a bit more on the busy side then and I think they were the first things I dropped. So I was happy to try the Clarins oil to see if that made a difference. I think my skin can look a bit parched at times and it does help with that.

My gut feeling is it's the Frezyderm. Especially given that you've mentioned double-cleansing. I''ve not double cleansed for a good few months. Hmmm. I think I will not use the Frezderm for a few days and see. No new spots have come up mind you, just these original two.

Pupsiecola · 01/06/2018 19:31

Sallie do PM me for more info. I don't mind posting here. I'm certainly not ashamed of my decision. I just don't want to put the ideas into others' heads if they've not got there all by themselves! (I had a friend who just had the eyelids done - half the price and very little down time).

TantricTwist · 01/06/2018 19:42

Pupsie my Clarins lotus oil will give me small spots if I use it too often ie every night or so.
So I tend to only use it when I'm feeling dehydrated and then its fine as a one off every now and again, definitely no more than once a week for me.

SallieSallow · 01/06/2018 20:16

Thank you Pupsie & I will do once I've done a bit more research. You're not based in the north west U.K. by any chance are you?

Bo I like the DHC mascara but it's very subtle/un-dramatic. Is the eyeko black magic definitely a tubing one? As whilst DHC is perfect for day I wouldn't mind a slightly more noticeable one for nights out and black magic seems to have good reviews.

Pupsiecola · 01/06/2018 21:55

ThanksTantric. I will try that.

Sallie, I'm South - Hampshire.

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 22:20

Bo why is my skin oily when I wake up in morn??

SallieSallow · 01/06/2018 22:35

Thanks Pupsie that's a shame as obviously won't be able to use your surgeon, though I do go to Hampshire a lot for work doubt they'd let me fit in a quick bit of eye surgery Grin

Mint I suspect your oiliness could be because the nights are quite warm and sticky/humid at the moment. I have the body temp of a reptile 🦎 but even I'm managing without my hot water bottle and bed socks these days Shock

ChesterBelloc · 01/06/2018 22:47

Thank you bo, for taking the time to comment on my routine.

I know the Agireline won't be doing much if anything for my forehead lines, but they're so bad I feel like I should be trying something - and I'm too scared for Botox.

Any recommendations (anyone) for "a night cream that focuses on barrier health (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids in the 2:1:1 ratio) to help actively improve the cause of dehydration..."?

Pupsiecola · 01/06/2018 23:56

You may recall I was asking about hair products to replace my Pureology spray (the name escapes me).

After doing some research I bought some Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Primer. It's nto cheap, and it's early days, but it has left my hair feeling so soft and manageable. I'm keep to try it over the weekend, when left to air dry. But so far so good.
