Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Thank you Bless. I'm ok JD feel a bit weird. Due on and poorly today so 🤷🏻‍♀️. Be glad when it's the weekend and there's nothing immediate to have to worry about. Thank you.

Pupsie no Bobbi brown immediately near. It's an hour and a half away. I don't mind buying eyeshadows etc online though. It's just foundation I like to see in person. BB is pretty reliable. They have very good people on their counters though so hope to visit them soon.

In other news. I hate my bloody haircut. 🙄

SallieSallow · 31/05/2018 21:08

You're bound to feel weird for a while Enid Flowers I hope you're managing to eat and get some sleep. Did you decide against going to the wedding?

botemp · 31/05/2018 21:45

Eek so much to catch up on, surely I'll miss things. Apologies in advance, pull me up on it if you need an answer from me on something specific.

Weird sounds about right, Enid, it takes a while to digest it all. Take your time, spend it all (time that is, I developed a rather dangerous spending habits at the time Blush) gazing at eyeshadow swatches online or whatever keeps you busy.

mint, your pores, are they basically empty and large-ish? Does it just seem product seeps in and takes up space rather than having a build up of sebum in them?

I'm also one with little visible lid space and I never really had smooth eyelids either. Not even as a child, mine are more Giselle Bundchen than Jennifer Lawrence though. Don't get why people are so displeased with them and are deemed a flaw, I quite like them Confused

Anyhow in terms of makeup I've never done much with the eyes as it's either very heavy handed looking or a lot of effort and it just reads as one colour. Can only ever do a kitten flick, anything more than that appears like I'm wearing black all over. I sometimes use up a bit of shading powder in the sockets, or remnants of blush over the lid to help tie all the colours in my face together in a subtle wau. Big fan of tightligning. I use any old felt tip type pen for a quick slick of black but I do really love the Laura Mercier cake liners that are specially designed for tightligning , you need a good brush to go with it though. The alternative colours are lovely too, the brown for a subtler look and then they have several good colours to go with your eye colour. You can also do a bit more below the bottom lash line (leaving the lower waterline bare) and tilt the line up rather than full flicks above. The Elizabeth Arden smokey eye pencils are really good for this, the espresso one is good for daytime.

Sallie, I'm not the biggest fan of the boob or bust method. I think it works well if you're full busted but it's very challenging if you're in the small back big cup category, especially if you're more a tear drop shape or bottom heavy as most large cups sizes are full cup types. I prefer measuring in centimetres as it's more accurate than inches and settling somewhere between the old measurements method and the more extreme boob or bust one.

SallieSallow · 31/05/2018 22:22

I used to have quite a big non-hooded eye space and because I'm dark I could 'take' the vibrant, deeper colours and black winged eyeliner etc. The hoodedness is a recent thing for me & it's down to age related drooping and sagging Sad so like you said Bo using lots of different shadows now just looks too heavy or all the colours merge into one and looks like a bruise/black eye Shock

I've been looking into tightlining and I'm a bit confused as some people seem to mean using eyeliner as close as possible to the root of the lashes (which I will attempt) but some are talking about lining the waterline/inner rim which I'm not keen on as have sensitive/watery eyes, plus wouldn't that make your eyes look smaller?

Bo I'm glad I'm not the only one that isn't a fan of boob or bust, and yes I think my boobs are tear drop shaped. They just sat there looking very sad right at the bottom of the bra whilst the top half of the cup was completely empty. I was surprised the 32 back fitted but that could have been because it was 'taking' from the way too big cups. I think I'll have to brave a shop and try some on. My bralets are nice and comfy for every day but I'd like a couple of decent proper bras to give me a bit more shape up top under my going out clothes.

Ollivander84 · 31/05/2018 22:27

Sallie - there does seem to be two ways! Lining the upper water bit is v different from the lower, it doesn't make them look smaller, it just pulls any eye look together by getting rid of the empty space
Some people do the wiggling in the roots of the lash technique
This is me with both, I lined the water bit with a liner then used a black shadow along the upper lid and took it right into the roots

bo yes I have gone a bit spendy. Blush It's difficult to process it all. Family dynamics have changed, that's not something I'd ever considered before but I guess that happens to everyone when they lose a close family member. It's weird and hard. Swatches and beauty vlogs sound just the thing. 💗

Sallie Still going. I'm sure it'll be good. Just feeling poorly that's making me fret. DH is making sure I'm fed and watered. Grin So glad he's here. Flowers

I just used some of the Starskin hand mask gloves. Easy to use, smell lovely and quite relaxing. Not convinced they've done that much. Certainly not enough to justify the price (£8.50 per pair. 1 use only.) My hands are good condition anyway so that could be why. A nice treat but I wouldn't purchase again. (I bought two pairs.) They don't do anything that a handscrub followed by hand cream doesn't do.

botemp · 31/05/2018 22:37

You basically wiggle in pigment between the lashes, it doesn't make eyes look smaller, rather it makes lashes look fuller and wispier. Big open lashes without a heavy clumpy mascara is basically what you're going for to make up for a lack of eyeshadow trickery.

According to boob or bust I measured in at 28GG Shock it was a comical sight after an impossible search to find something in that size. I need a plunge style bra, preferably with a bit of padding as I'm wide set as well. I think you're better off understanding the type of bras work best for your shape and trying various sizes with different brand than blindly chasing the measurements. There's a Reddit that's quite detailed and helpful as it goes a bit beyond just the measurements.

Sallie I liked the mumsnet intervention measuring method. (Think that's the one you're talking about too). It worked for me. (I'm a 28/30 ff so not huge but a trickier size) But I realised that it's not just size that influences how your bras fit but your breast shape too. I found something online at the time that talked about different widths, heights, shapes etc. Where they're heaviest, how they 'hang'. Can't remember what it was but if you google about breast shapes you might find something. Sure it's had lots of discussion on bra blogs. (They're a thing!) I'm fuller at the bottom so slightly padded balcony shaped bras with a high centre gore fit me best but a full cup looks terrible, wide wires really hurt and plunge bras give me four boobs. Bra buying is so so difficult!

Ollivander84 · 31/05/2018 22:41

I'm a bit the opposite. I measure 34 underbust but wear a 32, and technically I measure as a HH but I need a JJ

EnidButton · 31/05/2018 22:43

Cross posted! That reddit looks great. I'll have a browse too.

The makeup artist at Bobbi Brown used the 'liner under base of lashes' technique. It looked really good. Surprising the difference it makes. I need to read that eye article too.

botemp · 31/05/2018 22:46

^That was to Sallie

Enid, yes the family dynamics tend to intensify, it's draining on top of everything else. They settle eventually when you all realise you're all just rather hopeless at processing it but there's usually some sort of blow up or scuffle along the way with some competitive grieving to boot.

I recently discovered a new YouTube account, may be of interest to you. It's more product focused with brand overviews, but with a very honest approach. Less main stream brands along with some high end luxury ones. It's quite a nice change from all the tutorials and usual YouTube shilling.

Tantric I will do a swatch tmrw.

My hooded eyelids were nothing like Gisele's or Jennifer's. I'd not have been unhappy with those - beautiful women. Mine were starting to reduce my line of sight. See attached.

I can't remember who asked how much it was. It was £££ but my issue was half caused by eyebrow skin and half by forehead sagging so I had a mini brow lift too. And I also had the most tiny bit of liposuction (inner thigh) to fill that crack in my forehead. OMG. The lipo was the most painful part for sure. How people have that done rather than healthy diet and exercise is beyond me. I could have had my eyelids done on the NHS but you have to wait a year and have regular measurements taken. I didn't want to wait once I'd made my mind up.

Recovery is very straightforward if just having the kids done. The forehead bit is more involved. There was a lot swelling and bruising though. I'd post pics but I don't want to scare anyone! Two weeks post op I was giving the Vote of Thanks speech to 200 people on graduating with my degree so it has definitely settled down by then!

So that's your before picture is it pupsie ?

TantricTwist · 01/06/2018 00:59

I'll be honest, it's kinda wierd just seeing your eyes without the rest of your face pupsie Grin

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 06:55

@botemp yes I think they are empty and largish, what causes this and what can I do?

My nose bothers me, it's never smooth! Tiny little 'bobbles' and my skin is quite textured which I dislike Sad.

Also I'm not sure if it's the warm weather but every morning I'm waking up to an oily t-zone especially my nose.

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 06:57

Actually bo it's like product won't go into the pores if that makes sense? So the pores are empty dots and no base will stay on them it kind of just wipes off in that area, does that make sense??

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 07:07

Would a retinol product help me? LRP redermic maybe?? Looked at the night cream on boots and in the blurb it says no fragrance but right at end of ingredients it says parfum so am a bit confused by that!

botemp · 01/06/2018 07:19

Yes , that makes sense and what I would call 'empty pores'. I asked, mint, because it's a characteristic of Rosacea. So is a textured nose. Along with breakouts that are not so traditional. Not diagnosing here as you're both a difficult one to self evaluate with the dysmorphia at play and I'm not any sort of medical anything but it would explain quite a bit of your issues.

Big fat no to retinol. What would help is seeing a dermatologist about this if it is potentially Rosacea but I know the dysmorphia makes that almost impossible for you. Would the friendly GP ar your practice be someone you could discuss it with?

Good morning Smile

Pupsie, I have similar colour eyes to you and I have a MAC eyeshadow called Shale which sounds like a very similar colour to the Dusty Mauve you bought. I think the colour is great (unless my eyes are a bit red - they're very sensitive). I also have the Stone eyeshadow from Bobby Brown (I see you have the pencil shadow in that colour) but don't wear it so much anymore - it's a bit shimmery. Perhaps I should dig it out again for evenings. It's a grey-brown-v slight mauve tint if I remember correctly?
Thanks for the Salli Hughes link.

Olli, 17 minutes sounds more reasonable if doing v detailed eyes. I've had people telling me I should be doing day make-up in 3-5 mins but it takes me that long to do one eye! I'm clearly v slow as not doing anything complicated and don't wear any foundation etc! I LOVE your eye make-up in that photo. Perhaps you should start doing videos on You Tube

Sallie -good luck with the hair dye. Thanks for the Beauty Blender info. I'll check out the Real Techniques too Mint. Thank you.

Sallie - I am with you on the bra thing. I also measured myself recently using the Better Bra Campaign system (found a link on Mumsnet). Size was completely different to what I was wearing. It was accurate for the band size (I had been wearing too big a band) but the cup size it gave me was too big - none of the new bras I ordered fitted right. I'm glad it's not just me!!!! Now I've ordered a whole load of bras to try using the new smaller band size and the cup size that I think I am Grin

Enid I hope you feel better soon. Sorry you're feeling poorly and sorry you don't like the haircut Sad Flowers

I think you all sound gorgeous if your eyes are like Gisele and Jennifer Lawrence!

Grin[grin[Grin at LRP spray on anti-depressant!!!

botemp · 01/06/2018 07:33

Well obviously we're all gorgeous Grin (please note the emoji's hooded eyes) at least isn't that what everyone who's intimidated by the S&B boards thinks?

Quite a few celebs known for their beauty have hooded eyes, it makes you go quite sultry and that always sells in film. Us mere mortals often get caught out looking half asleep or on drugs instead...

Yes that's my before pic Tantric. I felt I always looked angry/cross/tired.

mintmagnummm · 01/06/2018 08:15

@botemp thank you. I have wondered if I had rosacea. Defo no to dermatologist as you already guessed lol, gp not particularly helpful either tbh as she tells me I have nice skin lol but I'm not comfortable letting them look for too long or too closely at me.

If I tell you my routine can you tell me if it's ok for potential rosacea and if there's anything you would add?....

Bo yes looking half asleep is pretty much my look, esp as I usually always feel like I'm half asleep.
I am finding the Alpha H eye gel is actually making somesort of difference around the eye area, tightening up the lids and reducing under eye lines quite considerably.
