Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I seem to find mine stays on ok, but I really work it in the lashes as well. I use any, currently on a models own one. Urban decay 24/7 are good for staying power though

My eyes are quite hooded and I've found a wash of colour with the outer edge darker works quite well, I saw it on YouTube if I can find the link again...

Ollivander84 · 30/05/2018 22:56

Stephanie Lange! That's the YouTube one. She can be slightly irritating but her hooded eye makeup tutorials are good

Ollivander84 · 30/05/2018 22:57

Starts about 5 mins in and you can do the whole thing or she gives you points to stop at for day time

EnidButton · 30/05/2018 23:37

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I'm going to watch that tomorrow thank you. Plan on staying in bed!

Ollivander84 · 31/05/2018 00:21

Enid - she has loads so worth looking at the others, you'll probably get stuck in a YouTube loop like I did. Ended up watching both "how to fold fitted sheets" and Tati beauty room cleanout - oh for a 60 second raid on her makeup!

TantricTwist · 31/05/2018 00:26

Thanks Oli for posting the video, I have puffy hooded eyes and her technique is slighty different to mine and way better so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Enid have a good rest tomorrow, I didnt know it was today till the others mentioned it earlier Flowers

mintmagnummm · 31/05/2018 06:26

Sallie yes I use the real techniques beauty blender.

I've got small eyes with hardly any lid on show! Hate it! I might look at the bb sticks as I like a stick shadow, got a no7 one but not impressed!

TantricTwist · 31/05/2018 08:19

My eyes are very hooded, they are exactly like Jennifer Lawrences eyes, so I've never really needed to wear much shadow tbh (as you cant see it) but have always worn mascara with a swipe of something brown on the lids and something darker at the edges when I can be bothered or am going out out.

SophieLion · 31/05/2018 09:51

Great make-up tips Olli! Can I ask, roughly how long does it take you to do your make-up on a normal day? (not evening). I'll watch that You Tube video too - although I don't think I have hooded eyes - it's all useful. Thank you.

Yes Sallie it might be a good idea to ask for advice as to what hair colours to use. I dye my hair (just the front bit usually) to my natural colour as I am getting some whites at the front and use two colours from the no. 6 row, one no. 7 colour and one no. 8 colour. The 7 and 8 colour I use a much smaller % of compared to the no. 6s.

I'd never heard of the Beauty Blender. How does it help foundation application? I have a foundation brush from MAC (looks like a paintbrush really) but I rarely use it. Just use my fingers normally.

Pupsiecola · 31/05/2018 10:11

If I'm going out I sometimes tightline with a gel liner of a BB pencil. (Gawd, anyone remember doing that in the 80s with white pencil?!).

Do ask for advice on colours for the eyeshadows. I had three variations of brows but at the event Hannah Brown suggested the Dusty Mauve woult make my eyes pop (they're sort of brown/green/hazel). I would never have chosen mauve but it's now my fave.

Pupsiecola · 31/05/2018 10:15

This what I use all the time now. Quite similar colours but the Golden Brozne is a bit shimmery for evenings. The stone I wear most days and the mauve is my new one. I either wear alone or with the Allspice sparkle dabbed on top (conservatively!). I'm no expert. I need it to be subtle and simple and quick and easy. It's a joy for me though after having my dreadfully droopy eyelids fixed.

Sali Hughes' column talked about simple eyes a few weeks ago.

Ollivander84 · 31/05/2018 10:34

Sophie - 17 minutes! I timed it the other day but that did include replying to some texts

mintmagnummm · 31/05/2018 12:51

Has anyone tried the lancome shadow sticks?

TantricTwist · 31/05/2018 12:55

Ooo pupsie I've never used pencil cream shadows, yours all look like colours I would use with my green eyes.

At the moment I am still using MAC corduroy powder eyshadow, I've used the same one since I bought it a couple of years back which I love and it last forever.

I've experimented with smashbox stone cream eyeshadow which just looked like I'd smeared dirt on my eyes Confused so have avoided trying anything else.

I really need to get those small eyeshadow brushes Stephanie uses at the outer corner and a good darker shadow that will stay put.

TantricTwist · 31/05/2018 13:07

Has anyone bought the M&S summer beauty box? I wasnt going to but I just couldn't resist there are some lovely items in it so well worth £15.
I always like the perfumes they choose, plus they have This Works pillow spray I want to try and the Origins moisturiser, nuxe aftersun, prai neck stuff looks interesting.
DD will love the EOS lip balm and we will fight over the make up bag Grin which I'm sure she'll end up with.

EnidButton · 31/05/2018 15:53

Sounds very nice Tant. I used to love Eos balms. Love the feel of the sphere, genius packaging.

I just added Bobbi brown shadow stock in mauve to my basket. I also have greeny hazel eyes. Smile Looking at the glittery shadows now. Hard decisions!

Pupsiecola · 31/05/2018 16:50

Do you have a BB counter near you Enid? I can't remember where you are...

BlessYawnBless · 31/05/2018 16:58

Just a brief check in.

Enid, I hope yesterday went as well as it could. Flowers

I like Frezyderm a lot for work. The other day I had to be outside for more than two hours in total, it held up nicely and worked well under my foundation that day. No pink patches to report either.

Sooo disappointed to learn that LRP don't make a spray on anti-depressant. Grin

TantricTwist · 31/05/2018 17:54

pupsie would you do a swatch for us of your Bobbi Brown eyeshadow pencils. The Stone one online looks like a matt purple not /grey brown as described and the Mauve looks quite glittery.

I'm quite tempted by the Stone is it very easy to apply?
do you just draw it on? use a brush? Confused

SallieSallow · 31/05/2018 19:05

Ooh lots of great suggestions here, thank you Smile I'm going to watch/read everything mentioned too. I have LOADS of eyeshadow palettes (Tarte and urban decay mainly) so I'd rather not buy more but hopefully I can get some ideas to use what I've got. And I'll look into tightlining too.

But I think what I really need is my droopy eyelids fixed like Pupsie - how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking Pupsie and how long was the recovery time?

Sophie I saw a nice dark red majirel on amazon but think I do need some expert advice before taking the plunge.

This is a beauty blender, www.amazon.co.uk/beautyblender-classic-make-sponge-original/dp/B000HRVC5I?tag=mumsnetforum-21
you can get cheap dupes on amazon but read the reviews first as some of them are a bit crap, but some of them are just as good as the 'real' thing for less than half that price.

My makeup goes on so much better with one, it doesn't sit in my pores or cling to dry patches like it does when I use my fingers or a brush. You do use a bit more foundation though as the B.B. is used damp and gives quite a sheer finish so you need to build up if you need more coverage. I think it's worth it though to get the smoother finish that I want.

JDSTER · 31/05/2018 19:10

Enid hope you’re holding up ok.
Tant I saw on another thread M&S beauty box and it looks good. I really rate their perfumes.

mintmagnummm · 31/05/2018 19:12

The real techniques one is good Sophie it's the only one I use

mintmagnummm · 31/05/2018 19:13

Think I'm going to buy a lancome shadow stick rather than a bb one. I like lancome make up (except the bases due to fragrance grrrr!) I've not been overly impressed with bb in the past

SallieSallow · 31/05/2018 19:18

Sorry I have another question though it's not skincare related as it's about bras this time.

Does that boob or bust method that's always mentioned here work for everyone? I tried it, was told I was a 32F, rather shocked as I wear a B cup currently if I even bother with a proper bra (mainly wear those bralet style things that are like very light control sports bras).

But decided to trust it and duly ordered, the back was fine but I could scoop and swoop until the end of time and not come close to filling the cup, I could have fitted both of my boobs in one Blush Wondering if I did something wrong, I followed the instructions exactly though and did it a few times as I thought F cup sounded very wrong Confused I like the style of the bra & would like to order one in a smaller cup size but don't know how far down to go, given the 'method' doesn't seem to work for me.
