Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I've been watch 'The Split' on BBC iplayer, as recommended by a friend, between writing boring reports and things and its brilliant, plus they all wear fabulous clothes and jewellery. Well worth a gander.

I'm going to try my itcosmetics cc cream today to see if the lasting power is better in this humidity.
Also why do I sometimes get little dots on my face (mainly chin) in the colour of my base when I apply it? Does that even make sense?! Lol so I mean like foundation coloured dots in my pores when I apply my base...

SophieLion · 30/05/2018 10:16

Enid Thanks** Also thinking of you today.

Joz, if it helps, I use a combination of L'Oreal Cool Cover and Schwarzkopf Igora. I have to mix 4 colours and use certain proportions of each one and then add 20% developer (same amount of developer as total amount of hair dye). Sounds complicated but really isn't!

Each dye is a little tube so I just use what I want each time so no waste.
Also put Vaseline all around your hair line so you don't stain your skin.

SophieLion · 30/05/2018 10:17

Sorry don't know why the bold was all off in my message Hmm

SophieLion · 30/05/2018 10:32

Oh the L'Oreal cool cover is properly called L'Oreal Majirel cool cover (Sallie mentioned Majirel above).

Pupsiecola · 30/05/2018 10:35

Enid you're in my thoughts today Flowers.

TantricTwist · 30/05/2018 12:55

Enid big hugs for today my lovely xx

Tsmummy08 · 30/05/2018 17:24

Thinking of you Enid xx

SallieSallow · 30/05/2018 18:51

Much love and hugs Enid you've been in my thoughts today Flowers ❤️

SallieSallow · 30/05/2018 18:53

Sophie I think I need a blend with the Majirel too which is confusing me. I should go into Sally's (appropriately named Grin) and see what they recommend.

mintmagnummm · 30/05/2018 19:02

Ok so I think I like my nars tm better (as in the way it feels etc) just wish I could find something to set it that doesn't irritate or dehydrate me!

mintmagnummm · 30/05/2018 19:03

Better than the itcosmetics cc cream that was meant to say

SallieSallow · 30/05/2018 21:32

Mint do you use a beauty blender or similar to apply your foundation? As my makeup tends to sit in my pores and make them look worse if I use a brush or my fingers, whereas the damp beauty blender (I use a cheap dupe from amazon) gives a better/smoother finish.

I have a makeup related question about eye makeup for those who wear it and are around my age (late 40s).

I wear very little eye makeup for work/everyday (neutral eye shadow, mascara, brow pencil) but I used to love doing a more dramatic look with black eyeliner/flicky cats eye and quite vibrant eyeshadows for occasions and nights out. I'm not the sort of person who thinks older women can't/shouldn't do this that or the other (and I love my long dyed hair Grin) but I'm coming to the conclusion that my days of being able to carry off the dramatic/smokey eye look are sadly over Sad especially at this time of year when I'm going out in daylight.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all for a look that is more noticeable than my everyday basics (ideally including eyeliner) but still quite subtle and not as 'obvious'? I've poked around on YouTube but most of the tutorials I've found (even for the over 50s) still seem to involve lots of different eyeshadows and heavy black eyeliner which I'm trying to get away from.

EnidButton · 30/05/2018 21:54

Thank you very much everyone. I really do appreciate it. Flowers

Pupsiecola · 30/05/2018 22:02

Lovely to hear from you Enid. I hope you have a good night's sleep X

Sallie I love the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Sticks. I have 4 different colours. They are so easy to apply and last well. I just use that on my lid to the crease then blend up a bit with fingers. If I'm going out out I add a touch of shimmer eyeshadow on top, dabbed on with fingers. Then their smoky eyes mascara, sometimes some eyeliner, and I'm done.

EnidButton · 30/05/2018 22:12

Thank you. Pretty drained!

I've been looking at the BB eyeshadow sticks too. I know Sali Hughes rates Burberry ones but I do like Bobbi B generally so think they'd be a safer buy.

Ollivander84 · 30/05/2018 22:33

Sallie - few ideas

I often wear one shadow over the lid then darken the outer edge. So a mid brown on the lid, and a dark brown at the outer corner

Line the upper lid with dark eyeshadow

Tightline the upper lid, this really makes a difference, so line the wet part of the upper lid and work it into the roots of your eyelashes

A dab of shimmer on the very middle of your eyelid or inner corner

Do a wing but a very tiny one so it just flicks up, that can be really nice and simple

Darker matte shadow in the crease, metallic or shimmer on eyelid

Line lower lashline with a bright colour or contrasting one, eyeshadow can be softer than pencils and look nicer

EnidButton · 30/05/2018 22:36

Olli When you tight line, do you find it cones off quickly? Just where it touches the wet part. My eyes are pretty small and I'd like to define them more but not skilled enough to line properly.

EnidButton · 30/05/2018 22:37

Cones =comes

SallieSallow · 30/05/2018 22:40

Enid Flowers I hope you're as ok as you can be and also wishing you a good nights sleep xxx

I've got some shadow sticks from kiko but I made the mistake of going for my usual darker more dramatic colours which now make me look like I've been thumped in the eye Confused I'll have a look at the Bobbi brown ones now.

Pupsie what eyeliner do you wear and how do you wear it? I'm used to doing the winged eye so need to find a way of toning it down - and probably invest in some new eyeliner as all mine are liquid or gel ones. I might try tightlining but I have sensitive/watery eyes so that might not be the best idea.

SallieSallow · 30/05/2018 22:47

Thank you Olli I've just seen your post now. Your eye make up looks amazing in the pics I've seen of you but I think using all the different shadows (especially the darker or shimmery ones) is too much for me now as my lids are all baggy and hooded Sad and I have so many gorgeous palettes too Sad I'll definitely have a go at tightlining, I guess I'll need to buy a pencil eyeliner rather than trying to use gel or liquid one.

EnidButton · 30/05/2018 22:50

Yes, which eyeliner do you use to tightline Olli?

Sallie Sorry, I'm slightly high jacking your question here! I want to know the same too though. I looked at myself today and just thought ugh. So I think I'd like to try some new things. Eye make up has never been something I'm very good at.
