Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Thanks Bo. I will look into those...

BlessYawnBless · 29/05/2018 13:31

LRP Seroxat sprayed lightly over face

Not sure if this is a typo/autocorrect error but I used to take an anti-depressant called Seroxat.
So I have to ask, what on earth does LRP Seroxat do?!

BlessYawnBless · 29/05/2018 13:32

I posted too soon. Today is a big test day for Frezyderm. Will report back later but it's had a tough job to do so far and is standing up to it very well.

botemp · 29/05/2018 13:36

I'm guessing it's a typo and meant to be serozinc, but spray anti-depressants sound like a marketing opportunity waiting to happen.

Joz, no expertise with hair colour at all, but couldn't you order some supplies from a professional supply shop? It's all tubes, you just have to measure out the appropriate amounts with a digital scale. At least, it doesn't look that complicated when they do it in salons.

Stuck record over here but...

I have a largish messy scratch on my inner forearm from squashing dried tree branches into the bin. Very obvious, been there a week with no fading. Covered it in cicaplast and a plaster last night and it's improved about 50% 😲 That's unbelievable. Now hopeful it might not be noticeable by tomorrow.

It's the B5 right? Nothing else? I'm thinking I should look again more seriously at anything containing B5.

EnidButton · 29/05/2018 14:03

By largish I mean an inch and a half long. I accidentally exaggerated. Blush

miffy2 · 29/05/2018 15:09

Enid Cicaplast is indeed the 'magic' cream in this house! I use it after gardening too; the kids use it if they have any type of rash, DH too.

EnidButton · 29/05/2018 15:31

It's amazing stuff!

My bareminerals invisible bronze has arrived. I got the fair/light. It's very very subtle which is exactly what I wanted. Slight sheen to it, soft, pinky toned light brown. No orange-ness and it'd be fairly impossible to over do it. Good sleek packaging too Haven't tried it out properly, just colour swatched it on bare face, but I like it. If anyone has cool toned very pale or skin and they want to try bronzer but are a bit scared of it, I'd say this is the one to go for.

Also got urban decay eyeshadow primer as I have oily lids so shade never lasts. Got original, worked really well on back of my hand.

A completely different subject but Oroblu shock up tights are so so good! Bit pricey but they smooth any bumps out and lift your bum up without crushing you and creating a tidal wave of muffin top where they end. Shame they're not more widely available and the skin tones are very limited plus they aren't matte but not overly shiny. I like 'em.

SophieLion · 29/05/2018 16:08

Joz - I asked my hairdresser colour girl to tell me what she was using on my hair. She helpfully obliged and I bought the exact same colours. So now I do it myself. Save myself money and time and a trip to the hairdresser - don't like going to hairdressers AT ALL!!!!!!

(N.B. We can buy professional/salon products from normal shops here though - not sure that's possible in the UK....)

SophieLion · 29/05/2018 16:09

And Joz, she also told me amounts and I weigh it out using the kitchen scales. Not had any problems so far.

botemp · 29/05/2018 16:54

Good to hear that about the bare minerals bronzer, Enid. Although I'll have to reconsider the colour for me, it might not show up for me if you'd struggle to overdo it.

I like Oroblu tights too (quite easy to find here) but do find they run easily.

The cicaplast magic is partly down to the B5 (there are some studies that B5 oral supplements are a good addition for Acne sufferers) but there are also a few other ingredients in cicaplast that aid it, some sort of zinc, copper, and manganese complexes if I'm remembering right. I believe that's related to research surrounding wound healing.

Just an FYI as I heard that IT Cosmetics are going to be stocked in Boots UK from this Friday! Not sure if in stores or online only but I should be able to order too, using my UK->Ireland forwarding service. I just hope they have a decent range.

EnidButton · 29/05/2018 18:29

Oh yes I remember now. I like the sound of copper and zinc too. When I have more time I'll look into it properly.

I need those tights to last two events so fingers crossed they don't run!

I'll let you know about the bronzer when I've tried it properly. I guess it depends on what effect you're looking for. I'm hoping for some subtle warming so it just looks like I'm healthy and not as drained. So no obvious colour difference. Lightly sun kissed I suppose.

mintmagnummm · 29/05/2018 18:29

Ok so the last two days my nars tm has become streaky throughout the day. It goes on lovely then as the day goes on I notice orangey streaks and random patches! 🤔

SallieSallow · 29/05/2018 18:32

Joz I'm looking at a 'mix your own' hair dye too, majirel is meant to be a good brand - Sally Beauty supplies sell it plus lots available on line but I'm a bit baffled by which shade to get as I want a deep non-orange red. I currently use garnier Olia deep red (which comes out a dark ruby/garnet on my hair) but I have to use two boxes.

I'm another that uses bar soap for arm pits and feet (I have a tea tree one) and the bioderma oil for the rest of my body. I only wash my hair once every 5-7 days and do everything hair related before I wash my body so never noticed any oil transfer.

botemp · 29/05/2018 18:36

It's usually after a few wears, Enid, never had them run on the first wear. I've just checked, Sephora in France stock Bare Minerals and I think Hourglass too, so I'll wait till then to see what suits me best, if at all, I'm generally not a fan of the feel of mineral makeup.

mint, has it been ridiculously hot where you are too? May just be down to that? Oxidisation definitely happens faster in hotter weather and it breaks apart quicker.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 29/05/2018 18:40

Bo yes it has indeed! Anything I can do to prevent this though?

botemp · 29/05/2018 19:08

I'm sure Olli will know better than me, I hardly ever wear base makeup and definitely avoid wearing it in any sort of heat.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 29/05/2018 20:15

It's a tricky one. You could try a primer or a setting spray to see if it helps

mintmagnummm · 29/05/2018 20:33

I already use frezyderm so don't think a primer will work on top of that as it's a very similar consistency

Ollivander84 · 29/05/2018 20:41

Yep definitely. Setting spray or powder? It might just be one that doesn't work in heat. I tend to either go with nothing, a Korean BB cream or something properly heavy duty like double wear depending what I'm doing

TantricTwist · 29/05/2018 22:17

enid have you sorted out what to wear yet for both of your events? Did you find anything suitable that fits and that you like?

I was out all day today and just wore frezyderm, no make up at all and my cheeks behaved and didn't go red in the slightest so I'm beyond happy.

mint how long do you leave it between applying frezyderm and Nars, it was very humid today so myabe it just took longer for frezy to dry?

Pupsiecola · 29/05/2018 22:58

I've been just using Frezyderm with Clarins Beauty Flash Balm on top in this heat and that's worked well.

EnidButton · 29/05/2018 23:57

Yes Tant I sent you a pm earlier to say thank you :)

Jozxyqk · 30/05/2018 00:27

Haha at my typo! Yes, it was supposed to say LRP Serozinc. My new tablet is still determinedly changing random words that it thinks I have misspelled, & refusing to accept my alterations on the odd occasion. I liked my old tablet but it went to silicon heaven, alas.

Thanks for the hair dye recommendations - I will look into those. I have never had my hair coloured at the salon, I'm more of a DIY type... I did used to use henna on it, back in the days when it was enormously long & I never went to the hairdresser. However it takes ages & the mess! I now officially have the other extreme of DIY hair... I got a buzzcut. Grin So it seems somewhat wasteful to use a whole box of dye at a time for my half inch of hair, when it needs redoing twice a month. (I get a phenomenal growth rate, especially in the summer.)
