Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Pupsie I've tried one of the hask shampoos and conditioners but didn't really rate it tbh :-(.
Also not sure about the LRP vit c, I'm not a massive fan of LRP and haven't much liked anything of theirs I've tried! I'd imagine it contains fragrance too?? Thank you for your suggestions though x

botemp · 28/05/2018 10:49

Pupsie, mint, the LRP Redermic C is in a silicone base and IIRC contains fragrance too. The Vichy is an L-AA formulation.

You look lovely Olli, I've always been curious what exactly you model as you mentioned having to bring your own wardrobe IIRC.

OP posts:
botemp · 28/05/2018 10:50

X-posted with mint there.

TantricTwist · 28/05/2018 11:17

I'm using the TO powder Vit C which I like because it melts in very well with my LRP toleraine.

They provide a small scoop/spoon and I use half a spoon.

Its not grainy or siliconey and I already know I'm fine with the lrp toleraine fluide non oily moisturiser.

Ollivander84 · 28/05/2018 11:30

botemp - it depends. If I'm doing stuff to add to my own portfolio then I often bring clothes, stuff for publishing will have a wardrobe but I have a lot Blush of dresses so I often bring things to add that I know fit well/suit
Just applied for a casting for plus size swimwear so will see if I hear anything from that crossed fingers! Doing a group shoot next month which is to get some images for my portfolio and practice in as I've not worked much since my back operation

BlessYawnBless · 28/05/2018 20:05

So, a week in to my new skincare routine and I see some improvements. My skin has always loved, and responded quickly to, BHA which I started last Monday.

However, I've realised that my skin is ageing much faster than I'd been aware of. I've been in denial.
I went foundation shopping a few days ago. I decided to start in Space NK. My local one has tons of natural light and it's easy to take the mirror over to the window to check everything. But oh gosh my skin couldn't handle being seen in such bright daylight!

Skin texture is rough with some weird bumpy patches. I have a lot of hyperpigmentation.
I don't have too many wrinkles but there is some slackness showing.
I've ordered the Vitamin C Booster from Paula's Choice (before I read here about the Vichy one).
I'll alternate the BHA with AHA some nights too.

Is there anything else I can add to help with my issues? I will go for retinol in some form soon, I'm just not ready yet.
(I'm in my mid 50s)

Pupsiecola · 28/05/2018 22:58

I've been using the Bioderma Shower Oil for a few days and have a couple of questions. I read upthread that shower gel can leave a film on the body, which can make deoderant less effective; many people find washing with soap better. Surely oil leaves even more of a film on the body?

Secondly, does anyone lese who's using it feel like they get it in the hair, as in via their hands (wash body, rinse hair sort of a thing)?

Ollivander84 · 28/05/2018 23:01

Pupsie - I wash under arms with soap then anything else all over
I have to use dettol soap or hibiscrub on my armpits but I refuse to use that all over as I like nice smells!

TantricTwist · 28/05/2018 23:46

Yes I only use bar soap under my armpits.

EnidButton · 29/05/2018 00:43

I still use dove body wash on pits etc as it's good to shave with and then rinse my hair before using the shower oil. I should probably see about getting a proper shaving foam.

Talking of sweaty pits...😁 I used Perspirex tonight. Haven't used it since last year but it works really well. Driclor stings too much on me, feels like nettle rash. Perspirex doesn't sting at all. One application and then back to usual deodorant the next day and it lasts a couple of weeks. Just never use either of them after shaving! 😱🔥

EnidButton · 29/05/2018 00:44

I use a bit of hibi scrub under arms as a final wash too. Just to make sure like. Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 29/05/2018 01:08

Me too, Enid! I have an intermittent rash under one arm that has baffled doctors, and Hibiscrub keeps it at bay. Also good for feet.

TantricTwist · 29/05/2018 09:18

MrsS you should try canesten cream under your arm next time you get a rash (could be fungal related)

Tsmummy08 · 29/05/2018 10:15

Looking lovely Olli :)
What are you using on your brows? I'm a redhead too and always hunting for something that looks right with my hair...

Jozxyqk · 29/05/2018 10:31

Is the Vichy vitamin C product, the one that needs to be kept in the fridge? If so, I need an alternative. It just wouldn't be practical for me.

Pupsiecola · 29/05/2018 11:14

Morning all,

I'm looking for a hair serum/product. I've been using Pureology Colour Fanatic but it's almost run out so it's a good time to think about switching. Does anyone use Frizz-Ease products? I'm looking for some heat protection and help with mildly coarse/frizzy hair. Something to put on wet hair for blow drying. As "natural" as possible (so Frizz-Ease probably out?!).

Ty

botemp · 29/05/2018 11:22

Is EVERYONE a redhead on MN?

The Vichy doesn't need to be kept in the fridge officially but it certainly performs better if you do. It's designed to use for a two week period IIRC but there's enough in it for much longer but it's prone to oxidation so the fridge temps helps prevent that somewhat.

Pupsie body cleansing oils work the same as on the face, there's an emulsifier in them that activates upon water contact that breaks down the oil and shower water carries it away. The body ones are slightly differently formulated as you don't tend to use them on dry skin, so usually requires more water to shift so the oil can do it's cleansing bit.

Ah that makes sense, Olli. hope you get the job, I'm always annoyed that swimwear appears to be exclusively modelled by deeply tanned models as if everyone is just that tan, or even wants to be, all the time.

Ts- they're tattooed but I use Barry M take a brow on the hairs

Pupsiecola · 29/05/2018 11:28

Pretty happy with my routine at the moment. I felt it was lacking a little as I'd inadvertently stripped it back quite abit. I'm so glad I went to the Selfridges event. I don't even think I'm going to repurchase my beloved pink Darphin serum Shock.

A dab of Clarins Blue Orchid Oil on the cheeks
A light swoosh of Cosrx Oil Free Moisturising Lotion

Vichy Thermal Water
Clarins Blue Orchid Oil
Cerave PM Night Lotion or Bioderma Hydrabio
Or
LRP Redermic R - every other night (in place of Clarins/Cerave)
Verso Eye Serum - every other night

EMPTIES

Drunk Elephant Vit C - will RP next month when DH goes to the US*
Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner - RP’d for the umpteeth time

ON TRIAL

Clarins Blue Orchid Oil
Clarins Gentle Exfoliating Toner

PLANNED PURCHASES

This is my second round of Redermic R which I’ve been using every other night. I’ve worked on building tolerance and I’d like to switch to something a little stronger now. Still not sure what though.

*I might try the Vichy Vit C. It’s another month until DH goes to the US and whilst I love the DE Vit C, I’m not keen on the price.

I really need to RP some Elasticizer. I used it yesterday having not done so for almost a month (I tend to use it once am month). I've not been enjoying my hair of late. I forget what a difference the PK makes to ease of drying/styling and general manageability/smoothness.

SPECIAL MENTION

I really like the Clarins exfoliator, recommended by Sali Hughes in person. She suggested I build up to every day use, but I think I’m going to stick to every other day. She said I could switch up to Dennis Gross pads after one bottle of the Clarins, but I'll see how I feel when the bottle has finished.

I also really enjoy using the Clarins oil, recommended by Caroline Hirons at the same event.

Frezyderm SPF is obviously fantastic.

SophieLion · 29/05/2018 11:29

I thought the Vichy vit C was for a month - but mine definitely kept for a lot longer in the fridge. You can tell when it's gone off.

botemp · 29/05/2018 11:37

Pupsie, I was discussing anti-frizz product with my hairdresser and he was suggesting from the Kevin Murphy line (as that's what he works with, but I have to say I am really pleased with the shampoo and conditioner) easy rider and motion lotion. The latter is more suited to finer hair though. Have yet to try either. It's all natural adjacent (the usual suspects aren't in it but some silicones are which I actually quite prefer, I've never found a non silicone anti frizz styling product that wasn't also heavy or only effective for about a day).

Less natural (I think, or they're just not selling it as such but it is free of a lot of the usual boycott ingredients) but the best ever results with an anti-frizz blow dry product for swishy salon style hair that lasted, I ever had was Ro+Co Park Avenue. I got it as a sample from SpaceNK but got several uses out of it. Unfortunately, they had discontinued selling it and it was only available in the US then, think Net A Porter sell it now, but it was absolutely lovely, paired well with a BBH. Looked better than a hairdresser's blow dry imo. That type of blow dry doesn't really suit my hair as it is now but otherwise it would definitely be part of my arsenal again.

Jozxyqk · 29/05/2018 11:45

Ah no, in that case the Vichy definitely wouldn't be a good product for me. I need something that can stay in my toiletries bag at a cool-ish room temperature. TBH the price is a bit much for the small amount anyway. AFAIK 1ml = approximately 20 drops, so 1 bottle would last 40 days if you use 5 drops per morning. (Have I worked that out right?) Seems quite pricey per use, I'd rather have something less expensive but more long-term.

botemp · 29/05/2018 11:52

Yes, I get about a month and a half out of it. Were you considering the Melanoma CC as well? That would be more economical and it's a derivative so no stability issues.

OP posts:
Jozxyqk · 29/05/2018 11:55

Ooh - I meant to ask - does anyone know if it's possible to get hair dye that you mix yourself, that's not henna based? The reason I ask is that I've just cut my hair even shorter and, while I like it, my greys are still very visible. I'm cool toned & henna dyes are just too warm for me. Box dyes are generally not good value for hair my length, as it grows out really quickly. I'm naturally similar colouring to Emma Watson (& my hair is now even shorter than hers was!) Apparently I still look quite young, except for the grey...

Jozxyqk · 29/05/2018 12:27

Botemp - Did you mean Melano CC? Yes, that's the main one l was thinking of but I'm not sure how it would do on my skin / alongside my routine.

ROUTINE

I use a face cloth, clean every day - so it gets used twice & then goes in the wash. Likewise my face towel is changed very regularly. I have a stock of each. We're lucky to have some of the softest water in the country, lovely for washing in.

AM
Sukin foaming facial wash, or LRP cleanser if in shower
Rose water (as a toner)
TO vitamin C
LRP Seroxat sprayed lightly over face
Hada Labo Amber serum
Clinique all about eyes cream
Avene light moisturiser, not on T-zone
Biore watery essence SPF 50

PM
If I've worn any makeup - Edenens cleansing oil
Clean face as at morning
Rose water as a toner
Hada Labo amber serum
COSrx BHA if I have time, then 20-30 minutes break
Either BR P50 (5 nights p/w) or TO retinoid 2% (2 x p/w)
LRP Serozinc
Clinique All about eyes cream
Avene moisturiser

EMPTIES

Avene light moisture cream. Good. I'll repurchase it. Only reason I haven't already is because I found a bottle of the LRP toleriane lotion in my drawer, I'd forgotten about. Still definitely in date so I'll use that up first.

ON TRIAL

Hada Labo amber serum. Like it so far. It's thinner than what I was using previously (Vichy dynamic hydration serum). Also it's cheaper and a larger bottle. Definitely don't seem to be reacting to it - I usually break out pretty quickly, it's been a fortnight & no adverse reaction yet.

PLANNED PURCHASES

Potentially Melano CC, as mentioned above. Not keen on the TO vit C. It's gritty & stingy & if I put the tiniest bit too much on, my face looks greasy.
