Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

MrsD thank you but I have tried Mitchum and bloody hated it! Not only did it really irritate my underarms it was also ineffective for me. Was a shame as I loved the smell of the powder fresh.

SallieSallow · 26/05/2018 14:04

I think I need to measure out my sunscreen as not sure if I'm using enough. I do use a different one on my neck and chest area though (same as Dr Sam) and my IT cosmetics cc cream has spf 50 so although I wouldn't rely on it alone it must add to overall 'volume' of spf on my face. I top up with the bioderma spray too if I'm going to be outside for any length of time ie if I go and sit in a pub beer garden for a walk after work.

Mint I don't sweat much but my arm pits get very itchy from some deodorants, I've been using a Vichy sensitive roll on one for a while now and like it. I think roll ons and the cream/gel ones are less irritating than sprays but they do take longer to dry.

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 14:16

sophie you’re right, people are very kind on here and helpful.

mint are you using bar soap to wash under your arms, as opposed to shower gel and the like?

mrsd are you a RN?

DH got me a huge bottle of LRP SPF 60(!) while he was away. It says for face and body use but think I’ll keep it for body use, lest I become an oil slick by noon. He stocked me up with three bottles of the toleriane hydrating cleanser and three tubes of double repair moisturiser - he did well Halo

TantricTwist · 26/05/2018 14:21

Mint I was just coming on to confirm what JDster says re bar soap.
There was a thread on here once re the difference using bar soap makes to using shower gel on your arm pits.
I can confirm the difference is amazing and your usual anti perspirant should work like a charm.
Shower gel tends to leave a film so not only does it not wash off your previously applied deodorant properly it leaves a film stopping your new application from working as effectively.
I've tried it along with my sweaty DS and soap makes a massive positive difference.

TantricTwist · 26/05/2018 14:23

I use the womens Mitchum solid stick cream antiperspirant because i loathe roll ons that take forever to dry and they can cause me rashes whereas this is kind to my skin.

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 14:24

Tant you’ve stolen my thunder. I was going to explain all that to Mint if she said she she used shower gel Grin

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 14:29

Article in The Times magazine that might be of interest. LRP SPF voted best by the Australians.

Sorry Blush JD Grin

It makes such a massive difference though doesn't it, I was getting so frustrated that I was always whiffy so soon after showering.

I started using Waitrose bar soap and for some reason have ended up with shield deodorising soap which I'm liking.

TantricTwist · 26/05/2018 14:32

and I don't like using spray deodorant / antiperspirant because I hate breathing it in to my lungs.

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 14:41

Tant Grin. I have cidal and dettol sensitive soaps on the go (only thing that works on whiffy DS armpits) also a nicer one from Waitrose in the shower. I don’t bother with shower gel at all. Dove roll on or sanex roll on (after the soap washing) works well for me. I try and use deodorant on days off and only one I’ve found that works is soft and gentle 0% aluminium in ‘care’ (it has to be this particular fragrance not the other two weirdly enough). It is a spray and my lungs do protest if I don’t run away from where I’ve just sprayed it Grin

Ollivander84 · 26/05/2018 15:03

Just got some pro pics back from my shoot, really pleased with my makeup in them!

MrsDOnofrio · 26/05/2018 15:13

Should also mention that on non-working days I use the Pitrok crystal stick and find that works well but it obviously doesn’t stop sweating as it’s not an antiperspirant.

Several of us having issues with irritation. I’ve never really looked at the ingredients of deodorant, maybe I should, although I’ve always gone for unperfumed ones because the smell of most of them makes me feel nauseous so assume it’s not the fragrance irritating me but who knows!

JDSTER - I’m a student nurse currently (a very mature student obviously, but not the oldest in my cohort surprisingly), due to qualify end of August. Getting very nervous.

ChesterBelloc · 26/05/2018 15:21

I've been using the body Frezyderm on my face for the last few days. I agree that the fragrance is very subtle, (though definitely there).

However, I've been getting very sore, irritated eyes after a while, and am wondering if somehow the sunscreen is working it's way down from my forehead/eyebrows into my eyes, and causing the irritation? It's quite severe, lasts a long time and is very annoying, because I love everything else about it!

So now am wondering if I have to shell out twice as much money for the face one Confused

ChesterBelloc · 26/05/2018 15:24

That post was mainly for bo's benefit, forgot to name check her in it!

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 15:35

Great Mrsd hope all going well. Any ideas where you’d like to work when you qualify?

SophieLion · 26/05/2018 15:49

Mint - I use either a Vichy roll-on or a Bioderma roll-on. Or sometimes a Nivea one. Bioderma is my favourite.
I've used one of those organic crystal sticks (Mrs D mentioned one) but I didn't like it. Didn't feel it did anything. Was a few years ago now so they may well be better ones now.

Bo - I think the Frezyderm body is probably better value for money too. Well here anyway. I order through a discount Greek pharmacy site and this time paid €14.14 for the 125ml body and €12.24 for the 50ml face.

Tant, JDSTER, Reading about the soap reminded me that my derm suggested my almost teen DD wash her armpits with a bar of soap when I asked what deodorant she would recommend. I think Bo had also sent round an article at one point about acid toners being effective deodorants.
Your husband sounds like a ⭐️JDSTER!

Chester, I do have the impression that the Frezyderm runs more easily than other SPFs. Especially when getting hot and sweaty from exercise or the weather.

EnidButton · 26/05/2018 15:54

bo it's ok, I hadn't been yet when I posted. I was preempting it. Just come out. The consultation was excellent and done good things about my hair were pointed out (like it being two different types on one head) but not sure about it still. I'll know once I've played around with it and when I wash it. The colour is excellent though and olaplex has made it very shiny and in good condition. It'll do. Smile

EnidButton · 26/05/2018 15:59

And NO straighteners were used. Grin

It's been a weird week. I look a bit washed out and my forehead has some small spots but my diet hasn't been brilliant and I'm due on next week so all things considered it's not too bad.

After 3 hours of salon lights and mirrors, next on list is bronzer.

SophieLion · 26/05/2018 16:01

Sorry MrsD - didn't mean to imply
that your ice crystal stick doesn't work. Was just saying that the one I used a few years ago was rubbish but was probably the brand. They only had one type here.

mintmagnummm · 26/05/2018 16:45

Thanks Sallie. JDSTER and Tant I double cleanse my pits lol so I use my soaper super shower gel then a soap just under pits. Thanks sophie why do u prefer bioderma?
Sorry if I've missed anyone??

mintmagnummm · 26/05/2018 16:48

I don't think frezyderm runs more on me than others tbh, with my avene if it was very hot sometimes I'd see white streaks on areas of my face. Frezy seems to stay put, I think 🤔....

mintmagnummm · 26/05/2018 17:00

Is this the bioderma one?

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Tiny Lovely People who Live in your Phone and Tell You to Buy Frezyderm Velvet Face SPF50
SophieLion · 26/05/2018 18:12

No Mint. That's not the one I have. Confused now as using a Vichy one (with light blue/turquoise lid) at the moment. Will let you know which Bioderma one it is when I next go to pharmacy.

The Noxema brand is a really popular deodorant here with the Greeks. I don't use it as I think it has an odd smell.

Perhaps you're right Mint that all SPF runs as I used to get a completely white face after running when wearing the Avene SPF (people used to ask if my blood pressure had dropped - I was that white Grin).

SallieSallow · 26/05/2018 18:58

This is the one I have Mint

www.vichy.co.uk/deodorant-48-hour-soothing-anti-perspirant-for-sensitive-skin

It's cheaper on EPP, I usually buy 2 or 3 at a time when I'm placing a skincare order so I get the free p&p.

I don't find my spf runs but I'm not much of an exerciser and don't get hot and sweaty.

I'm glad your hair colour has come out well Enid hopefully you'll like the style once you've fiddled. I'm swerving the whole hairdresser issue these days and cutting it myself.

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 19:01
