Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Thank you Sallie and Sophie, hopefully I'll chill out by tomorrow (literally too, I'm roasting!) and be able to sort it out.

Pupsiecola · 24/05/2018 23:26

I'll ask him tmrw Sophie as he's asleep now but I think he said about how small all the muscles are in comparison to quads and traps and even biceps and triceps.

mintmagnummm · 25/05/2018 07:39

Those of you who use frezyderm, do you massage it in until completely absorbed?

Tsmummy08 · 25/05/2018 07:40

I was thinking about the face muscle thing Pupsie: for muscle to grow e.g. biceps it has to be overworked/injured for the body to repair it, thus making it larger - overworking my facial muscles has caused wrinkles but not larger forehead muscles lol. And like your DH said, facial muscles are really small and designed to make tiny movements, all the time... it's got me thinking and I might end up down a research rabbit hole!

Tsmummy08 · 25/05/2018 07:41

Mint Nope - just rub it on and leave it for a while before attempting makeup. No more spots for me, so maybe it wasn't the Frezyderm - but then I haven't been wearing makeup either...

Pupsiecola · 25/05/2018 07:47

DH just said "muscles and muscles, but faces don't sag and wrinkle because of muscles; it's the skin that's the issue". I think this coupled with the fact that the muscles are so tiny means that in his eyes it would make no difference.

botemp · 25/05/2018 07:57

Yes, it's the infrastructure of the skin that's the issue, it's collagen breakdown and depletion that ages the skin often coupled with a loss of fat (possibly from menopause?). I remember looking into it long ago, facial muscles also sit differently, they're long and narrow and sit diagonally and get exercised plenty by itself IIRC. Scientific studies all concluded it was bollocks at best and more likely to age you at worst. Those programs and books are all just money spinners.

Don't worry about me-railling, Enid, just check the title of the thread Smile

I remember buying ten black dresses then returning them all and buying another ten as none felt good enough to honour my mum. Do you still need other options, or just for the wedding? I'll have some spare time to browse today.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 25/05/2018 10:05

Still need something for funeral. I've seen a couple of jersey type dresses that I'm going to order too. Maybe I should have gone for a skirt and shirt, I don't know. Should've started this last week but it felt wrong when he was still here. Thank you Flowers

EnidButton · 25/05/2018 10:07

Sorry that ^ was in reply to bo

botemp · 25/05/2018 20:02

I understand your frustration now, Enid, after a bit of a browse there really isn't much out there at the moment. I've stuck what I have found and isn't 100% polyester in this Google doc as it's easier to link in there than having to do it individually on here. Hope it's of use, but totally fine if it's not too. I included some from COS as that's one of the few retailers where you'll get a breathable fabric but their express delivery is expensive and would be cutting it fine.

Has anyone watched Dr. Sam's video on SPF application? It's an outrageous amount of product isn't it!

EnidButton · 25/05/2018 23:29

Wow bo! Thank you! I'll go through them now. I've got one jersey dress that looks good although material not great. It'll do if nothing else is right, and tomorrow some jersey dresses from Boden are coming. Think I'll order shoes now too. Thanks again Flowers

SophieLion · 26/05/2018 09:19

Morning all and thanks for the face exercise info. I won't waste my time doing that then! Is facial yoga just another name for facial exercise?

I'll have a look at that SPF video Pupsie. I bought the Frezyderm velvet touch for the body. As i mentioned, it's not a big bottle and a bit pricey so will use it everyday for arms and chest etc but for a full on day at the beach I think I'll have to stick to a cheaper Vichy or Avene so I don't bankrupt myself Grin

Enid Thanks
Bo, not sure if I am supposed to say or not but think it's so kind of you to find all those dresses.

JDSTER · 26/05/2018 09:48

I caught up on the Dr Sam videos. She has a few new ones on there. She measures out a quarter of a teaspoon of SPF and yes it does look a lot once it’s in the hands, ready to apply. She advised applying all around eyes and eyelids. I wish I’d followed that advice all my life!

botemp · 26/05/2018 10:22

Happy to help, Enid. Also, I went to the hairdresser yesterday, shocker, I know, and the world didn't end so passing on the good hair vibes onto you today.

Wouldn't know why it wouldn't be ok to say, Sophie Smile I think it's one of the best part of these threads that we're all so happy to help each other out where we can, skincare related or otherwise.

Can I ask what the fragrance is like on the Frezyderm body SPF? I'm getting really annoyed with the pump on the face one so the tube is looking quite appealing.

And yes, facial yoga is another name for facial exercise. I'm less critical of facial massage as it's pretty harmless provided you know what you're doing and not doing it excessively as you're just moving a bit of fluid buildup and increasing blood circulation. I think I've mentioned the buccal techniques before which is highly effective but they have to be done by someone (medically) trained.

I looked at the Dr Sam video and thought she wasn't using very much Blush Think it's confusing though as I've seen recommendations for the amount for the face range from 1/4 to a whole teaspoon. I think for the Frezyderm I'm closer to using 1/2 a teaspoon than a 1/4, but it may be perception as it's a bit aerated from the pump, if that makes sense Confused

OP posts:
SophieLion · 26/05/2018 12:19

I think I'm just concerned about saying the wrong thing again or being perceived as saying the wrong thing. Blush

Anyway Bo and everyone else on this thread for that matter, the point is that I am very touched by just how caring and kind people can be - especially since we are all strangers (none of you have met in real life, have you?!) - although I guess some of you have "known" each other for 1 1/2 years now.

Bo, I just put a blob of frezyderm face on one finger and a blob of the body one on the other finger and I had to bring the body one right up to my nostril to smell the fragrance. There is a fragrance smell but I don't think it's very strong. I certainly wasn't aware of it on my body today or when I was applying it and can't smell anything on my arms now. Does that help? Consistency seems the same as the face one.

Good to know I'm not missing out then by not doing facial exercise/yoga Grin I do like the Su-Man facial massage that you circulated Bo. I often do it in the evening before going out - feel like it wakens me up and my skin looks more glowy too.

I might measure out amount of SPF I'm using on my face next time I put it on. I did note that Dr Sam said she recommends 1/4 of a teaspoon as most people don't re-apply during the day. I wonder if that means you can use less if you reapply....

EnidButton · 26/05/2018 12:28

I'm very touched by it too Smile It has genuinely helped. People are so kind. Flowers

Hairmageddon is here again. I photos I have a detailed description, I have no clue wtf happened to my fringe last time and no idea what to wear so I'm putting on a jumper dress in 20 degree weather. 🙃

botemp · 26/05/2018 12:55

You didn't do or say anything wrong Sophie and I'm sorry for making you feel that way Flowers

It is unfortunately one of those 'if you haven't been through it' things, and probably the only experience I feel that warrants that phrase.

Anyhow, thanks for the info on the fragrance. I might just chance it for the face, I can always use it up on the body.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 26/05/2018 12:57

Please can someone recommend an effective deodorant, I usually swear by my dove sprays but just lately they don't seem to be cutting it! I'm not a particularly sweaty person but I'm noticing more of a whiff in the armpit area which is completely unacceptable for me I bloody hate it! 😏

botemp · 26/05/2018 12:58

Not hairmageddon again! Shit, Enid, now I feel like I jinxed you with my good hair vibes post earlier today Sad

OP posts:
botemp · 26/05/2018 13:02

I am very very sensitive in the pits area mint, probably more than anywhere else including my finicky face. For absolutely no odour I've been relying on the Lancome Bocage roller (the cream is ok too but not as good and the spray is shit) for forever. It does have fragrance which usually irritates the hell out of my pits but this one doesn't. Sanex 0% is also ok but I prefer the Lancome in warmer weather.

OP posts:
MrsDOnofrio · 26/05/2018 13:53

mint I use Mitchum (the stick version but roll on and spray available too). It’s a 48 hour deodorant; not because I’m particularly sweaty but because most deodorants make me itch terribly but find this isn’t too bad. It performs very well when wearing a thick polycotton uniform on hot wards on 12.5 hour shifts so I do rate it as a deodorant

mintmagnummm · 26/05/2018 13:55

Bo I never even knew lancome did deo!! My armpits are the one area I INSIST on fragrance lol. They are sensitive too, can get very itchy and prickly but I just couldn't use anything unscented in that area! I've heard lots of good things about the Vichy roll on too but also some negatives. I'll have a look at the lancome one thank you 😊

mintmagnummm · 26/05/2018 13:57

Wow it's £££
