Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thanks anyway, Olli.

Random question: does anyone have an unopened bottle/tube of the Frezyderm 125ml spf50 Body Suncreen that they could weigh for me...?

Mine has just arrived (v quickly, I must say), from Chemists Direct on eBay, and the metallic peel-off closure - under the lid, covering the actual hole - seems to have already been mostly peeled back, IFSWIM. The tube also feels quite light for its size (tho that may just be the nature of the formulation).

So if anyone could confirm the actual weight of a genuinely unused tube, I'd be very grateful! As I can't be bothered to send it back unless a significant amount is missing. Very annoying, tho Confused

Thank you Sophie ❤️

Pupsiecola · 21/05/2018 13:13

I've tried the LRP Double Repair and I don't know why but I'm not keen on it!

BlessYawnBless · 21/05/2018 13:33

Olli , do you use concealer if so which one? I'm hoping to go on a mega shop tomorrow looking at new foundations and also maybe try a new concealer, so sorry for all the questions.

I've just ran out of Nars Radiant Concealer in Vanilla. I'm not sure whether to try the newer creme formulation or move to something else (possibly a bit more budget friendly!).

BlessYawnBless · 21/05/2018 13:35

Chester I just used mine this morning for the first time (I did one tiny pump on Saturday too). I'm happy to weight it for you if nobody has a brand new one but the weight will be a wee bit out.

Ollivander84 · 21/05/2018 13:39

Bless - yep! Tarte shape tape or the makeup revolution conceal and define

Ollivander84 · 21/05/2018 13:40

And don't apologise, I love makeup questions Grin addicted

BlessYawnBless · 21/05/2018 14:17

Thanks Olli, Superdrug for MU Revolution I know, but Tarte is QVC I think.
I'm afraid how much I'll be spending tomorrow or whenever I go on this shopping trip!

princessbear80 · 21/05/2018 14:23

Hi everyone, I’m new here. Have been reading the threads and the info sheets. Very useful, thank you.
I’ve started trying to improve my skincare routine. I was a Pears soap and Aldi moisturiser girl before! I’m now double cleansing (oil then milk), using spf50 religiously (biore), still using Aldi Lacura day and night creams which I quite like. At night I use the Aldi glycolic pads after cleansing, and in the morning I use Vichy vit C before moisturiser. My main worries are fine lines, which are showing more now since I recently lost 1.5 stone. And age spots, probably due to reckless sun exposure in teens and early twenties. I’m now 37 and feel like I’ve started looking old.

A few questions if I may...

Does my routine so far look ok?

I’m thinking of adding a serum next, have tried to find one that contains niacinamide, HA and peptides as per the info sheet, that doesn’t cost the earth. Can anyone tell me if the Olay Regenerist 3 serum is any good?

Also I don’t want to over do it and put too much new stuff on my skin, so will try to get serum right first, then try some retinol after the summer. Is that wise?!

Thanks all

princessbear80 · 21/05/2018 14:27

These are the regenerist ingredients

Bless, thank you for your kind offer - I note you said 'pump' tho; do you have the face one? Cos I have the body one, which is in a wide tube... If I've misunderstood, and we have the same thing, it would be very helpful if you were able to weigh it, as so far I've found two varying weights given on Amazon Confused

Ollivander84 · 21/05/2018 14:53

I need to actually sort out what makeup I'm doing for my photo shoot tomorrow. Not a clue at the minute!

EnidButton · 21/05/2018 15:17

Hi Princess 👋🏻 I'm no help atm sorry but sure someone can answer your questions. Pears soap! Love the smell of that.

Bless Where do you use the NARS concealer? I have it in chantilly and use it as a brightener around the outer corners of my eyes and sometimes around nose where it gets slightly red sometimes. I like it enough that I just repurchased for the 3rd time but it is pricey for what I use it for really.

princessbear80 · 21/05/2018 15:43

Thanks for the welcome enid Smile

BlessYawnBless · 21/05/2018 16:07

Sorry Chester, yes in my excitement at trying the Frezyderm this morning I completely missed that you weren't referring to the face one.

BlessYawnBless · 21/05/2018 16:09

Enid I use it under my eyes (I have bad dark circles) , also around my nose and on my chin where there's redness and also on some dark spots on my cheeks.
I had a cheaper one that I liked last year but can't remember which one it was.

mintmagnummm · 21/05/2018 17:16

Bless I do hope you used more than just one pump of frezyderm for your face?!

BlessYawnBless · 21/05/2018 18:01

Yes mint I did today because I was going out.
On Saturday I just used one pump in a small area to see how I liked the texture but I was just testing it. I put my LRP on afterwards as my proper sunscreen.
I think I used about 5 pumps today to do my whole face, I seemed to get good coverage from that amount. I was out in the sun for about 40 minutes this morning. My face isn't pink but my arms are (forgot the sunscreen on them!)

mintmagnummm · 21/05/2018 18:23

Bless phew 😅

SallieSallow · 21/05/2018 19:00

Chester I only use frezyderm face so cant help with the weight question, I'm not sure if anyone is using the body one - Sophie may be?

Hello Princess 👋 with regards to your routine, what cleansing milk are you using, is it a wash off one? I can't comment on the Aldi stuff as it gives me spots so I steer clear, but if you're happy with the moisturisers then I'd keep going. Olay is another brand I don't get on with so no help there either but I'm sure there's someone here that loves Olay regenerist. Not sure if it's the serum or something else though. And yes if you've not used a retinol product before then I'd wait till you see how you get on with whichever serum you decide on before adding it in.

SophieLion · 21/05/2018 19:16

Hello Princess and Bless Smile

Chester and Sallie. - no I'm not using the Frezyderm body SPF but was actually thinking about it today as I find any SPF 50 I use on my arms and legs now (and I use everyday) always seems to leave white marks on my car seats and arm rests (DH getting v cross) and today I even noticed a bit on my handbag Angry.

Will be in a shopping centre tomorrow with lots of pharmacies so will see if I can get a sample. Otherwise will order a bottle to try - can get it for 14 EUR here for 125ml. It's a bit pricey compared to other SPFs: Vichy SPF 50 is roughly the same price for 300ml and the Frezyderm dry mist SPF 50 spray is even cheaper for 300ml.

EnidButton · 21/05/2018 19:49

Thank you Sallie. Flowers

Bless I tried it over Laura mercier corrector under my eyes this evening. I' see how it wears in a couple of hours. Tbf it has its work cut out at the mo.

Things are getting pretty tough here. Really hope I can get some sleep tonight. Cake

botemp · 21/05/2018 19:57

Flowers Enid, feel free to file this away as completely useless advice, as I'm partly convinced it's psychosomatic in my case since it was my mum's remedy for me when I was a restless sleeper as a child, but a lavender pillow does improve the quality of my sleep when I struggle with it. It doesn't get me to sleep any easier or make it magically longer but it's pretty precious for the sleep I do get to be somewhat restorative. I know some really like This Works pillow spray which also has quite a bit of lavender in it but I've never tried. I had a Neom candle with lavender in it at some point, that worked quite well as well.

Chester, I'd return the SPF regardless, you have no idea when it was opened and SPF does degenerate over time. But before returning it, can you post a pic of the INCI for me so I can compare it with the face version?

Welcome, Princess. I think whilst it makes sense to hold off on jumping on the Retinol train in theory, the weight loss factor would have me reconsidering it. Usually when people go on about fine lines here it's dehydration and ageing related so improving skin barrier health alongside humectants as a two pronged attack is a good initial strategy. However, with weight loss you're tackling elasticity issues, mostly. Basically, you want the skin to tighten around your new contours at an accelerated rate to what it will settle to eventually. The best thing to sort that out would be a retinoid. So I'd look into incorporating a retinoid and possibly switching out your night cream to one with a high % niacinamide.

The Olay serum does contain a few red flags for me, fragrance and fragrant compounds (which don't seem to be an issue for you but I still warn against them), a few iffy preservatives, and a lot of silicones. Silicones aren't evil by any means but the layering of them may affect how makeup sits atop it all and it will have some occlusive properties which makes it less serum like.
