Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

PS can anyone please confirm the UVA rating for the Frezyderm? (Asking for a friend; can't find it anywhere!).

Pupsiecola · 20/05/2018 14:47

Thanks Bless. I am fine with this product, but the Cerave gentle face wash made my face burn during and after use :-(

BlessYawnBless · 20/05/2018 14:50

Forgot to say I can't believe Amazon selling it for £88 ! I'm sure it was only £15 for a huge pot a couple of years ago. So frustrating that so many good products aren't sold here.

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 15:00

Thanks Olli the diffused heat looks like it would be better for me, or the magenta one maybe.

I'm really miffed about the lack of cerave pm over here atm Angry I've got friends coming from the states in June and am tempted to ask them to bring some - but they're on a multi-stop tour & I won't see them till towards the end so feel a bit cheeky asking them to lug cerave round with them.

Pupsiecola · 20/05/2018 15:01

Yeah. It's not Amazon. It's a third party seller. They will just adjust the price according to demand. I just can't believe anyone would pay that?!

I'm looking to up my Retinol game. Been using LRP Redermic R for about 2 month and am up to every other night. I've just RP'd as want to take things slowly, but when this one is gone I'd like to take it up a notch. LRP is 0.3%. I've tried Paula's Choice and Neostrata but they were too strong.

I've had this one bookmarked for months. Probably from a discussion on here. It's 0.5%. Has anyone tried it? What are others using please?

TIA

Wow! This thread is moving super quickly!

Going way back to Frezyderm tinted SPF - have come to the conclusion that the colour is a bit dark for me but that I could get away with it (I'm pale but normally one up from the palest shade in make-up). Hope that helps people.

Moving on..... someone (JDSTER?) posted a you tube video with a lady with longish blonde hair discussing her experience with Retin-A and side effects (which i think I am now getting Angry). Lady is older than Dr Sam. I thought video was on the last thread but just trawled through the whole thing and can't find it. Does this mean anything to anyone and could you possibly re-post? Thank you Thanks

botemp · 20/05/2018 15:33

Hotandflashy, maybe? Think I posted or mentioned her 5yr Retin-A use video at some point recently.

OP posts:
SophieLion · 20/05/2018 15:45

No it wasn't that one Bo. Lady in the video I'm thinking of was older than that.
But thank you. The hot and flashy videos look interesting and going to have a watch now Thanks

(Skin is flaking slightly. Decided to do a salicylic acid face mask to get rid of flakiness. Am sure derm wouldn't have approved and now my cheekbones are red and stinging - but like sunburn. Blush

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 15:51

Sophie yes I think it's hotandflashy too. I have watched quite a few of hers but didn't save the links but if you google her name plus retin-a or tretinoin they should come up. I like her as she's very realistic about what to expect - ie peeling and flaking and your skin might look a lot worse/older at first.

I tried HA from Skinpep Pupsie and wasn't that impressed (no reaction it just didn't seem to freshen my skin in the way hylamide Subq and Vichy 89 do) but have not tried the retinol.

Ollivander84 · 20/05/2018 15:52

I've gone for fluorescent pink lipstick for work Grin

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 15:54

Sophie I would steer clear of SA if you're using retin A. I can't use SA/BHA in combination with differin (not even attempting to use it with tret) as it makes me dry, peely and flaky, think JDSTER found the same and we both have oily skin.

SophieLion · 20/05/2018 15:55

Thanks too Sallie. I've started watching her 5 year Retin A update.

But in the video I'm thinking of, I think the lady was English - not from the US

Please don't tell me off anyone as I already know I was completely stupid but my cheekbones are looking worse now and can anyone suggest anything that might help? Aloe Vera? I did the mask about 9 hours ago

SophieLion · 20/05/2018 15:56

Cross-post Sallie. Yes I have learnt the lesson that Retin A and SA don't mix.... any tips with what to do now? Thanks

SophieLion · 20/05/2018 15:57

I haven't used SA or anything like that for ages. Not sure what got into me this morning Hmm

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 16:15

I didn't get that bad of a reaction Sophie I just peeled/flaked a lot and it stopped as soon as I ditched the SA. So not sure what to suggest Sad do you have any super mild/gentle unperfumed moisturiser?

Pupsiecola · 20/05/2018 16:57

LRP Cicaplast?

SophieLion · 20/05/2018 17:52

Thank you. I only used SA once this morning. I guess I just have very sensitive skin. The area isn't flaking or peeling (at the moment). Just red.

I tried a very small amount of aloe Vera on a very small part to see and it stung so took it of straight away. Same with the cicaplast. Perhaps best not to put on anything and hope it has calmed down a bit in the morning.

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 18:06

I think maybe best leave it Sophie if everything is stinging Sad I hope it calms down soon.

TantricTwist · 20/05/2018 18:55

pupsie can show a link to the neutrogena facewash your DS use please TIA

JDSTER · 20/05/2018 19:16

Thread is really fast moving these last few days. I kept meaning to post but I’ve been busy.

pupsie an alternative to cerave pm is LRP double repair moisturiser (photo a couple of pages back from me). Contains ceramides, niacinamide and much less in the way of silicones than cerave. DH in USA at the moment and had restocked on the cleanser and moisturiser but said they were last ones in shop Shock. He’s also picked me up an LRP SPF, not available here. Also like the link to neutrogena face wash please. Is it available uk? I use cosrx low ph gel cleanser on my DS at night, just to clear the oil a bit.

Yes sallie/sophie I found BHA and differin made my skin flaky and dry. Interestingly I’m using P50W and differin with no adverse effects, but that may be weather related. LRP toleriane riche is great for dryness/redness due to retinoid use.

sophie I don’t remember the video. I’ve only seen hot and flashy I think.

I was watching Dr Dray the other night (haven’t watched her for a while). She’s given up on differin due to not having active acne and being a bit older (still younger than me) and moved onto tret. It’s what I should be doing really....

miffy2 · 20/05/2018 19:30

Cerave PM is available from iHerb. They ship internationally :)

ie.iherb.com/pr/cerave-pm-facial-moisturizing-lotion-3-fl-oz-89-ml/68562

JDSTER · 20/05/2018 19:59

Dr Dray mentioned that cerave pm has been reformulated recently with more sodium something or other in it, and that people have been complaining it stings on application

SophieLion · 20/05/2018 20:18

I found the video!!! It was two threads ago.
Lady called Nadine Baggott. My Retin A Journey Update. Ring any bells with anyone?

Have attempted to link it.....

miffy2 · 20/05/2018 20:29

I love Nadine's videos.

SophieLion · 20/05/2018 20:33

On a different note and apologies if this has been discussed recently but I've lost track with the make-up as I haven't heard of half the brands of guys talk about (we're a bit behind in Greece!): what primers can you recommend?

I always used Laura Mercier which I liked a lot but can't get it here and DH struggled to find it last time he was in London (admittedly I think he only looked in Heathrow duty free though!).

We have all the main brands (Chanel, YSL, Dior etc), MAC, Smashbox and maybe some more obscure but not entirely sure... thanks Thanks
