Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thanks for the reassurance MrsD, I'll try it out tomorrow as I'm going for an hour long walk.

Enid, I used to love the Armani bronzer they were selling about 15 years ago. It was a taupey shade, no orange in it at all, but it was discontinued. I don't bother with it now because I can't find one that works for me.

EnidButton · 19/05/2018 21:38

Thank you both. I might just try the hoola lite. I think the guerlain one is more pricey. Never worn it before but fancied a bit for summer.

Ollivander84 · 19/05/2018 21:40

Bless - I'm the colour of paper and wore Frezyderm today. Was outside probably 10-4 in and out the sun, rode for around 2hrs. Not a bit of red in sight, really impressed with it

botemp · 19/05/2018 21:52

Enid, I'm still deeply devoted to my Surratt blushes, they last all day on me. I don't own these colours myself but Barbe A Papa and Guimavauve are both cool toned pinks that are really popular with the very pale.

Not a true bronzer but the Chanel Les Beiges powders in a shade (possibly two) darker than your own skin tone give a similar effect of healthy glowiness without the bronzer mudyness.

Thank you bo. I knew there was a blush you loved and was just wracking my brain to remember which it was. I'll look at those too and the Chanel powder. Still don't have any dresses but my face will look good. Cake

EnidButton · 19/05/2018 22:07

That was suppose to be an blushing face Blush but the cake can stay.

EnidButton · 19/05/2018 22:07

A not an. Ffs. 🙄

TantricTwist · 19/05/2018 23:27

enid you should try Chanel Soleil tan

Ollivander84 · 19/05/2018 23:31

I'm eyeing up the peripera lip inks Blush

EnidButton · 20/05/2018 00:46

Tant Think I'd better try a powder first. I'm not totally convinced I'll be able to do bronzer at all but I'm more confident with using powder. It does look really nice though.

EnidButton · 20/05/2018 01:11

Thank you! 😘😍

botemp · 20/05/2018 09:55

Peripera lip tints have a really strong fragrance, Olli. It put me off them but I had really wanted to try the airy velvet ones as the colours are lovely.

Enid, over on Reddit there's a lot of love for the Bare Minerals invisible bronze powder. It comes in shades as well, including one for pale skin and supposedly it's a really close dupe to the Hourglass powders and they're very subtle. I'd think Chanel Soleil le Tan would be too orange for you, it's just on the edge of flattering on me, wouldn't think it would look good on anyone paler.

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 10:43

Enid I've been using the darkest shade from the hourglass palette as a bronzer, it doesn't show that much on me as I'm not pale but it gives a nice healthy glow, it might be more 'bronzey' on you. It's not matte but not shimmery or sparkly either.

I want the hourglass blush and veil powder now, but I'm trying yet again to cut back on makeup spends and I don't desperately need either of them. I'll probably swither for a few weeks and end up buying them anyway Blush

I have issues with blusher too, I can't get it to show up on me at all unless I slather it on which isn't a great day time look - but even then it disappears really quickly. I thought it was my skin tone but seems maybe not....

Oh & I have brow news! Was discussing with my work friend on Friday & she said could see fine, fair brow hairs growing at my 'tails' (she is young with better eyesight than me!). So I used a brow dye yesterday and I do indeed have more hairs than I thought. I don't mind dying as long as I have some hairs there so I'm quite pleased and will keep going with rapidbrow.

BlessYawnBless · 20/05/2018 12:28

I've gone through nearly all of my products and have come up with a routine for Spring/Summer :

AM

Cleanse. Alpha H Balancing Cleanser

Tone. Rosewater spray

Eyes. Boots Simply Sensitive Anti Ageing Eye Gel

Moisturiser. LRP Toleriane Fluide - the discontinued non oily one
SPF. LRP Anthelios Dry Touch SPF 50 or
Dr Denese Daily Defense SPF 30 (under make up)
Testing - Frezyderm SPF50

PM

Cleanse. Boots Essentials Cleansing Lotion followed by Alpha H

Balancing Cleanser

Tone Rosewater

Acids. Paula's Choice BHA Liquid 2% alternated with 2% gel

Eyes. Paula's Choice Resist Anti Ageing Eye Gel

Moisturise LRP Toleriane Ultra alternated with Formula Ultimate Sleep
Cream

Comments - The Boots Super Sensitive Hydrating Eye is more of a light lotion than a gel, no idea why they call it gel. It's cheap but it does the job I need during the day time. It's not too rich and it doesn't affect my eye make up.
SPFs - I've been using the Dr Denese Daily Defense SPF30 for a few years now. It stays matte on me and works under foundation which is what I need for some work days when I'm spending time outdoors with clients.
It's tinted and can look great some days, but other times can turn quite orange on me (recurring problem for me, foundation, blush etc) .
Plus it's not easy to obtain now. I used to work regularly in the U.S and get it delivered to my hotel a few days before I arrived. So I'm saying goodbye to it, I do have a large tube of it to use up.

LRP Dry Touch Gel Creme I would love if it wasn't for the white cast it leaves. I'm pale and you'd think it wouldn't make me any more pale but it does!

Briefly tested Paula's Choice Hydralight SPF30 yesterday. It was a sample size. It made me want to rip my face off. I had a quick look at the PC website and don't see it so perhaps it's discontinued.

Boots Essentials Cleansing Lotion is cheap and effective. It can be removed with a cloth or rinsed off. I've never looked at the ingredients list but it doesn't seem to be an issue for my skin.

Formula Ultimate Sleep Cream is my star product currently. I wake up looking refreshed the morning after using it. It's a lovely light texture too which suits my skin but my dry skinned friend is also a big fan.

Ok so that's it. I've got lots of other things to test over the next few months but this is the routine I'm aiming for until September/October when I'll need to change a couple of products.

I will also add in some sort of retinoid in a few weeks. Probably the Dr Denese one I've been using intermittently for several years and again will need to find a replacement for when it's empty. Firmatone Rx

EnidButton · 20/05/2018 12:43

Thank you all very much for the bronzer advice. I'm going to get the bare minerals one that is in one of the articles Olli linked too and that bo mentioned. It looks very subtle with a slight sheen so good to start off with I think.

Ollivander84 · 20/05/2018 13:31

Here's the blushers I tend to use most
Hourglass ethereal glow
New CID ice pop
BM Rose radiance

Excuse the unicorn pjs!

BlessYawnBless · 20/05/2018 13:35

That's an accurate pic of the Ethereal Glow Olli, I really do love it and hope they never discontinue it.
Definitely recommend it Enid
In the pic the others look as if they'd be a bit too warm for me though.
Thanks for the reassurance about the Frezyderm, I'll be trying it for an hour later.

mintmagnummm · 20/05/2018 13:43

Bless I'm a fair redhead and use frezyderm too, was in garden all afternoon yesterday and no burnt face! I did have burnt flip flop marks tho, why didn't I think to put sun cream on my feet! I use the la Roche posay kids spf 50 on my body, it's really thick and white but does rub in well if you take a bit of time, it's the only one so far that hasn't made me and my son react or burn even in Cyprus in August!

SallieSallow · 20/05/2018 13:57

Hmm I'm wondering if the ethereal glow would do much for me as it looks very pale.

Does anyone who's more of a medium skin tone use it and how do you find it?

I can't use bare minerals powders, there's something in them that makes me itchy. Am ok with other things from the range, it's just the loose powders that do it.

Ollivander84 · 20/05/2018 13:59

Sallie - I would go for one of the other colours, maybe diffused heat

Pupsiecola · 20/05/2018 14:16

My Cerave PM cream is almost finished. It's £88 on Amazon Shock. DH is off to the US next month. Might get him to get me a couple. Where would sell it? Target? He's in NY and won't have much time for hunting it down...

I also meant to say to Bo the Neutrogena face wash you recommended for DSs about a year ago (now both teens) is amazing. We didn't take it skiing and we didn't take it to Rome. And then we also ran out at home. On all three occasions DS1 got spotty within days (DS2 only just 13 and not hit puberty yet). DS1 and I went to Boots to get some more and they didn't have any. He twisted my arm into buying a different face wash from the same brand. Within three days he had several spots so I ordered 3 x the original one online. It's fantastic!

BlessYawnBless · 20/05/2018 14:19

mint yes I'm a redhead too. Or at least I was until the grey came. I colour it to a shade a little lighter than the red of my youth.
LRP used to make a fantastic sunscreen for the face, labelled for kids. Going back around 10 years now, it was great under make up, never looked shiny and didn't have a white cast. It was discontinued and I've never found one as good.
I'd never heard of LRP until I tried it, recommended for me in a French pharmacie when I was on holiday and had a reaction to the one I'd brought with me.
I'll have a look at the kids ones for the body when I go shopping on Tuesday.

BlessYawnBless · 20/05/2018 14:23

Pupsie Target usually have it, most of the big drugstores do, so CVS, Ulta etc. If he's in Manhattan then CVS will probably be the easiest for him to find, depending on his exact location.
I can't use it. Heard so many good things about it but unfortunately it made my face burn as soon as I applied it. Envious because it's a great price and a very good product for those who are able to wear it.
