Is this top really ageing/unflattering?

I always like the look of these Crew rugby shirts. www.crewclothing.co.uk/rugby-top-whe002-whtblu/
They have one in the sale now and I thought I might try it. I'm in my 20s and I know the tops aren't the height of stylishness, but are they really ageing and unflattering ?

Sorry, I wish I was in my 20s, I meant my 30s! Typo

I think they're horrible, sorry. I'm 34 and wouldn't be caught dead in one.

pickledparsnip · 02/04/2018 14:36

However, if you really like them, then sod what people on the internet say!

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2018 14:36

I do think it is a bit old for you if I’m honest. I think a Breton long sleeve t shirt like the Duchess of Cambridge wears is more flattering than a rugby shirt. Boden would have one I suspect. I guess if you want it for sailing though, it’s ok.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 14:39

I just think they look like something simple and "classic" to throw on of a morning...do you mind explaining why they're so awful? I'm always tempted to buy them, but I know they're not popular and I don't want to look a right frump.

LadyGAgain · 02/04/2018 14:42

I think it's because traditionally these type of tops are made of a material that can make the wearer look rather 'boxy' and therefore isn't flattering regardless of your shape.

colditz · 02/04/2018 14:43

No they're horrid, like you've given up on buying your own clothes and just thrown your husband's old school pe kit on

TeaAddict235 · 02/04/2018 14:43

I think that they're quite nice actually. They look very versatile. They're a bit Ralph Lauren preppy aren't they? I'd but them....but not before they drop to less than £30 personally, just 'cos they'd get stained and damaged by the DC.

HuskyMcClusky · 02/04/2018 14:44

I think it’s the button-up crew-neck feature that dates them. They look like something out of a mail-order catalogue (when they were still a thing!).

A stripy cotton long-sleeve t-shirt without the collar or cuffs detail would be better.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 14:45

Yes TeaAddict, I do like preppy things usually, perhaps that is why I'm drawn to them

LanguidLobster · 02/04/2018 14:48

I kind of like them as they look so casual, comfortable and like they'd cover your bottom, so many tops don't. Easy wash too.

I like that they look a bit P.E.!

MySockIsWetAgain · 02/04/2018 14:48

I'd either get:

  1. a Boden breton which is the same as the Tshirt you linked, but without the collar; or
  2. a Lacoste polo shirt with short sleeves and no stripes.

The combo is a bit ageing, yes.

Bastardingcough · 02/04/2018 14:50

Seasalt do a lovely line in Breton stripes and nice "something to throwon in the morning" tops

UnaMagdalena · 02/04/2018 14:52

Awful, it's that older American couple in casual clothing as they tour Europe kind of top.

LiquoricePickle · 02/04/2018 14:53

I love it, but it would make me look boxy. I'm short with an hourglass figure and it would hang and make me look fatter than I am.

If you're slim and small chested I think it would look good.

SnowiestMountain · 02/04/2018 14:54

Ooh no OP, they're the staple item in the wardrobe of my 70 year old aunt!

If you're looking for that sort of thing get to sea salt/Joules/Boden for a Breton!

neveradullmoment99 · 02/04/2018 14:55

Ironically because you are young you will get away with it. I think if you buy it and its a neat fit, you will get away with it. With a pair of skinny jeans an the top undone a little it could make it work and be quite sexy. Its all about how you wear it.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 02/04/2018 14:55

I’d say a Breton top is more aging if anything. They were cool 10 years ago but the type that wears them are now in their 30s/40s and haven’t updated their style in a decade.

My husband was laughing at me for buying some Fila trainers cos he said they were well 90s. Lo and behold, if all the 18 year olds aren’t wearing them round our way. Stuff comes back into fashion and I reckon a rugby top would look pretty stylish these days.

LivBonas · 02/04/2018 14:57

I have loadsss of Breton tops though, I was looking for something a bit differently, but equally "throw-on"...I'll stick to my Breton top though.

Does anyone actually know someone who wears them, or manages to look nice in them? I've only ever seen a 15 year old in one, and she carried it off well. I've not actually seen anyone else in one!

OP posts:
LivBonas · 02/04/2018 14:58

I think the models look good in them (but then, again, I'm no model!) however, I hasten to add I would never wear it with the collar upturned!

Because obviously you wouldn't want to look like an older American🙄 ffs. No idea why this kind of comment is acceptable in Mumsnet.
As for the top, I have a similar one from Next, it's about 20yrs old, I throw it on in a morning as it's cosy. I don't wear it out and about as the body shape doesn't really suit me.

sportyfool · 02/04/2018 15:00

I use to wear tops like that to the yard when I had horses .. it's too equestrian and not in a good way .

mogloveseggs · 02/04/2018 15:00

Late thirties here. I can’t wear them as I’m fat but have a friend who wears them and looks fab!

AnyFucker · 02/04/2018 15:00

That looks like something from C and A

CountFosco · 02/04/2018 15:01

It will depend how large you are as a PP said. You need to be very slim to get away with them I think. I'm a petite size 10 hourglass and I would look like the side of a bus in one. If I was taller but the same size it would be OK.
