Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Is anyone still using the Sisley concealer? I joined this thread (or an earlier incarnation) about a year ago and it was all the rage. TKMaxx had it on offer; I was afraid to buy sight unseen but I was travelling through Manchester airport, tried it in duty free (shade 1( and was so impressed that I called my mum and asked her to buy me a tube the next day (she was also travelling through that airport!)

Anyway I used it for a while then put it away as I was madly in love with Tarte Shape Tape and then Maybelline Age Rewind. I took it out of the drawer earlier this week and have been using it again. I really like it. My eye area looks awake (-ish) all afternoon today and I put it down to the concealer, applied and blended with a light touch this morning.

Anyone still love it?

mintmagnummm · 22/02/2018 19:11

Thanks Sophie, Enid and Sallie Grin your new user name has cheered me up, we should all help with new names for each other lol I could be moaning myrtle 😂

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 19:33
Grin

Sallie Sallow rhymes with a good Doctor Who character name too (Sally Sparrow) It's an excellent choice.

SophieLion · 22/02/2018 19:34

Hello Sallie Smile**
Yes I see what you mean about the other people in there with you. I normally try to pick an off-peak time so I'm alone. I don't like being in the steam room with other people either.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 19:35

Does is wear well miffy? I like Amaxing cosmetics concealer and Laura mercier but neither seem to last very long. Nars creamy concealer is better but I use that mainly as a brightened. I really must try to test the Sisley one this year.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 19:38

possibly there are some wheat derivatives in it?

Missed this earlier bo, I've never thought to check my vitamins! The ones I take regularly that obviously do something are good quality and checked over before buying but the B ones are from a while ago and not amazing. I'll have a look later. Thanks.

Lonesurvivor · 22/02/2018 20:25

Another question (sorryBlush) that I've been wondering about to myself recently.
I'm using Hylamid sub q as a serum now, considering trying TO Buffet as I'm getting on well with their products but if I'm using vitamin C, Hylauronic acid, niacinamide, argireline, retinol and glycolic acid,
Mixing/matching and alternating as necessary if I add in Matrixyl would I actually need a serum. What extra would it bring to the party or is there anything from what I have I could drop in place of serum?
I'm not sure I'll bother with argireline after I use this lot, but I like the other steps so would like to keep them or use a serum that would be as effective.

yongnian · 22/02/2018 21:14

Sorry to hear about illnesses....Flowers
sophie perhaps try applying a layer of oil before you steam? And yes, I would certainly whack on a layer of something asap to prevent further moisture loss....
bo good point...she did show me a caramel type tone too which I suppose could be construed as more neutral.....
sallie loving the name change!

bananafish81 · 22/02/2018 21:14

Re blotting sheets -I love Kleenex blotting papers, they soak up the oil really well, in a very disgusting but satisfying way!

bananafish81 · 22/02/2018 21:16

(They're like the Clean and Clear ones but easier to get in the UK - I used to stockpile the clean and clear ones when I was in the US. Kind of plastic-y and go transparent when they soak up the oil)

Pupsiecola · 22/02/2018 22:15

Enid my friend's daughter (16) has had ME for 2 years. My friend was on the local BBC radio station yesterday talking about it. She has been working hard to raise awareness. She has arranged a film viewing of Unrest in a local theatre which I'm going to. Have you heard of the film?

Flowers for you Enid.

SallieSallow · 22/02/2018 22:16

Sorry JDSTER I'm having trouble recognising myself to be honest but I do like the name, we'll get used to it I'm sure Grin

I have used Kleenex blotting papers in the past Bananafish but can't seem to find them anymore. Clean and Clear are on Amazon.

Lone are you using all those products? As it seems like a lot and actually sounds just like me when I first discovered The Ordinary! What is your routine/when do you use them and how is your skin coping as sounds like you could be overloading a bit. The blurb about Buffet on the Deciem website says 'For a stronger effort against signs of age, our brand Hylamide offers a next-generation formula, SubQ Anti-Age' so if you're already using hylamide there wouldn't be any point adding Buffet.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 22:53

Pupsie I read something about it a while back but didn't know it was finished. Say thank you to your friend from me. We need people fighting our corner. Very sorry her girl has it. Terrible age to be ill. All ages terrible obviously but when you're young and supposed to be out having fun with your friends. Sad Poor lass. Flowers Thank you.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 22:54

I didn't know Kleenex did blotto g papers. Where would I find them? With the tissues or the make up?

bananafish81 · 22/02/2018 23:09

Argh they've been discontinued!! I had a stockpile so haven't looked to buy any for ages. They're going for ££££ on eBay! Angry

Pupsiecola · 22/02/2018 23:35

She's not been at school for 2 years and should be doing her GCSEs this year Enid. She was in the gifted and talented stream and was expected to get top grades. She is going to do one GCSE in English Language I think. The school haven't been very supportive because my friend, who has done so much research, wasn't prepared to go down the graded exercise route as it's been debunked (PACE trial). In fact the school have been quite shocking about it. Which adds to the stress of course.

I'm sorry you're suffering too x

yongnian · 23/02/2018 08:41

A question for the K-beauty aficionados- dr Jart...? Specifically the ceramidin range and the cicapair stuff...any reviews?....any recommended sites with reasonable uk/European delivery...?
I have a gap in my skincare stable looming...LRP cicaplast B5 is nearly finished and whisper it I didn't like it much.
Plus I am ever on the lookout for champions in the battle against moisture loss so am thinking the ceramidin could be the ticket.
Thoughts?

SophieLion · 23/02/2018 09:54

Thanks Yong. I'm not sure though if putting oil on and then opening the pores through steam would be a good combination...🤔
but for sure, I think applying serum/moisturiser asap is key.

Anyway not ventured into steam room since!

I can't help you with your questions but can you explain why you didn't like the Cicaplast B5? Did you just feel that it didn't do anything for you?

botemp · 23/02/2018 11:32

I should probably name change to Dolly Denial, as I do get what's going on Enid, currently heavily deluding myself that my CFS is not rearing its ugly head again (I'm lucky that's it's not as bad for most and normally easily managed with consistent non-strenuous exercise, diet probably helps too but that's more PCOS geared). I blamed it on the long days walking in Paris the first week, then time of the month, then general February fatigue but I'm quickly running out of things to blame. It does seem to be clearing somewhat as of yesterday, so maybe I'm lucky and my denial isn't actually denial.

Sophie, heat dilates the pores so sweat (moisture) and natural oils to the skin can move easily, hence why the advice is for tepid water rather than hot when washing. During a steam you're basically getting a mass exodus of your natural oils and moisture which can be nice for some but you have to have the skin resilience to replenish it. Slapping on a facial oil before sort of delays that effect as those oils will go first. Generally steaming isn't advised for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin because of the depleting effects.

JDSTER, I'm tempted to include Sallie in our next thread title but she sounds a bit of a sad character from a children's book, like, Sallie Sallow Has No Friends and everyone calls her Sallie Swallows (sorry, Sallie formerly known as user, I'm sure you've got plenty and er... let's not speculate on the latter).

miffy, YES! Still madly in love with the Sisley concealer, I just keep quiet because it caused such mass buying hysteria last time and I worry I'll overhype it and people will come out disappointed with a really expensive product. It's that rested look that I love about it, most concealers can age me a bit, not initially but as the day wears on, setting with powder only makes it worse for whatever reason but this one does the opposite, Sisley plus a pinkish cream blush and minimal mascara and a clear lip balm and I end up looking a bit too young. Though it is over a year old now and has seemed to oxidise a bit, but it's nearly done and will RP but probably check the shades just in case I've changed colour instead.

Lone, keep reading and you'll find your answer, but in case you want one now, going by what's listed you're probably using way more products than you realistically need. Buffet is just a 'nice' hydrating serum with some peptides with limited research behind them, so it's basically just a hydrating serum but a lot of the other serums you're currently using also have HA in it so you're probably already covered on that front.

yong will look up pics in a bit as they're on my phone, you could look into cinnamon swirl/tortoiseshell hair colouring (I think that's what they called it). It's a very subtle gradation that makes the transition less harsh from dark to lighter ashier tones, usually with a bit of warmth in it too but it's not the overall tint.

Dr. Jart probably cheapest from Jolse if you're just buying the one thing or RoseRoseShop on ebay (but they're called something different, ruby something). I've never used it because it has fragrance, I think Bagel did manage to get some samples from eBay. I also noticed last night (was reordering some French Pharm bits) Bioderma has a liquid in their Cicabio lineup, which reminded me of Dr. Jart, and I'm now left wondering if that's the Dr. Jart inspiration for their product as they copy a lot of French Pharm products in Korea as they're so expensive there.

Bo and sallie
Thanks for the replies. I don't plan on using both Buffett and Sub q, rather had planned on replacing sub q with Buffett when it's gone and then started wondering did I even need to.
I'm definitely going to drop the argireline when it's gone.
My current routine is
Am cleanse with hot cloth cleanser, gentle toning wipe (when I remember) hylauronic acid on damp face, argireline, vitamin C serum (either sub q or nip and fab) moisturiser if I feel I need it which is rarely and biore essences spf. Oh and eye cream.

P.m. double cleanse with alpha H cleanser and Eve lom. Eye cream Once a week I'm using alpha H liquid gold will build that up to twice. That's it for that day.
The other days I alternate with indeed retinol, (I'm moving on to a stronger one when it's gone as I've built up tolerance over 6 months) and To glycolic acid.
I use argireline hylauronic acid serum and oil/moisturiser every night and niacinamide a few times a week, I find this too strong for me for every day.

My skin concerns are anti aging, I've pretty good skin with no concerns aside from fine lines and uneven skin tone that's crept in since I turned 40 five years ago.
I "listen" to my skin and if it's not feeling right I cut back for a week then introduce everything back slowly.
My skin is much smoother since starting and lines less noticeable. My skin tone has really started to improve, I'm back to where I was a few years ago and could go out without foundation and not scare peopleGrin

I'm just not sure what using a serum is doing for me now I've added in so much extra yet I've used serum for so long it's hard to think about stopping!

mintmagnummm · 23/02/2018 12:59

Sallie I used the fab cream last night and first impressions were good. Lovely texture, lovely smell (I love medicinal smells) and absorbed nicely leaving my skin feeling comfortable. Now only time will tell.....

miffy2 · 23/02/2018 13:49

yong I am in the 'love Ceramidin' camp. I bought a tube on ebay a few months ago It looks like putty when it comes out of the tube but it is a gorgeous day cream (if you are tolerant to fragrance) and I find myself reaching for it more and more even though I am trying to use up a tube of Dermalogica. My skin is age 48 and falls into the normal to dry range (used to be hyper sensitive but good skincare changed that...as did the years passing, I reckon).

I have not tried any other items from the Ceramidin range although I have a water drop cream from the same brand, bought in Sephora in Portugal last summer. Light cream, goes well over HA and I will use the rest in the summer months.
