Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Just posted this on the old thread by mistake - please ignore the other post.

Sallie and Mint - I think I’ve got a bit lost somewhere. Is the FAB cream you’re talking about the FAB ultra repair moisturiser?

Thanks Bo - like Yong suggested, it seems putting oil on my face is the way forward if I go into the steam room. Normally go only once or twice a year when skiing. Does the steam and opening of pores/loss of natural oils also apply to those steam facials (for cleaning and extractions) or is the temperature lower? Not had one myself as I don’t really need but curious.....

Now, can anyone please help me with my acid toner “problem”. Very stupidly I was seduced by CH and other threads and online sites that daily acid toning was the way forward. Blush Please don’t tell me off! I realize the error of my ways. I’m now trying to minimize my financial loss as well as treat my skin in a respectful way. Currently I own:

  1. FAB radiance pads. - these are supposedly gentle acid toners. Lactic and glycolic acid (I can’t find out %). Got about 30 pads left out of 60.
  1. Pixi Glow - 5% glycolic acid, no alcohol. Almost new.
  1. Alpha H Liquid Gold - 5% glycolic acid with alcohol. It’s a pretty full bottle. I really dont understand how Pixi and LG can have the same % as they feel completely different when I use them. Is it to do with the pH of Pixi? I saw you had written something Botemp about the pH of Pixi being high (near pH4) and so this means it is only a mild exfoliator. Perhaps LG has a lower pH and therefore a stronger action on the skin?
  1. I also own (and have used for years) Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant Mask - lactic and salicylic acid (contains cetearyl alcohol).

I appreciate one of the Biologique Recherche P50 lotions is recommended here but I really cannot dump all mine and buy this one now.

So I need advice as to how to build the acids I own into my routine (if possible - or else I will have to start giving away more products.....!) and how often. Just to remind you:

  • I don’t have an acne problem but do get spots which I suspect are from MOs in products.
  • I also want to tackle aging (who doesn’t?! Grin)
  • want to get rid of the red marks left behind from the spots -this is an important one for me.
  • tackle dehydration (and fine lines cause by dehydration).

I am about to start using Vichy HA and I have some vit C serum 10% from Castalia which I will use up before choosing a different one.

Thank you Flowers

mintmagnummm · 23/02/2018 16:08

Sophie yes that's the one, FAB ultra repair cream.

mintmagnummm · 23/02/2018 16:09

I can't help you with the acids as I'm very new to it and only use a bha 1-2x a week but someone else will be able to help you soon I'm sure

JDSTER · 23/02/2018 16:30

Sallie swallows HmmGrin

miffy/Bo don’t mention the Sisley concealer. I bought it on the back of hype around it and price in TK max but colour not quite right for me (should’ve got the lightest one I think). Expensive mistake indeed but I’ve made many of those! Bo I can send it to you if you’d like?

Sallie any of those acids you like or particularly dislike? If you really dislike any of them or they just don’t work for you, you could just cut your losses and move on and use up the ones that are ok, using a couple of times a week?

SallieSallow · 23/02/2018 17:51

Sallie Swallows Grin Grin Grin maybe I should have gone for that as the new user name Hmm

JDSTER think you meant Sophie with the acids Smile
Personally I think you only need one, or one at a time anyway, especially if you use retinol/retinoid as well, I can't remember if you do Sophie though I think not? I don't know much about glycolic acid, I didn't get on with Alpha h liquid gold (tried years ago) it seemed to make my skin worse so I've never tried another one, it's been just BHA/salicylic acid for me recently, used every second night. I use the Paula's choice 2%, before that I had a TO one but that was more of a spot treatment than a toner, and it felt a bit sticky.

And yes, it's the FAB ultra repair moisturiser we are talking about, glad you like it Mint, it can be used as a hand/body cream too so at least you know you can use it up if your face reacts.

I hope you start to feel better soon Bo Flowers

JDSTER · 23/02/2018 17:54

Yes I did mean Sophie Smile

SallieSallow · 23/02/2018 18:01

Lone What is the toning wipe you use? Is it AHA/BHA? I'd be inclined to ditch that as well as the argireline as it seems like you have quite a lot going on in terms of products already. I'd stick with hylamide sub q over buffet as long as you can afford it, as Deciem themselves admit it's a superior product.

Quite a few here have had issues with niacinamide, I didn't (I but stopped using as didn't find it did anything) are you getting spots or a reaction from it? If so, I'd ditch that too.

Lonesurvivor · 23/02/2018 18:47

SallieSallow thanks for your insight re the niacinamide. I feel it tingles on my skin, not like Vitamin C or glycolic acid does though, it seems to last and almost feel like it's on my nerve endings. Its not sore though it's like my skin is energised, does that sound mad? I'm ok if I use it every 4/5 days any more frequent and that feeling lasts through the next day and there can be dabs of redness which go quickly enough.
I think you're right I'll drop that too. I'm almost at the end of the toner pads they're FAB, can't see the ingredients. I'm just using them up and had been considering a spritz toner, for what I really don't knowConfusedWink
The sub q is expensive again compared to when I introduced vitamin C and retinol I haven't noticed much from it so when it's gone I'll do without as a little test!

mintmagnummm · 23/02/2018 19:23

After doing my acid, the skin on my forehead mainly looks taut and shiny is this normal?

yongnian · 23/02/2018 20:51

bo yes those are very nice tones...much warmer...hmmm...thinks....
Love Bioderma anyway and have often looked at their cicabio range...will wait til France at Easter then...
sophie I'd previously used another cica cream which I really liked and did seem to do some healing good...but honestly the LRP one seemed to do zilch except leave a white cast. I did quite the texture and I do love many LRP products, plus this one is regularly beloved on here but...not for me...
miffy ah that sounds like what I hoped for from the ceramidin, I do need a good occlusive.
In other news, I expect my most frequently used skincare product to be calamine lotion in the next 24hours. Half of my youngest daughters class have got and she was off colour today...kept her home today and lo and behold she is now feeling poorly with one proper blister on her forehead and another below the surface on her cheek...she had it a couple of years ago so hoping it won't go nuclear..fingers crossed...poor little thing...weekend plans cancelled, can feel a consolatory bout of online shopping coming on....!!

EnidButton · 23/02/2018 23:04

I've never used the Cicaplast as a Cream all over. Just on red marks left by spots. But greasy for all over I think. Although it's good on my peely nose.

Hope it passes soon bo. Brew

Pupsie Never even thought of school! Poor girl. Really feel for teens who get it. Especially with all the misinformation and things attached to it. Really hope she improves soon.

Quick post. My skin is annoyed with a patch of small spots to side of chin/lower lip and a bigger spot on top lip. Odd places so blaming the quick face razor I did a few days ago without proper prep and the B vitamin. Zineryt is in use again and ordered a fresh prescription.

I got a sample of Marks and Spencer's Formula Absolue time capsules (think that's the name) today. Got three little capsules of serum, used one tonight under LRP toleriane fluid. Then realised they're for day which would explain the super smooth feel of it. Not washing my face again though so we'll see in the morning. Expecting nothing from them but nice to try something new for free. Interesting to see how it sits under make up. Can get 2 uses out of one cap.

I have poured boiling water on my wrist and it's on fire 🔥 Don't think it'll blister after all the cold water but damn it's annoying.

EnidButton · 23/02/2018 23:05

Yong I hope your girl is ok. Think you missed out what she's got. Hopefully it'll pass soon. Cake

EnidButton · 23/02/2018 23:10

bo there's a bit on French beauty in Red mag this month. Called Parisian Chic. Reminded me of you. Grin Haven't read it yet. Quick glance it's the usual, they're so effortlessly fabulous and then lots about all the things (effort!) they do to achieve it.

"It's about showing off who you already are, rather than trying to make yourself better."

Quite like that. Although I think we all aim for 'better' surely. It's more the working with what you have rather than against it and enhancing instead of covering up that I associate with the French beauty philosophy.

Tantpoke · 24/02/2018 01:25

Well it would appear that my skin is enjoying these antibiotics even if my gums aren't yet. ouch Hmm

Re acids I have tried LG which I quite liked, Pixi which I also quite liked but my skin prefers PC 2% salicylic I think.

My very first foray into acid was Clearasil pads followed by lrp effeclar duo when my skin was horrendous a couple of years ago or so (mainly I suspect when I was naively using wipes to remove make up like so many of us back then pre CH)

The last few days whilst stuck in bed my skin care routine has been nice and simple - LRP micellar water (new purchase) followed by LRP thermal water then NIOD copper then NIOD MMHC then LRP toleraine topped up with the odd spray of thermal water now and again when I'm feeling hot and bothered.

enid I look rough af. Like I live off Big Macs and smack. Grin I hope you feel better now.

Sophie back away from the steam room, all those festering bacteria from other people can't be healthy.

Tantpoke · 24/02/2018 01:34

user / salliesallow great new name

pupsie that's so sad re the school being so crap with your friends daughter

yong chickenpox?

enid its the vitamin B !!!! I'm sure of it. My skin looked like a dogs dinner last week or so and I'd taken vit B fizzy capsules 2 days in a row.

SophieLion · 24/02/2018 07:27

JDSTER - the problem is that I’ve barely used the LG or the Pixi Glow so not sure if they work for me or not. Perhaps 3 times the LG and once or twice the Pixi. Plus I feel I’m paying much more attention to my skin now since joining this thread so feel am now in a better position to assess positive or negative effects. I always got on well with the Dermalogica salicylic acid mask and the FAB radiance pads are very light (I think). Did not have any issue with them.

No Sallie I’m not using a retinol at the moment. I have TO retinoid 2% in squalane but not planning to start that for another couple of weeks. I’m know you’re right that I only need one toner. I was just very silly, not thinking and a bit over-enthusiastic.

I’ve never had a shiny/taut forehead after doing an acid, Mint. No idea if it’s normal or not.....

Thanks for the feedback on the Cicaplast Yong. Like Enid I have only been using it on red patches. I’m not sure it’s a good consistency for all over the face. Hope your daughter feels better soon Flowers

Oh Enid, your wrist sounds very painful. Poor you.

Tant - don’t know whether to laugh or cry at “festering bacteria” in the steam room!!!! I never thought of that. Surely they keep these things clean?!! Anyway it’s only something Ι do once or twice a year when we’re skiing so can easily give it a miss.

So with the acid toners, perhaps I will try Pixi or FAB 3 times a week. And then LG an Salicylic mask once every couple of weeks (alternating). Do you think that would be ok? Really just trying to use up the products and waste as little money as possible.

Am intrigued by the Sisley concealer.....but not rushing out to buy it GrinWink

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2018 08:33

Mint I've had a tight shiny forehead from acid overuse Blush.

Miffy your skin sounds like mine too!I think we may be twins, except you're a few months that younger than me.

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2018 08:35

Sophie I was using a Nia serum which I added to my night cream but it was too much for me. I know use products with Nia in, and not every day and it suits me better.

Dr Sam really likes the Elta MD PM Therapy and that suits me.

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2018 08:37

Sorry for the triple post. Catching up.

I use the acids I've stopped using on my face on my hands and feet, before bed, before putting hand cream on.

MrsDOnofrio · 24/02/2018 08:42

Hello

I came to these threads on the back of the Parisian style discussions and have been educating myself slowly. I started part way through the last thread and have read the information sheets at the top and I am working my way through the previous threads; currently on number 4.

Until a couple of weeks ago I was a soap and Nivea user (yes, I know, sorry!). I have implemented Bo’s regime, cleansing, tepid water, serum and moisturiser (not Nivea). I have always been pretty good with spf so no issues implementing that one. I have been reading about all the actives etc and have a potential routine but would like to ask all of you for some guidance as a beginner as to whether I’m heading in the right direction, especially as I have a couple of skin concerns to address. Is the questionnaire from the earlier threads still being used? Would it be OK for me to use that or shall I just list the products I’m considering purchasing?

Many thanks.

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2018 08:49

Which Ceramidin product are folks talking about? I'm not up for a purchase just yet, but I won't repurchase my LRP Double Repair Moisturiser.i still love the Corsx but it's not enough for this time of year (was fine when I was using the DE tester sized HA.

So I'm on the look out for a winter/spring day moisturiser for about a month's time. The Ceramidin one looks good but I'm not sure if you're talking about that or something else (am on phone and struggling to find the old messages).

yongnian · 24/02/2018 09:05

pupsie I was asking about dr Jart ceramidin range, which is what people are responding to.
sophie I wasn't talking about whole face use - I have lots of scars/hyperpigmentation and it was still leaving a white cast.
tant yes, thank you for supplying the missing vital word chickenpox! And are you saying the a/bs are clearing your skin? Interesting. Hope gums respond similarly soon..
enid ouch - do you have any decent lavender essential oil? Great on burns.
I have woken up feeling a bit shingles-ish...(had pretty badly in twenties and flares up on occasion) so apologies for any missing vital information/general crap standard of posting.....
Welcome those from French thread and elsewhere, keep meaning to head over to that thread at some point....possibly not in current state...

mintmagnummm · 24/02/2018 09:20

Pupsie overusage?! 🤔 I only used it 1x this week 😬. Now what?! Bo I need you 😜

Pupsiecola · 24/02/2018 09:25

Thanks yong. I gathered that: I wondered which specific product in the range people were considering.

botemp · 24/02/2018 11:17

Lone, the improved smoothness is most likely due to the high acid use in your routine, I'm generally not a fan for prolonged periods of time but it's up to you if you wish to continue in that way and I'd definitely caution about even more acid use. There are a few order issues in your routine (rendering some actives useless) but I'm not exactly sure you've written it in order.

Sophie, do you have KP or otherwise rough patches, ingrown hairs, or similar issues on your body? The body can handle a lot more in terms of acid percentages so it's always a good place to use up products that aren't working out for you on the face. It sort of depends where you want to head next, if you're in need of one strong acid to be used occasionally then I'd see how you get on with LG, if you're unsure then continue cautiously with the pads.

WRT acid percentages and pH, it's a science calculation basically, but the lower the pH the more 'free' acids are available, so you really need to know strength and pH to make an estimated guess but your own skin pH plays into it a bit too (acne prone tends to run higher and sensitive skin can be slightly more acidic). More info on the calculations here.

See I feel really bad now knowing you've ended up with an expensive dud, JDSTER Sad Don't know if I'd feel right profiteering from that too. Though now we're on the subject of TKMaxx bargains and Sisley, my TKMaxx had loads of Kevyn Aucoin bits marked down really heavily, the base and sculpting powders were all for darker skin tones, the one cream blush was manhandled and a lipstick that didn't feel like my colour... but I ended up picking up The Soft Buff Brush for EUR 9,99, originally 60. It's amazingly good, I've never had a buffer brush that I liked before so never really 'got' them but this one works better than a beauty blender, it virtually looks like I'm not wearing makeup at all even up close, it's a dream pairing with the Sisley concealer but it's also excellent for cream blush and powders. I ran back the next day to get another one as there still was one when I bought it, thankfully still there and also there was a tiny sculpting brush that had really good reviews online for 4,99, haven't tried that one yet though.

Sallie, I'm sure Sallie Sallow would be a great children's book character. She'd bare her teeth at her bullies and tell them 'I'll show you!' and run off to join the circus where she becomes a master sword swallower. Whilst there she befriends the grumpy lion that normally only 'tolerates' the presence of anyone else. Every Friday she'll dermaplane his face with her sword and be the envy of her former tormentors.

Note to self: there is no market for skincare themed children's books.

Lone, WRT TO Niacinamide, we've had very mixed reactions to it. A recent amendment to TO site has explained that to me (and why I won't be reccing any of TO products anymore), they will source different base ingredients for their formulations to keep the cost down which means the formula is never guaranteed to be the same as the last batch. More info on it in the end of this , sorry it's one of those annoying 'tea spilling' channels but aside from the intro music it's not that obnoxious and a pretty good overview of the issues surrounding the company at the moment. Racked has also published a new piece covering the exodus of the CEO and CFO due to firings and resignations.

mint, BHA dissolves oils so it can feel a little taut immediately after. Is it like that for a long time after or just briefly?

I don't know Enid, I don't really aim for better (except where it concerns my health), just best of me but I think a part of that is that I have perfectionist tendencies and know that actually achieving perfection is really boring and somewhat removed from 'human' in a sense, you lose a lot in the process. I think Parisians are quite black and white with what they like, which can be perceived as unapologetically snobbish, quite decisive in a way. They tend to present themselves very much as 'this is what I like', it's taste rather than vanity in a sense. If it's an interesting read will you snap some pics?

Welcome, MrsD! I've suspended the forms as they were making me into a not so friendly person at the rate they were coming in. Just post your plan of attack, timescales, skin issues, etc.

Pupsie the Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream is usually the Ceramidin product but it's better for compromised skin/very dry. The liquid version is liked by acne/oily skin with compromised skin barriers.
