Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Can anyone explain what resveratol is? I’m getting very confused as to what it does in addition to vitamin C. I saw Botemp and JDSTER use it.

miffy2 · 21/02/2018 16:40

Pupsie yes I think we could be hair twins! I remember years ago when I had long hair and I would go to a salon for highlights - they always had to open another round of the plastic packages for my hair - there is a lot of it!

user my stylist goes in with the thinning scissors after my hair has been dried so it is less dramatic of a cut, just helps my hair to sit better especially when I dry it myself.

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 18:20

Thank you everyone for the fake tan suggestions, Bo I'll check the instructions and do some research on the hylamide one, lord knows why I even bought it, guessing it must have been on offer at boots when they still sold it. But as I have it, might be worth a try and I can chuck if there's any adverse effects or it goes patchy with actives - or if it stinks as self tan seems to whiff really badly on me.

I'll look into the body ones, I've tried gradual self tanners before and as mentioned above they all smell absolutely awful on me as they develop, I think they react with my body chemistry or something as others who use them say they don't smell at all on them. So for that reason I'm more interested in the wash off ones, I won't be buying for a while as I'm in austerity measures so have some time to investigate the ones recommended.

Mint I got the FAB ultra repair when I started using differin as it was recommended as being good for the peeling/flaking skin that differin and retinol/retinoids can cause. I don't find it too greasy or heavy at all, I use it in the daytime under makeup sometimes too if my skin is peely/flaky and it's been fine. It feels quite rich going on but absorbs really quickly. It says it's unscented but I think it has a very mild slightly medical smell, not heavily perfumed at all though, these are the ingredients:
Colloidal Oatmeal, Water, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glyceryl Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Cetearyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Allantoin, Sodium Hydroxide, Dimethicone, Xanthum Gum, Disodium EDTA, Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew) Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Butylene Glycol, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Eucalyptus Globulus, Ceramide 3.

Tant your hair is lovely and smooth and shiny, more hair envy here Envy hope you're feeling better soon, especially now you're all dosed up.

Miffy I might ask about the thinning thing for my hair, would probably need to go somewhere a bit more upmarket/modern than my current hairdressers though which is as basic as you can get.

JDSTER · 21/02/2018 18:48

Good to see the updated routines Smile. At work today I wore a tiny bit of powder on my forehead over new NARS tinted moisturiser. No more or less shine than usual. All that time I thought primer and powder were completely indispensable .....

Tant Ive used NIOD photography fluid before but didn’t think it suited my skin so I passed it on to olli. I don’t remember what she thought of it.

sophie yes NIOD HA serum. It’s the only NIOD thing I’ve repurchased. It seems to hydrate well without leaving any sticky or oily residue (I found TO buffet very sticky). TO resveratrol is an antioxidant serum that can be mixed with their Vitamin C serum to supercharge it (a bit of a dupe for skinceuticals serum). It’s got a very runny but oily texture. Like Bo I didn’t/don’t particularly think it’s doing much, I’m just using it up.

mintmagnummm · 21/02/2018 18:50

Thanks user I've ordered the smaller size tube to try as a pm moisturiser (think ingredients have changed slightly though) if I don't like it at least I can use it as a hand cream. It actually says on their website suitable for oily and combination skin too so fingers crossed! I'm loving my eucerin urea cream and will continue to use this in the am but just felt like I wanted a different set of ingredients for the pm. If it's a fail I shall happily go back to eucerin am and pm. I'm definitely in a happy place with my products at the moment and no adverse reactions at all so far even to the bha which has pleasantly surprised me

mintmagnummm · 21/02/2018 18:52

JDSTER does the nars tm contain fragrance? I'm quite liking the itcosmetics cc cream but have to use sparingly otherwise it looks cakey and it's slightly wrong colour so I have to apply a thin layer and blend

SophieLion · 21/02/2018 19:16

By the way, if anyone wants my almost new LRP hydraphase intense serum with HA then let me know. I only used it twice.

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 19:26

Ouch Tant! That sounds terrible. Anti-biotics tend to be pretty quick to work so I hope you feel much better soon.

You have very lovely hair too btw. Love blonde hair.

LRP toleriane fluide users! Does it smell like plastic? My new bottle smells different than usual.

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 19:39

Mint I meant to say that you can get travel sizes, that's what I did first then upgraded to the full size once I knew it suited.

Sophie I can't remember what issues you had with the LRP serum, did it give you spots? I read some reviews that said it was a bit sticky so think it might not be great for me either, the only LRP stuff I seem to get on with is the very wonderful cicaplast range. And I've never tried tolierane so no help to you there Enid

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 19:44

And I can't spell toleriane either Blush

JDSTER that's great news about the powder (or lack of it) how well did your makeup stay on? I'm not so concerned about oil as use blotting papers but I don't want my foundation disappearing.

JDSTER · 21/02/2018 19:50

mint it says oil free, paraben free, synthetic fragrance free and non comedogenic.

Enid sorry meant to say before, no toleriane definitely doesn’t smell like plastic. Hope they haven’t changed formula Shock. Can you take a photo of ingredients if you still have box? I’ll cross check with mine.

JDSTER · 21/02/2018 19:52

user makeup doesn’t look any different now after 12 hours than it normally would. I’m an avid blotting paper user too (as is Dr Sam). What’s your favourite?

SophieLion · 21/02/2018 20:02

Userallusedup- the LRP HA contains paraffinum liquidum which I suspect gives me spots. It might be ok for someone else though. Seems a shame to waste it, that's all.

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 20:33

JDSTER I like these ones
blotting papers
I also have some from Tarte that I like, QVC used to do them as part of a set with their mattifying powder and a brush, but they don't seem to be available anymore.

Which ones do you use?

Sophie I suspect that serum may give me spots too, but hopefully someone else will take you up on your very kind offer Smile

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 20:34

I don't have the box JD and th recycling was collected yesterday. 😩 It was from FeelUnique who are usually reliable.

I do have a ridiculous sense of smell but...

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 20:36

Thank you btw Smile

sazza76 · 21/02/2018 21:17

Hi everyone,
I have just discovered these skincare threads and read the fab info sheets. I'm going to read through all threads but thought I would say hello in the mean time.
I'm in my early 40's and i've had hormonal acne since I was 11. I won't bore you all with everything i've tried. I've been looking into changing my skincare regime completely so I'm very interested to read everyone elses experiences :-)

mintmagnummm · 21/02/2018 21:20

JDSTER does it have coverage or is it very sheer? What's the exact name and where did you get it from? Sorry for lots of questions

JDSTER · 21/02/2018 21:24

Good recycler that you are, I can’t help then Enid. Seems odd that it smells funny.

Those blotting papers look good user. I’ve got loads on the go, in various handbags and at work. Clean and clear ones which are plastic film type from eBay or Amazon are good (thought it might’ve been you who put me onto them). Got a few from Superdrug and Boots which have powder on and papier poudre, which I used to buy from The Body Shop years ago as a shiny teenager! Victoriahealth sell them now- I think I just bought them to make up to £25 and for nostalgia Grin.

JDSTER · 21/02/2018 21:31

No problem mint it’s this one narscosmetics.co.uk/en_GB/pure-radiant-tinted-moisturizer-spf30/999NAC0000004.html?dwvar_999NAC0000004_color=7845023333#start=5
It is as per Dr Sam recommendation. She consistently recommends NARS as a brand. I would normally run a mile at the thought of a ‘radiant’ base, with my oily skin but I now believe my use of ELDW was counterproductive on the oil front, making me oily and clogged pores to boot (my nose looks clearer from two weeks of no ELDW)

Coverage is medium I suppose. Not mega light for a tinted moisturiser i.e it’s not thin when I squeeze it out of the tube. I bought in store in J Lewis. Space NK and various dept stores stock it.

Lonesurvivor · 21/02/2018 21:55

Bo, or anyone in the know
Can I just ask by what you mean by special treatments referred to in the anti aging sheet guide.
I pretty much follow everything else in the regime but aside from swapping The Ordinary glycolic acid for Alpha liquid gold once a week and doing the odd sheet mask I don't do any special treatments. I'd love to hear recommendations on what to use and why:)

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 22:01

I've used the clean and clear ones before JDSTER and do like them, so could have been me that recommended them. I'm not fond of the ones with powder on, as find they leave a bit of noticeable residue on me.

I normally run a mile from anything that mentions 'glow' as glow on me = shiny in a greasy looking way. I'll bear that NARS one in mind for the future though.

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 22:12

Hi Sazza and Lone 👋🏻

JD I asked DH and he said it smells fine. 🤔 Sure it smells different, more chemically. I'll keep using it anyway.

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 22:24

Hello Sazza (sorry missed you up there earlier) if you look back on our last thread (thread 11 linked on Bo's introductory post) there was quite a bit of acne chat towards the end. I'm lucky that I don't suffer with it (oily skin and spots but not acne) but quite a few here have/do.

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 22:26

Lone I think Bo might be referring to sheet masks and similar but I'm not sure, I use a clay mask as a special treatment once every 1-2 weeks but I'm oily/combo.
