Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

userallusedup thanks I was thinking that but decided to ask in case I was missing out on somethingGrin

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 22:51

I use Zineryt for hormonal spots Sazza. It's a prescription only topical anti biotic mixed with zinc. Very effective.

Stupid question coming through 🚨 🚨 🚨 Do hairdressers speak in inches still? So if I say 'take 4 inches off' they'll know what I mean? Just looked at the back of my hair and I'm really shocked with how long it's got. It's ridiculous.

userallusedup · 21/02/2018 23:04

I speak inches to mine Enid but it's a basic rather old fashioned place with an older clientele (think I'm their youngest customer Grin) not sure about a more modern hairdresser. I like my place though as they do exactly what I say, I got fed up with hairdressers who would take 5 inches off when I'd said 2 - maybe they didn't actually understand inches, never thought of that!

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 00:15

I've sometimes got that impression. Maybe I'll just hold my fingers apart instead. Tbh it's obvious where it needs cutting but best to be safe, Grin

botemp · 22/02/2018 12:49

Hmm, yong, just my personal experience, but my hair is a shade or two lighter but also goes a bit reddish in the sun so I also figured it was a safe bet but I didn't like it when I had it and had it quickly removed. It emphasised all the redness in my skin and made me look a bit ill at the same time. I also found certain clothes clashed with it, but I'm neutral so I think that was part of the problem, it turned me into a sallow pink toned person. Ashy tones keep me more in balance without going full yellow banana but there isn't much choice in ashy tones when you're dark haired.

Enid, my Toleriane Ultra Nuit smelt a bit plasticky (slightly plastic diaper/powderish) when I first got it, went away after a few days, maybe it's the packaging or something?

Tant, the 6 month lifespan is from once they are opened. I think the LRP toleriane dermo cleanser is closed with a little safety thingy to ensure a longer shelf life but IIRC there has been at least one person on here who've had their normal sized with a lid dermo cleanser go off quite quickly, suggesting it had maybe been opened in shop or similar. The newer Toleriane hydrating cleanser has a 12 month lifespan once opened. The fluide should be fine as it's in an airless pump and there's probably an expiration date on there.

Sophie, Resveratrol doesn't do anything for Vit C, the Ferulic does amplify the effect but those results are from when it's in the same formulation. They're both antioxidants which in theory are great, the science is out on how effective they really are in commercial skincare formulations (with the exception of hydrous Vit C serums, plenty of research in support of that).

Hurray for less powder! JDSTER, I do wonder if the situation would have been the same before you got heavily into skincare.

Welcome Sazza and Lone. It's been awhile since I wrote that sheet, but I'm guessing it's masks, the 50 Shades pore refining technique, 7 Skin Method, etc.

I have yet to come across a hairdresser that speaks in inches, or cms or mms for that matter. I think it's always best to demonstrate with your hand exactly where you want the length on your body eg where your bra sits, shoulder, ears, whatever. I think speaking in inches only works if you've got long hair and getting a straight blunt cut.

Thanks the explanations Bo and *JDSTER.

I wish I had something more useful to add to these wonderful threads other than questions. Sad

Right now I'm waiting to get home so I can start with my new Vichy HA serum. Quite excited by that!

Spots that I got from my last breakout are more or less gone - just red marks left - apart from one awful under-the-surface one on my chin. It's been a week now. I've not touched it at all but it's still coming out. Now is very red and sticks out. Can't believe how long it's taking to complete its cycle.

And Bo, I read something you wrote about Caroline Hirons in a previous thread and completely agree: she really advocates the use of daily acid toners with very little regard for skin type. I was one of the ones stupidly pulled in by this and now own far too many acid toners for my intended 2/3 times a week use BlushBlush I know you recommend the P50 but I won't be able to move onto that for a very long time.......

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 15:18

My skin is in an awful state. Sad Clogged, full of SFs, blackheads, blotchy. I look rough af. Like I live off Big Macs and smack. Honestly at a loss what to do and it must have something to do with whatever the feck is wrong with me health wise.

I want to give up on everything tbh. It's all so much effort. I can't even maintain nice skin.

🎻

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 15:47

I've ordered the Vichy Clay mask. Think it helped last time. Maybe it's the B complex vitamin I took 2 days ago. Seem to remember getting oily skin and breakouts last time I took one.

I do look ill though. Can't give up because I'm stubborn af.

botemp · 22/02/2018 16:05

Flowers Enid. I didn't realise you were having additional health issues. It may be the Vit B complex, sometimes the filler ingredients are really shite and possibly there are some wheat derivatives in it?

Sophie, don't worry, questions are good, they keep us chatting about skincare.

JDSTER · 22/02/2018 16:24

Flowers Enid. Sorry you’re feeling shit

Bo I didnt quite understand your comment “ I do wonder if the situation would have been the same before you got heavily into skincare.”

sophie your questions are good. Nice to have a new poster who hangs around longer than the answer to one question Smile

botemp · 22/02/2018 16:29

Yeah, that sentence makes no sense Blush I was just wondering if you'd easily have gone without powder and heavy duty foundation all this time or whether there's been a genuine/improvement with your skincare regime that allowed for it.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 22/02/2018 16:29

bo Nothing additional, it's the cfs/ME or whatever it really is. It effects everything and it fluctuates so hard to predict what the day will bring. If that makes sense. I'm better than I was this time last year but it's really hard. Get so sick of struggling against it. Having a sorry for myself day clearly. Blush Thank you though. Some days my skin really shows how ill I am. Black eyes and Sallie etc. Gaaaah.

I've petted the neighbour's cat and I'm doing a bit of light gardening to get outside. Fresh air. Smile I'll have pulled myself together tomorrow.

Take no notice of me. Little Miss Moany pants over here. 🙄Grin

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 16:31

*sallie = sallow. Sallie is not to blame.

JDSTER · 22/02/2018 16:36

Difficult to know of course Bo but I think there’s been an improvement in skin with better skincare but even just ditching heavy makeup over the last couple of weeks has cleared the SFs on my nose to a degree

mintmagnummm · 22/02/2018 16:48

ThanksEnid. My illness has flared up and I've been feeling crap for a while now, I think it may be due to the cold weather making mine worse. Have been taking the maximum dose of my strong painkillers a lot recently too.

SophieLion · 22/02/2018 16:52

Thank you for your kind words, Bo and JDSTER.

Enid - sorry to hear your skin isn’t behaving itself. It’s so frustrating isn’t it? And sorry to here about your general health issues Thanks

SophieLion · 22/02/2018 16:52

And you too Mint Thanks

SophieLion · 22/02/2018 17:02

Btw I went in the steam room here yesterday and the day before which I always think is good for sore muscles and the skin. However, I did notice this time (as paying much more attention to my skin) that my skin felt dry (dehydrated?) afterwards and seems to be asking for more moisture now.

I suppose this is effectively the same as washing my face with hot water rather than tepid?! Or should one come out of a steam room and immediately put on serums/creams before the dryness sets in?

userallusedup · 22/02/2018 18:29

Sorry to hear you are suffering flare ups Enid and Mint Flowers for you both and hope you feel better soon.

I'm Sallie Sallow at the moment too but it's definitely the time of year for me, might test that hylamide glow thing at the weekend.

My Skinpep stuff has arrived, will test the HA serum at the weekend but I seem to be doing ok (so far) with AF Vit c, so will wait a while before trying the Skinpep version.

I can't help with the steam room Sophie I've never been in one, I tried saunas a couple of times many years ago and didn't like them, nothing skin related I just didn't enjoy the experience at all.

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 18:42

Mint I'm sorry to hear that Flowers I'm much improved to what I was so shouldn't complain really.

Thank you Cake

Sophie You're contributing loads! Smile

EnidButton · 22/02/2018 18:43

Grin Sallie Sallow

SophieLion · 22/02/2018 18:48

Ah thanks Enid.
*
User -* I don't like saunas either. They're very different to steam rooms. Very dry heat. I feel like I can't breathe at all in a sauna.

JDSTER · 22/02/2018 18:49

I know we’ve just started a new thread but Sallie Sallow should be up there in the next thread title Grin

userallusedup · 22/02/2018 18:55

It wasn't the heat for me Sophie it was the other people in there, I felt very claustrophobic. Might be ok with a private sauna or steam room Smile

JDSTER by the time we have the next thread we'll be all glowing and full of the joys of spring - well some of us might be, I'll probably still be Sallie Sallow Grin

userallusedup · 22/02/2018 18:56

Oooohhhhh maybe I should change my user name - not sure how to do it but people seem to all the time on here so might have a look.
