Mint Velvet and Hush both have a pair that are ok, but I want something a little edgier.

Hello, this thread is a little old and the links are out of date. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of Mumsnetters' favourite trainers.

OP, I'm confused by those, full stop!
Rip offs at 3x the price of the originals?

c75kp0r · 20/01/2018 08:24

Is it just me or do the matches ones look grubby / marked ? Or is that a thing now like buying jeans that with holes?

I like the white converses but would worry they’d end up looking like the matches ones befor long....

Pistachiois50pmore · 20/01/2018 08:31

I think you have to get trainers from a trainer company not from e.g. Mint Velvet if you're concerned about being cool / not like a Lady Alan Partridge!

Adidas Gazelles / Stan Smiths are a safe bet. Converse Jack Purcells are worth a look too.

megansmandstop · 20/01/2018 08:33

"Rip offs at 3x the price of the originals? "

How can Golden Goose be a rip off converse (canvas, no star..)?..white leather trainers have been done by just about every shoe brand over the last few years, since Phoebe Philo wore white Stan Smiths down the catwalk for Celine. For more stars on trainers pre-converse, see Saint Laurent, Ash, Hush..the USP of Golden Goose is their pre-distressed appearance which will obviously divide opinion at that price.

OP, if you want something edgier (which Mint Velvet and Hush are the antithesis of!) in an affordable price range, how about Vans?

CountFosco · 20/01/2018 08:36

Yes, the grubbiness is Golden Goose's USP. No I don't understand why you'd pay a fortune for trainers that look like grubby converse.

What's your budget? My favourite sports branded trainers are Stan Smiths or Superstars or Puma Suede or Converse. If you want to look at designer trainers then Rogue Matilda (I've got shoes from there and the leather is buttersoft so assume trainers would be very comfortable), Ash (the Hush ones), Air and Grace are on all the blogger's feet. Have a look at the enbrogue blog, she's a sneakerhead and has done a couple of recent posts with cool trainers, she likes Northern Cobbler, Grenson, Veja and others.

megansmandstop · 20/01/2018 08:45

oh yeah CountFosco Veja is a good suggestion for a decent price trainer.

Of course, if you want to be bang up to date, the latest trainer trend is the "dad trainer" ; Balenciaga if you're a total fashionista, or New Balance for the tighter or wallet:

MockneyReject · 20/01/2018 08:54

'Rip offs', as Converse have been doing that style of shoe with the star for decades.
I has some in about 1991, and they were referred to as old school, then.

Agree that sportswear shkps/companies are best for trainers. I generally go for skate brands, as I prefer 'chunkier' shoes. They seem to be well made, comfy and padded. They've been designed and rigorously tested to withstand extreme sports, so they need to be, I guess.

Or

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 09:18

oh loads of replies! lovely.

Just checking out these suggestions with coffee now. I like the gazelles but I fear I'd look like I'd misread the memo on trainers, being over 30 and not understanding how social media works etc. If I can't find anything right, the gazelles in pale pink would be lovely in summer. summer is a long way away put the wallet down

The white leather star converse ones linked by mockneyreject are lovely, really like those ones but they are only available in child sizes on that site. I'll look and see if I can see them somewhere else.

Unfortunately I'm not jumping on any bandwagon with the love of the golden goose trainers on matches, I saw them and thought, 'ah shurr deyr purrfect, i'll get deez wunz'' and my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the price. I just really prefer those to any I've seen. boo.

Count Fosco, budget is about #100. Maybe a more if I fall in love.

Laughing at the Dad trainers!! So with mom jeans and dad trainers I could look as bad as I did in 1989.

Going to check out the other brands now. Never heard of some of these.

Love the addidas superstar runners but I'm feeling like I want a star not a stripe at the moment. Influenced by something, maybe just have done stripes too many times. Addidas lovely though.

Love the air and grace site Nothing there I would order right now but it's a site I like the look of.

from the veja site - these hit close to the spot I like that they're not prison white

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 20/01/2018 09:31

I stand by Gazelles. They're retro but relevant and they look very lovely on a female foot. Loads of colour choices too.

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 09:52

Checked out all of those sites thank you countfusco. I like the grenson trainers. I didn't know that Addidas had brands within their brand, like stan smith. I would have just looked at those and filed them under 'addidas'

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 09:54

cheap I know, I like them too. They really withstand the decades rolling past too, I mean, in a design classic kind of way. Love the new colours. Going to have another look at all of Addidas women's trainers.

holycityzoo · 20/01/2018 10:07

I love trainers. I have
Golden goose (love them!)
Stan smiths (like these)
Red gazelles (don't wear these as much)
Grey vans (new but love them)
Veja white (wear these in summer more)

I'm 40 if that matters. Stay away from converse and superga they scream mum trying to be cool.

holycityzoo · 20/01/2018 10:08

Oh and leopard air and grace love these too!

CountFosco · 20/01/2018 10:10

If you want to waste hours look at the customisation options on the Adidas website. You can have your own unique design if you so desire.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/01/2018 10:11

Is Puma ok? I want some trainers for a hol at Easter with lots of strolling and bars and things and schuh has some nice pastel suede ones in the sale. I haven't got gazelle money, and I like converse but they are too flat. I'm slightly mature fucking old so as much as I'd like to be down with the yoof it's not happening. They have superga too, are they comfy? Know they are much loved on here.

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 10:15

You have a pair of golden goose?! I'm jealous! still hoping I'll see a pair for a third of that price that I like just as much.

I know what you mean, as a mum in her 40s, even though I dress well but simply I think, I wouldn't want to go in to work and have my fashionista vlogged trainers catch the surprised eyes of the 20 somethings! But it isn't very fashion-y where I work.

I have a daughter who'd wear any old thing if it was in fashion, so if she sneers too loudly I'll know I'm scaring her. She'd have to breath in and out of a brown paper bag if I left the house looking too on trend. She'd be more comfortable with Alana Partridge for sure!

She does ALLOW me to pick out clothes and shoes for her though, she grudgingly admits that her mother has a good eye. I couldn't say the same about my own mother.

I've got red Puma Suedes and all the young ones at work love them so I'd say they are definitely OK.

Quite like the look of Gola Harriers as well, or Vans Old Skool. Basically I love a suede retro trainer (only reason I'm not saying Gazelles is because DH always has a pair).
