Mint Velvet and Hush both have a pair that are ok, but I want something a little edgier.

love these but the price confuses me a lot so i won't buy this pair!!!

Hello, this thread is a little old and the links are out of date. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of Mumsnetters' favourite trainers.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said edgy. I'm definitely not after anything frumpy but edgy might be pushing it. Although I want to 'read up', check out some of the blogs etc. Next time who knows.

OP those are nice and a complete bargain! Enjoy Grin.

hettie · 21/01/2018 07:39

As an affirmative to golden goose try crime london. They have a sale on at the moment

CharizMa · 21/01/2018 08:36

Hettie, now you arrive to the thread! I really like those trainers you linked to. I suppose the zip kills them a bit but I like it.

I want to order those ones too. BUT I'm mentally making a note of crime london here. I will be like a new mum suddenly noticing babies everywhere only sub babies for trainers.

Thanks countfosco, for 18 it is hardly a risk. I decided I'll order these for now and see what trend if any appeals to me when spring/summer is closer.

Do the Golden Goose ones really look dirty when they’re new? I think they look truly awful, sorry. My 15 year old daughter wouldn’t be seen dead in them - she’s very fashion conscious and I tend to use her as a barometer of what’s “in”. She is currently wearing black converse, however she’s the only one in her group of friends that is. The rest of them are all into Adidas - anything goes really, gazelles or the more sporty ones.

Puma is also considered a “cool” cheap alternative to some of the more expensive styles. Schuh and ASOS are good places to find cheap, edgy trainers.

latara23 · 21/01/2018 09:03

One of my best friends has a false leg do usually wears trainers; she's always worn Converse because she likes them not because she's trying to be cool.

She's 41 but couldn't look mumsy as she's not a parent..

megansmandstop · 21/01/2018 09:41

MockneyReject yeah I read it, I didn’t realise it was so important to you though, so well done for —Googling— being so knowledgable, You WIN.

It doesn’t change the fact that Converse, and all the styles you linked to, are frumpy as hell and simply not fashionable, let alone edgy. At the moment.

Because, let’s face it, threads like these might be asking for style recommendations but the simple fact is, the brand is just as important. So, yes Golden Goose might be similar, they might be dirty looking, they might be expensive, but it’s the right brand at the moment (actually less and less so if you’re reallly following trends but....) just like Gola as previously mentioned, was passé, is now having a moment, and Gazelles have replaced Stan Smiths as the current Adidas favourite street shoe.

There is no doubt that at some point Converse, Superga, currently derided as mumsy, will be the must wear shoe at fashion week and on street stylists.

Because fashion is all about the emporers new clothes and we all fall for it.

Dad trainers. That is all.

SLRGPW · 21/01/2018 10:09

I’d say Golden Goose are very Mumsy, sorry Blush.

Converse are having another resurgence with younger people, but the high top versions and probably only the black and white ones.

Vans old skool seem to be slowly taking over the ‘it’ trainer crown.

But ultimately shouldn’t we just all wear what we like. I’m sure people cringe at some of the stuff I wear Grin

SLRGPW · 21/01/2018 10:12

Dadsy trainers are definitely New Balance.

Totally agree with SLRGPW.

CountFosco · 21/01/2018 10:54

He says if you wore them the first time they can't be worn again so no gazelles/Stan smiths for me!

And yet you're wearing Nike Airs, did you not wear them last time?

Considering how quickly fashion cycles it's ridiculous to say you can't wear something because you're "too old". What style of jeans should I wear, I've been through 2 cycles of skinnies and 2 cycles of bootlegs in my life so far and I'm not yet 50??? Or should I be wearing a smart brown tweed skirt and twinset and pearls with sensible courts? Fashion is not just for the young.

hettie · 21/01/2018 14:08

Sorry Blush.. Meant alternative obv....I love golden goose but crime London alternatives are nearly as good and less spendy. Neither are 'mumsy' ... Veja or some of the niche Nike also get my vote

MockneyReject · 21/01/2018 14:11

megansmadstrop

I didn't need to Google. I just knew you were wrong - because I'm old and wore them decades before you claimed they came in to existence.
And helping you to understand the difference between leather and canvas, before and after, similar and different, isn't particularly important to me. I just like to share the wisdom of my advanced age. Even with shallow, snarky strangers on the Internet.
You're welcome.

OP asked for something similar to the GG ones, but less extortionate. So, I linked to some. Not sure why that's so important to you.

Flomper · 21/01/2018 14:20

Im quite used to Emperors New Clothes in fashion (eg Supreme) but those Golden Goose trainers are just rank. Anyone that would pay £300+ for trainers that are already bashed up and dirty needs to think hard about whether they are heading into sheep territory imo. Only my opinion though! What do I know?!

I wear Stan Smiths and Vans becasue they're comfortable and I dont want to pay more than 100 quid for trainers i live in and bash up walking round London all day. I dont really care (anymore) whether they are currently fashionable/mumsy/edgy in the silly cycle of things, if I'm honest.

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 21/01/2018 14:26

Ahh this thread is funny. Golden goose are sheep territory (yet you pretty much NEVER see anyone in them IRL) but Stans and vans aren’t. How funny.

Flomper · 22/01/2018 00:31

ah you see my definition of sheep is different. Its not ubiquitousness, its paying a lot if money for something that isnt worth it or is inferior to something similar, but cheaper.

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 22/01/2018 17:15

Flomper sheep means following the crowd, that your easily led/influenced. Which would certainly apply more to stans and vans than to £300 trainers IMO.

rightknockered · 22/01/2018 17:43

The most comfortable trainers and the best looking that I own are Nike Air Max 97's. I have them in rose gold. Highly recommend them, look good with everything.

Swimminguphill · 22/01/2018 17:50

At risk of entering a delicate debate, can I just quietly point out GGs are on sale in net a porter website, only a few sizes left but stock seems to change regularly...

BusterGonad · 22/01/2018 18:14
