Our old thread

Welcome to our new lovely, friendly thread for perfume lovers. All are most welcome to drop in and chat, whether dabbling in scent for the first time or as full-blown fragrance junkies.

Tell us your Scent of the Day, or latest discovery, or ask a question - because one of us is almost bound to know the answer.

carrots Notino is a reputable perfume shop, they definitely won’t be selling knock offs. You do need to be careful on eBay though

This thread is moving very fast indeed. Lots of newbies

SOTD is E Coudray Iris Rose again (the one that smells like a 70s boudoir/ hair salon).

Can someone post link to decent decant bottles please and the kit you need.

I’ve been thinking of the blind sample swap - can we keep it simple please? 3 of our choice but could be themed? It’s just that I have a small collection of full bottles so I’m not going to be able to play if it gets too prescriptive. Although happy to sit out if others want to go first Smile

Sandycarrots · 06/10/2017 09:54

BluebellGal thank you so much for that confirmation; I am just going to have to buy another bottle now Wink. Thank you, it is a really excellent price!

explodingkittens · 06/10/2017 10:26

Fire has arrived! Promising stuff on first sniff. I'll let you know my considered opinion later Wink

Also came with samples of Ghost Dream and YSL Y (is this a reformulation?)

teta · 06/10/2017 10:33

Hi, I've come on here to ask what Greens you all wear in cooler weather? I find my summer staples of floral greens/greens of Cristalle, Fleur du matin, Lentisque and Eau de Campagne are too cold and fresh in cooler weather. The fruity floral greens like Aedes de Venustas or Mito edp work in cooler temperatures as does Wrappings . But can anyone suggest others? I've ordered Aliage and White Jasmin and Moss to try, plus Heure Exquise.
Sotd is Jo Malone's Mimosa & Cardamom plus Basil & Neroli to add a touch of green .

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 11:19

Serge Leutens fille en auigilles or chergui

Hermes EDM

Have a look at these teta

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 11:21

^ thinking of the pine notes in those fragrances, possibly more woody than green though for you

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 13:07

Another newbie delurking with a question, I like your threads and lurk from time to time. First a bit about me. I love fragrance, but it has to be light, I get a severe headache from many "mainstream" fragrances, if I had to generalise, the ones you find in Debenhams, including a lot of the big names. Also have to avoid anything too floral or fruity (apart from citrus).

So, I go for mainly EDTs, citrus, greens, cedar, a little musk, patchouli, a touch of floral but nothing heavy. My collection includes inexpensive Next / Library of Fragrance / Yves Rocher types also After the Rain by Arran Aromatics, Eau Dynamisante, L'occitane Verbena, CKOne Blush, Crabtree and Evelyn Lavender and Verbena, Parfum Prodigieuse (Nuxe) and my current favourite (SOTD) Centrepiece by 4160 Tuesdays.

My question is - I have a rare day in London by myself tomorrow (West End) - where can I go to try a few things I won't find at home where my options are Boots, Debenhams etc? Thank you.

MrsMacNally · 06/10/2017 13:13

Hi Teta - for winter greens I go deep; Yatagan, Magie Noire (and Italian Cypress is lovely too).

SotD is Or Black from a little decant which I suspect is the 2014 version. Spectacular opening - imagine the herbal/menthol rush of a whole mouthful of honey-flavoured Tunes whilst simultaneously taking a breath of freshly sprayed 4711. It only last a couple of minutes though before settling down as an interesting woody/green aromatic with a slightly play-doughy note. Oddly cool yet comforting, but disappears fast on my skin.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 06/10/2017 13:26

Once I haven't been but Les Scenteurs would be my first port of call if I was in the area... Their website is ace, they have a good range, are lovely and those here who have visited in person have given great reviews!

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 13:36

Oncewas in London try Les Senteurs, Liberty, Selfridges, Fenwick- depending on where you are. Call Les Senteurs first because one shop is closing/one being refurbished so need to head to right one. John Lewis also pretty good for less mainstream perfume these days

I know what you mean about headache inducing perfumes. I suffer from migraines so have to be quite careful what I wear. I think that might be the Pink Minger (PM) effect!

MrsMacNally · 06/10/2017 13:37

Once - sure some Londoners will be along shortly with comprehensive advice.

I was down for the Somerset House show and whilst wandering back through Covent Garden, stumbled across Bloom. Very helpful and friendly salesperson who knew his stock, was full of suggestions and happy to make up samples of whatever I was interested in (£3 each I think?). Zoologist, ELdO, Parfumerie Generale might all yield some lighter possibilities? (Plus there is Diptyque and Chanel round the corner).

If you do go, please sniff some Zoologist Elephant and report back!

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 13:43

Also oncewas just wanted to recommend E Coudray perfumes which blend beautiful floral fragrances that are lighter and not headache inducing (A French brand despite my witterings yssterday about my Italian Perfume period). They are also affordable at £65 100ml

MrsMacNally · 06/10/2017 13:46

Sorry to cross-poster with others.

explodingkittens · 06/10/2017 13:56

Definitely Les Senteurs once. You need the one behind Marble Arch (?Seymour St). Then you could head into the big M&S on Oxford Street which should have a good selection in its beauty hall of the lighter, green, cologne-style fragrances.

Much as I could happily live there, if you are prone to perfume-induced migraines, you might want to avoid Liberty - its perfume dept is quite small and cramped. Although full of delights, it's impossible not to get a nose-full of what everyone else is sampling too!

Burlington Arcade has a Chanel shop with all Les Exclusifs I think...you might like Bel Respiro if you're into fresh, light and bright scents

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 14:01

Thank you all, I will get my A-Z out and start planning my route. Maybe avoiding Liberty! Weirdly, as someone susceptible to scent induced headaches I could spend all day in Lush, so you never know, but better not to risk it.

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 14:01

Les Senteurs Seymour street open till end October then shits for good

Elizabeth Street store is shut for refurbishment right now, reopening end of October

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 14:02

Obviously meant “shuts for good”! Grin

BluebellGal · 06/10/2017 14:03

All the suggestions here except Bloom are on or just off Oxford Street, so you could visit them all!

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 14:25

Definitely avoiding that one then Bluebell!

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 14:25

I love the smell of bluebells BTW.

explodingkittens · 06/10/2017 15:03

You'd probably be fine once and Liberty is a perfume-lover's haven after all, but it is a relatively small space.

explodingkittens · 06/10/2017 15:32

So, Fire. I'm not sure. I certainly don't dislike it, but I can't say I love it...yet. The vetiver note (at least I think that's what it is) is coming up quite strongly still and is overpowering everything else.

However, I have a cold which is affecting my sense of smell, earache which is making me extremely irritable, and apparently a habit of finding out that perfumes smell totally different on me on the second wearing than they did on the first! So I will definitely be giving this another go, but right now it's a teeny bit of a disappointment. Blind buy, though, so only for myself to blame Grin

boldlygoingsomewhere · 06/10/2017 15:44

kittens, my bottle of Fire came today and I'm also very underwhelmed by it. I don't hate it but I'm not feeling like it's one I want to wear again.

OnTheSherry · 06/10/2017 15:50

123 posts in already?! Blimey, you bunch of chatterboxes Grin.

SOTD is good old fashioned YSL Paris. A perfume I despised in the 80s/90s, but have come to love.

teta - have you tried 4160T's Ealing Green? Its green grass and a big bunch of fresh herbs in a bottle. It took me quite a few wears to appreciate, but might be a go-er?

If you can manage a floral-green, Balenciaga Florabotanica? I prefer it in hot weather, as its very fresh, verging on minty, but it does smell different in cooler weather - sort of green tea-ish but not as headachey as EA Green Tea.

Badders08 · 06/10/2017 15:54

Hellooooo
