Ps please excuse the terrible spelling/grammar typos! Typing on my phone

Restingwitchface · 05/10/2017 15:32

Hello fragrant mumsnetters. I love your thread! May I ask advice? I'd like to buy some perfume for my 15 year old dd. She's very fashionable and outgoing. Has a bright sunny disposition! Can you recommend anything? Thank you! And thank you for letting me know that you can buy perfumes on eBay! Ibe just bought some diorissimo for me as I remember loving it years ago! (my sotd is keihls original musk BTW!)

boldlygoingsomewhere · 05/10/2017 15:51

Quick question - I'm still training myself to pick out individual notes in a perfume rather than sniff and say 'that's nice'. The soapy, powdery note which appears in a lot of classics - is that rose?

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 16:14

Welcome RWF with a 15yo I'd be tempted to get some samples and go from there. If you can get to a Guerlain counter they will probably have Mon Guerlain and Black Perfecto. Both sweet (MG very) but that is the fashion for the young. You have to chat up the SA to get samples. Or take DD with you and test some stuff on her, have coffee and then see how they smell, remember to set a budget.4160 have lots of fun lively scents and do 9ml sizes. Any idea at all what she likes?

Sandy Blooms box of green samples might be fun for you to explore and will give you an idea of what you like. Much cheaper than a FB.

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 16:20

Pinched this off fragrantica for you Boldly
powdery is caused by for example these notes:
-aldehydes (definitely)
-amber (maybe..?)
-iris
-jasmine
-lily (I'm not sure about this one..)
-musk
-orange blossom
-rose (sometimes)
-sandalwood (probably just enhances it)
-vanilla (same as above)
-violet
and your skin chemistry

Sandycarrots · 05/10/2017 16:39

Thank you very much MrsPestilence - I particularly like the sound of "soft lawn"!

BluebellGal I don't know if there are many, if any, specific Belgian perfume brands (although found this article just now about Dries Van Noten's fragrance by Frédéric Malle

And I came across this link to what appears to be a rather special shop!

Sandycarrots · 05/10/2017 16:40

More information about that particular shop here.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 05/10/2017 16:40

Hello Sandy and Resting, welcome to the slippery, if fragrant, slope.

I'd always say "Iris" if something is soapy, but I'm not very good with notes tbf.

Resting- my dd is 14 just, and a mini perfumista, she loves all the Burberry perfumes and all the L'Occitanes and Chanel Chances.

I'd get the Atelier sample set we all got earlier in the year over the Advent Calendar as the set was such good value (was it 30 euro for about 20 samples?) I have liked all the citrussy copying-Tom-Ford-bergamot-lemon-mandarin-blablabla ones, and not liked at all all the rest (which I've tried) (which admittedly isn't many) The ouds are scrubbers, but then to me, all oud is, and the Iris silver thingy was very aftershavey.

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 16:44

RWF Babe Power gets good reviews is high fashion and a sensible price.

Sandycarrots · 05/10/2017 16:46

Thank you PerfumelsAMessage slippery slope indeed! I've received too many gorgeous recommendations by far Smile

MrsMacNally · 05/10/2017 16:53

Hi RWF. That's a lovely thing to be planning. (As ever Smile) I'm thinking along similar lines to Pest. I'd get some 4160s 9mls representing major perfume groups. For a young extrovert, defo Babylon Sunset, a glorious fruit/floral made for a young woman, then Shazam! - a super-zingy citrus/oriental, and if your budget permits maybe a gourmand (Centrepiece perhaps?), and/or a beautiful floriental like Tart's Knicker Drawer (assuming the name isn't a deal breaker)? If you can run to four you can order as commitment phobia set which is better value. Or they have taster sets. Look at 'gifts, samples and taster sets' on their website.

Or perhaps a Perfume Society box or subscription?

Restingwitchface · 05/10/2017 17:12

How lovely

The 4190 taster set looks perfect. Thank you so much! Going to get one for dd1 Xmas also!

PerfumeIsAMessage · 05/10/2017 17:54

I am now in Tweed! (so boo sucks to the old lady haterz) Grin

It's not as fabulous as Panache- Panache is sharper and the aldehydes make it just my thing...but it's lovely nevertheless...there's a bit of a poo smell at times Grin which I thought must be jasmine, but a quick google tells me there's ylang-ylang as well which I always find a bit, erm, fetid. In a nice way though!

Tomorrow it's going to have to be Blue Grass isn't it?

boldlygoingsomewhere · 05/10/2017 18:24

Thanks for the list, Pest. I think it's probably the aldehydes then in Miss Dior. It will be interesting to compare it to another aldehydic perfume.

PIAM, great to see someone else who likes Panache. It was great to get a vintage version to put on and it smells so lovely. I remember my mum always smelt gorgeous in it.
It lingers on my skin for such a long time which is in contrast to most perfumes which disappear very quickly on me!

OnTheSherry · 05/10/2017 18:37

Coo-ey, all.

Thanks for the new thread Greeny.

SOTD was Al-Haramain Amira Gold. I'm experimenting with some Arabian oils I have in my collection (due to not being able to make any new purchases for a bit).

This one is very odd for about the first half hour. It honestly smells like chlorine Shock. But it develops into a lovely honey-orange-Oud, and its a nice change to wear an oil - I find they develop more gradually than EDP/EDT.

I used up the last of my sample of Midnight in the Palace Garden last night at bedtime and am feeling bereft Sad.

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 18:51

Boldly plus the rose, amber, sandalwood and iris Grin I think it is generally a handful of things in combination that give things a powdery smell.

PIAM go for it, Blue Grass rocks.

I had forgotten that 4160 did the pre-chosen taster sets. My first lot was an rather eclectic selection.

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 05/10/2017 18:54

Sandycarrots, another Eau de Campagne lover here. I have just looked it up on ebay and nearly fainted - three years ago I bought my mum an EDT and shower gel set in the sales for c.£25 - the same one's on there for over £100!

Cassis en Feuille is a good shout, though it's quite a lot sweeter IMO. The other two that I'd try are both Diptyque - L'Ombre dans l'Eau and Eau de Lierre. And maybe also Miller Harris Terre de Bois, which is another very green one.

GreenPolishToGo · 05/10/2017 18:55

Hello Witch fabulous username. My DD is 19 and is very fond of these 4160 Tuesdays scents: What I Did On My Holidays; Mrs Gloss Made Me Do It; Mrs Gloss Lemon Sherbert; Silk, Lace & Chocolate; New York 1955; Pillow Talk; and Oriane (the last might be too grown up for a 15-year-old but is utterly gorgeous). The 4160 sample sets are super value and great fun.

She also likes Dior Addict, Dior Hypnotic Poison, Dior Pure Poison, YSL Black Opium, YSL Cinema, Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her and Guerlain Black Perfecto, all of which you should be able to try out in big department stores. Enjoy yourselves choosing.

Are you fond of green perfumes Sandy? I love them and could rabbit on for ages about them.

I need to try some Panache and Tweed, don't I? What with them having been ubiquitous in my childhood, and still easy and cheap to find. Yes to Blue Grass, PIAM or Chique or Charlie. Anyone smelt Charlie? I don't think I have but I remember the ads for it used to be everywhere. And Tramp - why did anyone think that was a good name for a perfume?!

Bluebell I've only just started on the Exquisite Essences box so I've only tried Annick Goutal Rose Pompom (pretty rose), Liz Earle Botanical Essences No 20 (nothing special and no longevity), E Coudray Iris Rose (very enjoyable) and this heavenly Merchant of Venice Byzantium Saffron and you are right, it really is worthy of a full bottle. Only it is not cheap! I wonder if anyone does decants.

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 19:04

Notino have Eau de Campagne at £61.37 for 100ml

SquirrelWatcher · 05/10/2017 19:12

Hello, I've come across your thread and have just purchase the Bloom Green Samples mentioned upthread. I love the concept of green scents! I remember a body spritz Boots did about 20 years ago that was the scent of cut grass that I loved as a teenager!

Restingwitchface · 05/10/2017 19:16

Hold on, I LOVE green scents! Maybe I'll buy something for me as well as dd...

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 19:33

RWF Ealing Green from 4160, is the one you want, tiz green and lovely, you know while you are placing an order Grin

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 05/10/2017 19:40

Hello Sandy, RWF and Squirrel!!

I'm really trying to avoid sample boxes but all this talk... I may have to just eat my fingers.

And I definitely didn't spend the afternoon looking at pictures of bee bottles

MrsPestilence · 05/10/2017 19:43

Cheap you are not meant to be buying things. Would you like me to send you some unlabelled samples to distract you?

PerfumeIsAMessage · 05/10/2017 19:49

RWF- you definitely need Ealing Green and you need some Yardley Jade (don't laugh!) which is the most wonderful green (and cheap as chips, about a tenner on Allbeauty at the mo') and some Vent Vert.

I love greens. I got the green sample set from that Dutch website (can't remember what it was called now) but some were a bit Hmm in the green department iirc.
