Newbie here to ask a question. Has anyone tried Romilly Wilde's perfume 'Idle'? I normally wear Caroline Herrera 212 and fancied a change - someone on another thread suggested a couple of perfumes (Gucci's Bamboo which I like a lot) and also gave a link to a website which gives suggestion on what you might like based on what you wear. One of the suggestions is Romilly Wilde's Idle...but it's only sold on-line so I can't test it and it's £90 which seems quite a bit when I've no idea what it smells like!

BluebellGal · 17/10/2017 16:42

Ah thank you sock I’m going to look for some Travalos tomorrow and will PM you

BluebellGal · 17/10/2017 16:50

snowgirl 212 was an early love for me that I forgot to mention in my perfume journey on the last thread. I had two or theee bottles (love those bottles). I didn’t like the VIP or Sexy flankers - had to be the original. I don’t know why the following perfume reminds me of 212 because it doesn’t share any notes but somehow it has the same vibe and reminds me of 212. Its similar in that it’s floral and musky. It’s the Bath House Velvet Orchid and Cardamom 60ml for £38 the nose is Ruth Mastenbroek who is very talented and this has amazing longevity and silage - you can also get cheap purse sprays from this brand to try. Other people say Elysium Clarins is similar but I haven’t smelt it

BluebellGal · 17/10/2017 16:52

snowgirl fragrantica is saying bies 313 is a good dupe for 212 - it’s also white floral with musk but looks like longevity and silage is poor but it is cheap £12.99 for 100ml

BluebellGal · 17/10/2017 16:58

snowgirl you might like some of the Narciso Rodriguez perfumes as they do some good fresh musks (eg the Narciso EDT), they excel at this genre and if you like 212 I think you would like this house. My fav is the poudre one but that is more powdery than fresh (but so beautiful) Romilly Wilde gets good reviews but I haven’t tried it.

Badders08 · 17/10/2017 17:24

Narciso poudre is gorgeous

Was in next earlier and the new femme scents are quite pleasant

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 17/10/2017 19:26

SOTD was Noontide Petals. Sparkling is such a good descriptor. Lovely!!

Forgot to say yesterday but my Look Fantastic calendar arrived- yay!!! DS1 is very interested though so having to keep it out of reach. He's got a Thomas the Tank Engine one but doesn't know yet Grin Postman tried to deliver AC one today but was at work and the neighbours were out too. Looking forward to a trip to the delivery office soon!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 17/10/2017 19:27

Oh, and kittens - yay for the notebook!! I found a forgotten about roll of washi tape and am trying to decide how to incorporate it into my scent journal!

MrsMacNally · 17/10/2017 19:29

Evening All - spent the day in a Bit of a Pickle (again). Nice to have made something I want to wear a lot and I'm ridiculously happy (largely due to having read Mandy Aftel in preparation) to have a fizzy green opening, a sweetish floral heart, and lots of vetiver and powdery sandalwood underneath. Could have spent at least six months locked in the workshop fine tuning though....

And talking of 4160, my Dark Heart arrived. Smile. This is a good example of why testing on skin is such a good idea. I've sniffed this on a smelling strip a few times and was always a bit put off by the oudhy whiff of decay/danger that is quite strong in the opening. sniff. On skin I discover this is gone very quickly. Am only an hour or so in, but so far its lovely.

Was really tempted to run with the tobacco theme and pick up a bottle of Dogon at TK Maxx (Pascal Morabito). The notes sound good and the reviews are favourable. Instead I went for Villa Ocre - cardamom and incense.

Judydreamsofhorses · 17/10/2017 19:44

SOTD was Rive Gauche for a trip to the stranger dentist. He was nice but I disgraced myself by crying. God.

MrsMacNally · 17/10/2017 20:38

Flowers & Gin for Judy

explodingkittens · 17/10/2017 20:54

judy Flowers - I'm sure you didn't disgrace yourself at all. Hope the tooth is feeling better now though?

Hoping my Dark Heart arrives tomorrow! Cardamom and incense sounds lovely as well - I've seen those Morabito perfumes on the TK Maxx website but never sniffed them for real. Are they any good? Actually, scratch that, don't tell me, because if they are that'll just be another one to add to the insanely long wish list!

SOTEvening - Avignon, perfect for singing a requiem.

Badders08 · 17/10/2017 20:55

MrsPestilence · 17/10/2017 21:02

SoTD is Killer Rose layer with Another Kiss. Layering may be the answer to your Christmas scent MrsM

SwedishEdith · 17/10/2017 21:04

I love lurking on these threads but don't have a very sophisticated taste in perfume. But my interest was piqued by mention of Magie Noire. I have bottle that must be 30 years old - vintage! I like but don't love it.

I also found another old bottle of Givenchy Fleur d'iterdit. Sprayed it on and my skin reacted almost instantly to it. It's got sentimental value so will just put it away and I've never really liked it.

MrsPestilence · 17/10/2017 21:27

Welcome Swedish , there are vintage perfume lovers on here who will happily become your new best friend for a sniff of those.

You don't have to have sophisticated or expensive tastes. You just have to sniff and like / love what you smell. Modern perfume is less likely to give you a reaction as many know irritants have been restricted, hence all the reformulations.

MrsMacNally · 17/10/2017 21:31

Bet that Magie Noire smells gorgeous Swedish Envy! What do you enjoy wearing?

Pest - yes, have just tried 2 parts Captured by Candlelight x 1 part Black Velvet Cafe over the dying embers of the Dark Heart. Just need a big blast of plum lactones (Femme?) and I'll be getting somewhere...

EK - am just exploring the older Pascale Morabitos as they are £12.99 for 100ml...The original Or Black was a big hit with LT/TS. Reviews for Or Noir, Dogon and Vila Ocre look promising.

SwedishEdith · 17/10/2017 21:43

Thank you both Mrs (Mesdames?) Grin

I like sickly, sweet ones - was an Opium/Poison girl in teens/early 20s. Recently like La Vie est Belle and Lolita Lempicka (purple one). But have old bottles of Coco, Champagne and Dolce Vita. Have got really old supplies of Rive Gauche, Tresor and Paris. And still love Poeme. See, not sophisticated. Grin. Pretty much all YSL perfumes give me a red skin reaction. Still looking for The One.

MrsPestilence · 17/10/2017 21:44

MrsM Grin

There is Pascale Morabitos everywhere on the discount sites.

GreenPolishToGo · 17/10/2017 21:53

Hello Edith 30-year-old Magie Noire, that's the real stuff alright! Don't worry about whether your taste is unsophisticated or not - one of my pet discoveries is a delicious smelling little cheapie called Hashtag I Love You, which is quite clearly aimed at the teenage market.

Snowgirl I found this on Idle. I'd be very surprised if samples don't become available because £90 is an awful lot to pay out for something unsniffed. I think most of us have a cautionary tale about the perils of blind buying a perfume that sounds gorgeous on paper.

Judy I'm sure the dentist didn't think you'd disgraced yourself. Flowers I hope he was able to do something for you.

Kittens I loved your description of yesterday's Apocalypse style twilight as stepping into a migraine. I suppose the perfect scent to go with all that Saharan dust in the atmosphere would have been L'Air du Désert Marocain. Only I didn't think of it until later (I do still have some of my sample left) so I consoled myself for the sinister skyline with the frivolously inappropriate, but deliciously chestnut and coffee-smelling Noir Exquis. You are right Cheap it was most definitely a day to avoid high priest types with gleams in their eyes and sharp implements.

I remember how very, very hard you worked on A Bit Of A Pickle (fabulous name) MrsMac. It sounds a marvellous success.

I have got as far as locating the pretty Perfume Society notebook and am now pondering whether to use it as a scent diary or a stash list, and if the latter, whether to split new and vintage into separate lists...Decisions, decisions.

MrsMac, Pest, Bluebell I would join in the blind sampling but my record on successful decants is not good so I'll content myself with hearing about your adventures.

SOTD is L'Heure Bleue - so, so beautiful, melancholy and fit for the grandest of grande dames.

Thank you for all the suggestions! Interestingly, the website that gave suggestions also suggested Narciso - so I must hunt that out to sniff. And I'll check out the other ones suggested too. Thank you!

Badders08 · 17/10/2017 22:24

Swedish...check out Dior addict 😁

MrsMacNally · 17/10/2017 22:52

Why didn't I think of that Pest? Wondering about Eau d'Epices in a Christmas context - has anyone tried?

Am swerving the Pascal Morabito feminines and all the very recent releases (oh, and the sport series). Have tried the reformulated Or Black and I am curious about Or Noir and Or Boreal. Didn't someone give PM's Girl a whirl? .

You're very kind Green - was just pleased to be able to apply theory to practice; would now like to spend five years locked in a cupboard learning more systematically...do you think I'm too old to elope to France and become an elderly apprentice in some big conglomerate's aroma chemicals division? Would the lack of science A levels be a deal breaker..? I was always quite good at chemistry and I've read The Secret of Scent (twice) Grin.

Snowgirl - £12.99 is my upper limit on blind buys and that's only if there are decent reviews...

Swedish - there are some lovely things on your list. Is your purple Lolita Lempika the one with the licorice note?

Judydreamsofhorses · 17/10/2017 23:03

Thank you for the gin and flowers! The dentist did more x-rays and examined me, but agreed there was nothing wrong. He suggested a root canal since it's been rumbling on for so long. Argh. He offered to do the first bit today but as it's settled down a bit I declined. I'm seeing my own dentist next week so we'll sort out a plan of action, but I am really nervous because my last RCT ended in the tooth eventually being extracted. (She couldn't find one canal, but the guy today said the roots were very straight so it should be straightforward. Fingers crossed...)

SwedishEdith · 17/10/2017 23:17

Badders - I will. (or is your Grin to indicate it's deeply unsophisticated? Wink

MrsM - yes, that's the one. Have got another as well - different bottle shape. Oh, and I found a really old Yves Rocher 8e Jour recently. Heady and sweet as well.
