Do you wear expensive makeup everyday?

... or is it for special occasions only?

DP thinks I'm ridiculous for wearing MAC foundation everyday Hmm and should only wear it for special occasions.

MAC is one of the few foundations that I've been able to find a shade pale enough in. NARS has one too but that's even more expensive. All drugstore brands are too dark/orange for me. So I don't have much of a choice (Caspar the ghost over here) other than wearing a more expensive foundation. He then pointed out most of my makeup is expensive and I need to eventually replace it as it runs out, costing more £££.

Do you use expensive makeup everyday or use drugstore for things like work etc and expensive for special occasions?

Can I also ask what you wear on a day to day basis?
I wear:
MAC foundation
Lancôme mascara
Lancôme eyeliner
Urban Decay eyeshadow
Collection eyebrow kit
Benefit bronzer
Revolution highlighter
NYX setting spray
Either MAC or NYX lipstick

To be fair, until recently, I've just used drugstore but have changed to higher end makeup recently. Maybe DP is right, maybe I do spend too much on it? I don't buy loads of different things of the same product, for context I only have one eyeshadow palette, three lipsticks, one eyeliner etc, I don't have a massive collection but the things I do have are more expensive. Maybe I should just wear the expensive stuff for occasions etc?

TIA Smile

I wear bare minerals everyday and use Dior blackout mascara, dermablend concealer.

Bare minerals is the best shade for me (I'm very very pale)

I don't wear cheaper stuff because it causes breakouts on my face.

Cooloncraze · 29/05/2017 21:43

Yea I wear Laura Mercier everyday because it's the best tinted moisturiser for me and it's intended for everyday wear.
If I saved it for special occasions it would go off!
I also wear Bobbi Brown eyeshadow and blusher everyday but cheap mascara.
If you think of the cost of makeup per wear / per day it's really very little. Plus I don't own masses.

Anyway since discovering super-cheap The Ordinary skincare (on MN) I can justify the spending more on makeup!

Mascaraandrum · 29/05/2017 21:43

Every day i use The body shop istablur primer, kat von d foundation ,urban decay eyeliner ,any mascara i can get my hands on ,mac lipsticks and mac setting powder ,nars laguna bronzer and nars highlighting blush ,it cost a fortune but works out cheaper in long term and only need to apply it once a day ,when i was using cheaper stuff i had to reapply often especially foundation

hollieberrie · 29/05/2017 21:43

Money is a bit tight for me too. I have a little bit of high end but mainly Boots type stuff:
Estee Lauder DW foundation
NYX under eye corrector
Beauty Pie concealer (bought off Ebay for £4)
Maybelline kohl pencil
Maybelline mascara
NYX eyebrow crayon
Laura Geller Balance n Brighten powder
NYX highlighter (only remember to do this sometimes)
Maybelline bronzer (only sometimes)
Vaseline on lips

I'd love all high end but its too expensive. I prioritise skincare more tbh - the Ordinary products are fab and not pricey.

MaisyPops · 29/05/2017 21:48

fanny Same. I've scaled back everything else having realised I'd rather save my money and the collection 2000 under eye concealer is no different to thr clinique one.

But my bare minerals foundation is my luxury keep item for the same reason as you. It's the only place I've found that does a light-medium coverage option for pale skin.

AvoidingCallenetics · 29/05/2017 21:55

Lose the dp and keep the make up.
He sounds like a controlling arse. I can't imagine my dh even noticing what make up I buy, let alone thinking he had a right to an opinion on it!

HickDead · 29/05/2017 22:01

I wear a real mix and replace it when I need to and don't really discuss with DH.

I wear -
Nars foundation
Rimmel powder
Collection concealer
Nars blusher
Benefit bronzer
NYX eyebrow pencil
Mac eyeliner
Mac eyeshadow
Maybelline mascara
Mac lipstick

BlondeB83 · 29/05/2017 22:07

I use the same every day.

Clinique moisturiser
MAC or YSL primer
YSL foundation
Benefit eyebrow stuff, eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara
MAC lip liner and lipstick

BlondeB83 · 29/05/2017 22:08

Oh and YSL touché eclat - best product ever!

BadTasteFlump · 29/05/2017 22:20

Yes I wear my good stuff all the time - lots of Chanel, I love their eyeshadows, and Clarins lipsticks. But also a lot of Stila, Smashbox, Mac and random cheap stuff - Collection, Rimmel and Bourjois. I'm a bit of a make up addict, and once I find something I really like I use it all the time - no point in keeping it for 'best' imo.

TurnipCake · 29/05/2017 22:21

Armani foundation
Laura Mercier secret camouflage
Bobbi Brown correct and conceal for under eyes
Burberry highlighter
Drugstore mascara
Nars blusher
Variety of lipsticks

OH knows better than to question my make up choices and what I spend on skincare. It's my money, my face and my lovely little ritual to enjoy.

ahipponamedbooboobutt · 29/05/2017 22:35

Every day is a special day so yes I wear my expensive make up all the time. I like mac foundation too but at the moment it's Laura mercier tinted moisturiser, nars blush and highlight, urban decay eyeshadow, benefit mascara and either mac or Charlotte tilbury lipstick or lipgloss.
Dh works with drugstore make up and is always trying to tell me how it's just as good as my expensive stuff. Because he deals with it every day he therefore knows everything about makeup. But as he doesn't wear and doesn't have any experience of putting it on his actual skin for a whole day, I politely tell him to stick his opinions where the sun don't shine Wink

Xmasbaby11 · 29/05/2017 22:37

I don't have anything expensive at the mo but I wouldn't save anything for best. It'll not get better with time. You've found make up you love, just enjoy it and use it!

MixedUpConfusion · 29/05/2017 23:04

And I don't wear any drugstore cosmetics as we don't have drugstores in the UK

Thank you!!!! Where are all the drugstores that people in the UK are getting their cheap makeup? I just go to Boots or Superdrug...

I wear Estee Lauder, NARS, Chanel, Dior, Smashbox, Mac, Lancome and Guerlain. Then set it all with a cheapy Avon setting spray Grin

Whileweareonthesubject · 29/05/2017 23:12

I disagree that you can't tell the difference in a blind test. I've had so many different brands of eyeshadow over the years and the only two that stay put, are Laura Geller and Liz Earle ( sadly, LE eyeshadows now discontinued). Everything else I've tried, regardless of price, have always virtually disappeared by lunchtime. LG and LE are still going strong at bedtime. Best eyeshadow ever was LE. Texture like velvet and colour that was true to the pot - didn't need fifty million layers to build up the colour. The ones I bought following their discontinuation, until I discovered LG, we're like rubbing grit on you eyelid in comparison.

HappyAxolotl · 29/05/2017 23:51

Wouldn't Boots and Superdrug be drugstores? I just thought a drugstore was a health & beauty shop and drugstore makeup was what we would call High St brands.

PonderLand · 29/05/2017 23:57

Yes I do, to me it's expensive anyway! I wear the Clinique moisture cream and Clinique translucent powder. My eye make up is cheap though. I only started buying expensive face makeup a few months ago and I think it looks much better in day to day wear than my cheap one did. The cheap one looked too heavy and obvious for day wear.

Softkitty2 · 30/05/2017 08:28

Re "drugstore" someone's being pedantic Grin

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 30/05/2017 08:34

I wear make up every day, I love buying it and the routine of applying it.

I wear:
Chanel
Bobbi Brown
Estée Lauder
Guerlain.

I really don't see why he is interfering in your decisions about make up, you buy it yourself?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 30/05/2017 08:53

Surely it all depends on your financial situation. If your finances are fine and have spare money to spend, then your DP should keep his nose out.
If you're struggling to pay the rent/mortgage, food bills or have CC debts, then he has every right to suggest you don't spend so much on make up.

ahipponamedbooboobutt · 30/05/2017 11:41

Pmsl. Boots the CHEMIST, superDRUG. Clues in the name. Drugstore is just the American term for chemist. A place you can buy makeup and paracetamol.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/05/2017 12:17

Well yeah. But it just seems weird to me when the only people in the UK who mention ‘drugstores’ are beauty bloggers.

‘Hey guys, here’s my video on my latest drugstore haul’.

You bought five items in the Stevenage branch of Boots. That ain’t no ‘drugstore haul’.

MaisyPops · 30/05/2017 13:03

Agreed mitzy
But then I think beauty bloggers are a funny breed of people. They come up behind MLM Bots like Younique.

This sums it up to me m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=696657703840249&id=363765800431935

OnlyOneOfThose · 30/05/2017 22:48

Yes, and my lovely perfume and designer bag. Why save things for best? Enjoy treating yourself to little luxuries every day if it's your money and you can afford it.

When I didn't have much spare cash, I would stick to more basic brands, but having one really nice lipstick in my make up kit gave me such a lift.

sherazade · 30/05/2017 22:58

Lancôme foundation, lipstick and liquid liner
Benefit mascara ,blush, bronzer and highlighter ( only for special occasions , don't wear any of this daily )
Mac brushes and brows
Illamsqua brows for occasions

Have purchased the following drugstore options but genuinely didn't get on with them :
Rimell exaggerate eyeliner ( found it way too thick and messy )
Rimmell eyebrow pencil ( so orange and unnatural )
L'Oréal hippy mascara ( clumpy and messy went straight in the bin )
NYx lip liners and liquid lipsticks - looked absolutely beautiful on but vanished off my lips in minutes
