Do you wear expensive makeup everyday?

... or is it for special occasions only?

DP thinks I'm ridiculous for wearing MAC foundation everyday Hmm and should only wear it for special occasions.

MAC is one of the few foundations that I've been able to find a shade pale enough in. NARS has one too but that's even more expensive. All drugstore brands are too dark/orange for me. So I don't have much of a choice (Caspar the ghost over here) other than wearing a more expensive foundation. He then pointed out most of my makeup is expensive and I need to eventually replace it as it runs out, costing more £££.

Do you use expensive makeup everyday or use drugstore for things like work etc and expensive for special occasions?

Can I also ask what you wear on a day to day basis?
I wear:
MAC foundation
Lancôme mascara
Lancôme eyeliner
Urban Decay eyeshadow
Collection eyebrow kit
Benefit bronzer
Revolution highlighter
NYX setting spray
Either MAC or NYX lipstick

To be fair, until recently, I've just used drugstore but have changed to higher end makeup recently. Maybe DP is right, maybe I do spend too much on it? I don't buy loads of different things of the same product, for context I only have one eyeshadow palette, three lipsticks, one eyeliner etc, I don't have a massive collection but the things I do have are more expensive. Maybe I should just wear the expensive stuff for occasions etc?

TIA Smile

Have done cheaper in the past when short on cash, but always tried to invest the most in foundation and concealer. You can make inexpensive eyeshadows and lipstick (esp brands like GOSH and MUA) work pretty well, but getting the right match and texture for your base is really important to make everything else look good.

That said, there are some bargain gems out there that are often as good as the expensive stuff, and I use those. But I'll spend a lot if it means I will definitely use every bit of a product I know I like, as opposed to wasting money on cheaper, non-returnable alternatives that don't work out.

Foundation: Laura Mercier, Dior, Bobbi Brown, Bourjois
Concealer: Bobbi Brown, Clarins, NARS, Collection
Powder: Bobbi Brown
Blush: NARS, Sleek
Eyeshadow: Dior, Charlotte Tilbury, MAC, Bourjois, Kiko
Eyeliner: NYX
Mascara: L'Oreal, Natural Collection
Brows: Natural Collection
Lips: Everything from NARS and Dior to MUA and GOSH (and a lot of NYX)

I appear to be the only one keeping Clarins afloat. Grin

What the fuck has it got to do with your partner? Confused Tell him to stick his opinion up his ass!

MaisyPops · 31/05/2017 08:21

BusterGonad
Because they are a partnership.

It always amazes me how many time when women say "it's family money" when they are annoyed at their partner spending money, or spending money earned by their partners (which is fine), but when a partner comments on their spending then it's 'what the fuck does it have to do with him'.

DH and I are a partnership. His spending has a lot to do with me and my spending had a lot to do with him. Neither of us keeps close tabs but it's still our business of we want to know.

taybert · 31/05/2017 08:24

Yep, every day. It doesn't keep anyway does it so "saving it for best" is daft. It just gets wasted and the cheap stuff still costs money so you actually spend more.

bigbuttons · 31/05/2017 08:42

I don't think of Mac and Bobbi Brown as high end, rather mid range.

I have recently splurged on some Kevyn Aucion 'foundation' and contouring powder. Bloody brilliant stuff, really looks good even when applied by a novice like me. I think that's the difference between high and and cheaper stuff.

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 08:48

Sorry Maisy you are right my reaction was a bit OTT! What I should have said is that if you can afford it and no one goes without then I think it is ok to buy such brands, if money is tight and your partner is also going without then you shouldn't buy high end. Sorry for my over reaction OP, I think I'm in a bad mood and your post maybe hit a nerve! Blush

Maudlinmaud · 31/05/2017 08:51

Five pages in and the op hasn't come back to the thread. Strange.

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 08:52

Oh and to answer your question I do wear high end when I wear makeup, but I'm also a fan of mid-price drug store such as No7 foundations and Max factor cream blush. My high-end stuff is generally for pigment such as lipsticks and eyeshadows as I love brights and can't bear cheap lackluster colours!

Floozie66 · 31/05/2017 08:54

How funny - my partner wouldnt ave a clue / be interested in what make up brands i used or how much they cost - maybe you need to shop without him ??

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 09:03

That's what got me Floozie, there must have been some kind of make up discussion, or he is a rare breed that knows the cost of Mac, Lancôme etc... I'm just not sure I'd take too kindly to being told to save my best make up for special occasions, it would go off being running out due to my lack of occasions! 😂

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 31/05/2017 09:10

It's your face, so if you've found make up that you like and feel good in, why would you save your 'best face' for special occasions? Confused

Bobbins43 · 31/05/2017 09:13

I'm with everyone else. Wear what works for you. I don't wear make up everyday (I think I probably need to!) but when I do it's

NARS tinted moisturiser
NARS concealer
Bobbi Brown pressed powder
Bobbi Brown blusher
Bourjois Smoky Eyes eyeliner
Benefit They're Real mascara
Bobbi Brown Art Crayon as a lipstick

Of course I own about 70 billion other things too. My favourite perfume is Chanel No 5 and I alternate that with Jo Malone Peony and Suede Blossom, I think it's called

What's his problem with your make up?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 31/05/2017 09:15

I use everything everyday.

Some is expensive, some cheap. It's not worth saving it, only to discover it's gone off in a few months.

Also, things tend to last me a very long time, so am more worried about them going off before running out.

veryveryquietly · 31/05/2017 11:02

trouble aside from lipsticks not so much, but I'm definitely helping to keep Clarins afloat with skincare purchases Wink

TheHyacinthGirl · 31/05/2017 11:09

On a daily basis I wear:
Benefit primer
Nivea BB cream
Benefit foundation
Benefit blusher
Make up revolution highlighter
Urban decay pressed powder
Urban decay eyeliner
Urban decay eyeshadow primer
Urban decay eyeshadow
Benefit eyebrow kit
Urban decay setting spray
Either urban decay or mac lipstick

For going out I really just swap the benefit foundation for urban decay all nighter foundation, and wear NARS highlighter.

I don't feel confident going out anywhere without a full face of make up, whether it's the nursery run or the races

April241 · 31/05/2017 11:09

I use a mix of high end and drugstore although last month I decided to revamp my makeup collection and went cruelty free. I don't have even half as much as I had before (but now I have the perfect reason to buy more as I obvs need to try new brands 👌🏻). I don't wear makeup everyday anymore as I'm on maternity leave so my day consists of being at home or just out walking with the pram.

Urban Decay, BareMinerals, Tarte, The Body Shop, theBalm, Illamasqua, Kiko, Charlotte Tilbury, Collection, NYX, NARS, Korres, Laura Mercier and Zoeva are all the brands I have products from just now.

Nabootique · 31/05/2017 11:35

I have a real mix of products, but I'd say maybe a 65/35% leaning towards more affordable. I don't keep anything for "best" and my face is usually a combination of both. Today I am wearing:

The Ordinary Serum Foundation
Collection Lasting Perfection concealer
NYX brow pencil
Bourjois cream blush
Bourjois powder
Eyeko mascara

Ooh, I'm actually quite cheap today! Grin

flapflops · 31/05/2017 15:47

Mac, Mac and more Mac and is be lost without my Mac Ruby Woo lipstick.

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 15:54

I don't bother with expensive mascara, mascara is mascara and the drug store ones are just as good as the expensive ones, don't get me wrong if they are in offer or free on a magazine I'll get them but I do find Rimmel and Max Factor ones are pretty decent.

DarthMaiden · 31/05/2017 15:59

In my experience there is definitely a difference in terms of pigmentation/longevity/ease of application in most "high" end make up.

I think this is especially true for foundation/tinted moisturiser, eyeshadows, powder blush, face powder and lipstick.

Where I'm less convinced - but buy the high end stuff anyway cos I can - is items like pencils, mascara, cream blush and nail varnish.

When you see pictures of people asking which side of the face was done with make up costing £500 vs dupes costing £60 - on first glance no you can't always tell.

However give it a few hours and I bet it would be obvious.

LetLoveWin · 31/05/2017 16:16

High end for a strong base, but do use cheap mascara & blush:

Inglot foundation
Inglot powder
Bobbi Brown colour corrector
Bobbi Brown concealer
Mac or Inglot lipstick
Random mascara/blush from Boots

falange · 31/05/2017 19:56

I'm quite old and I wear
Estée Lauder foundation
Lancôme mascara
Clinique lipsticks.
Charlotte tilbury eye brow thingy
Rimmel bronzer. Used to use guerlain but it broke too easily
when I go out I wear a rimmel primer, charlotte tilbury foundation, charlotte tilbury under eye stuff and concealer, mac eye shadows, bourjois eyeliner, a heavier Lancôme mascara, and Clinique lipsticks.
A good mix I think, I use what I like, not stuff just cos it's expensive
When I was young I could get away with wearing cheap stuff all the time but not now
Tell him to bugger off.

75daisies · 31/05/2017 20:00

I don't wear foundation or powder unless I really have to glam up for awards or event evenings. So on a daily basis, weekday or weekend I will wear a Chanel or Bobbi Brown lippy, Lancôme eyeliner and mascara. On the weekends I won't wear mascara. If I'm attending awards or events I'll wear Armani or Tom Ford red lippy, Chanel foundation on my eyes and lips and a Bobbi brown bronzer. With shu umera eyeliner, Chanel eye shadow and Lancôme mascara.
My daily look takes 5 minutes to do and my events/awards/date-with-the-husband look takes 12 minutes. I've been using mid range products since I was 17. High street stuff completely disagreed with my skin as a kid and I've not used it for so long I just wouldn't see the point in going back.
Saying that, I do use Vaseline body Creme for my face and body Grin I've used the expensive stuff and there's really no difference. It's all genes anyway and my mom and dad helped me out on that score!!

Ollycat · 31/05/2017 20:05

I wear Bobbi Brown everyday:
Foundation
Powder / bronzer
Blush
Eyebrow pencil (the best ever)
Eyeshadow
Lipstick

And Rimmel mascara (although thinking of changing this for Bobbi Brown)

Also have YSL touché eclat (sp?) and some other Bobbi Brown for evening.
