Do you wear expensive makeup everyday?

runchickenrunit · 29/05/2017 15:28

... or is it for special occasions only?

DP thinks I'm ridiculous for wearing MAC foundation everyday Hmm and should only wear it for special occasions.

MAC is one of the few foundations that I've been able to find a shade pale enough in. NARS has one too but that's even more expensive. All drugstore brands are too dark/orange for me. So I don't have much of a choice (Caspar the ghost over here) other than wearing a more expensive foundation. He then pointed out most of my makeup is expensive and I need to eventually replace it as it runs out, costing more £££.

Do you use expensive makeup everyday or use drugstore for things like work etc and expensive for special occasions?

Can I also ask what you wear on a day to day basis?
I wear:
MAC foundation
Lancôme mascara
Lancôme eyeliner
Urban Decay eyeshadow
Collection eyebrow kit
Benefit bronzer
Revolution highlighter
NYX setting spray
Either MAC or NYX lipstick

To be fair, until recently, I've just used drugstore but have changed to higher end makeup recently. Maybe DP is right, maybe I do spend too much on it? I don't buy loads of different things of the same product, for context I only have one eyeshadow palette, three lipsticks, one eyeliner etc, I don't have a massive collection but the things I do have are more expensive. Maybe I should just wear the expensive stuff for occasions etc?

TIA Smile

Absolutely. The only foundation I have found that doesn't break me out and is pale enough is by Chantecaille which is over £60. Think if there is any make up that you should spend money on, then it is foundation.

Also foundation can spoil after about 12-18 months so keeping it for best may mean you don't use all of it before it starts to smell or separate.

It is there to be used, so use it. Every day is worth using your best makeup/clothes/crockery.

Saurus72 · 29/05/2017 19:06

I cannot see (unless your family is in utter poverty and you are spending money on make up instead of food) why your DP would really be so interested. Also, make up has a shelf life, so imho, it makes no sense to buy, for example, two foundations, two blushers etc and then run the risk of them going off because you're not using them quickly enough. Anyway, I just wear my 'best' make up every day because that's all I have, and I really really don't believe in keeping anything for best, because then it just doesn't get used. I wear:

Nars/Bobbi Brown/Burberry eye shadow
Clinique eyeliner
Estee Lauder mascara
Giorgio Armani foundation
Boots No 7 loose powder
Guerlain meteorites
Clinique blusher
Clarins/Mac/Chanel lipstick/gloss

Yes, I have a big collection and it's mostly high end brands. I used mac a lot in my twenties and now use dior, mac, ysl.

I think the time is coming now though that cheaper brands such as mua, nyx etc are improving in quality so it's not always true that you need expensive products for better performance anymore.

reetgood · 29/05/2017 19:49

I don't wear everything everyday, but o use what works for me.

Expensive:
Bobbi brown tinted moisturiser
Lollitint for cheeks

But the rest is cheaper:

Maybelline mascara
Boots no 7 eyebrow tint
Rimmel concealer

Rainbowglow · 29/05/2017 20:00

I am a make up junkie. I alternate a lot. Here are my favs (bulging make up bags):

Tarte/Stila/Becca/ IT cc or Chanel foundation
Becca primer or Stila
Amazing Cosmetics/ Nars/Stila concealers
Benefit Hoola/Stila Convertible/ Bobbi Brown rouge pots/ Nars or Bourjois for cheeks
Benefit mascara
Liz earle eye pencil
Beauty pie brow pencils
Becca or IT cosmetics highlighter
Bobbi Brown lipgloss

And lots of other stuff. I love makeup.

Zahrah5 · 29/05/2017 20:06

Yes, mostly

I have huge collection and only need to purchase foundation, powder, mascara, eyeliner.

Everything else I am set.

Mainly I use
Urban Decay primer
Too Faced Bronzer
As far as blush I have huge collection but faves are one Dolce&Gabbana pink shade, couple of Chanels, Nars, Benefit, Chantecaille, Tom Ford

For eyes I have huge ampunt if palettes, mainly quads Guerlain is my top fave, Chanel, Dolce&Gabbana, Dior, Le metier de beaute, and couple of my Tom Ford quads. And loads of Burberry singles.

For lips I like Burberry almost exclusively.

I mix with cheaper brads if I think product is good, currently using Bourjois foundation and NYX powder.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/05/2017 20:12

I do, generally

Laura Mercier primer
Laura Mercier candleglow foundation
Laura Mercier or Chanel eyeshadow
Chanticaille or By Terry eyeliner
Lancome mascara
Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier blush
Laura Mercier highlighter
Laura Mercier, Chanel or Nars lipstick.

I like Laura Mercier!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/05/2017 20:14

It doesn't add up to that much though, probably an average £40 a month spend.

(Let's not discuss skincare though...).

DeadGood · 29/05/2017 20:45

Your DH doesn't understand makeup and what it's for. It's not like saving a cocktail dress for evening events, or going to a fancy restaurant sometimes.

It is your face - people see it every day. If you want people to think you are good looking, you have to look good every day. Not just once a year at the work Christmas party.

I think a lot of people think this way, but it is actually a thinking error. Can he explain his reasoning? Bet he can't.

RoxieMia · 29/05/2017 20:49

I save my Shiseido foundation for nights out - that's more because it has heavier coverage than mineral foundation which I wear daily.

My current everyday make up is:
Rimmel primer
Wet and Wild mineral foundation
Daniel Sandler blusher
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner
Clinique eyebrow powder
Superdrug B mascara
Benetint
Urban Decay powder

I don't usually spend actual money on makeup, I tend to get it as gifts or using vouchers (earned through surveys). I don't buy lots of the same item, .e.g. a lipstick, I just wear one colour until it's finished and they usually last me more than a year.

DarthMaiden · 29/05/2017 20:54

Your DP would love me then Grin(sarcastic)

I have a large collection of mainly Charlotte Tilbury and Bobbi Brown, plus some key items I like from Suqqu, Nars, lipstick queen, Urban Decay and Estée Lauder.

I don't think I even own any none premium brand products apart from some I bought when I forgot my makeup bag on a work trip.

I admit I'm a make up junky. I love the packaging as much as the products and I take a lot of care of them.

Each to their own is my view. If you find something you like at a price you are happy to pay then that's a good result.

PUGaLUGS · 29/05/2017 20:55

Yes I do.

DH wouldn't have a clue what make up I have or how much it costs.

I find it weird that your DP takes such an interest.

EnglishBreakfastTea · 29/05/2017 20:56

I wear expensive make up every day, I don't buy it because of the name or price, I get it as it suits my skin the best - stick with what you like best is my advice!

No7 primer
Bobbi Brown oil free foundation
Bobbi Brown bronzer
Tom Ford eyebrow pencil
Tom Ford blush
Chanel gel eyeliner
No7 longer lash mascara
Bobbi Brown tinted lip balm
MAC anti shine photo finish powder

DarthMaiden · 29/05/2017 20:58

Oops and quite a few bits from hourglass.

It's probably the brand I'm most loving ATM wrt foundation, concealer, the lip oil and the ambient pallette.

KatyS36 · 29/05/2017 21:02

I think there can sometimes be justification for saving things for best if they would still get finished / worn out. Make-up would just go off though, unless best is still at least several times a week?
If you need to save money, how about premium for eg foundation and budget for other buys?

Brillenbar · 29/05/2017 21:04

I dont know why you wouldn't wear the make up you live and makes you look your best any day that you chose to wear make up. It's not like you get up and think, well,I'm only. Going to the supermarket today so I'll wear this shit rimmel stuff that makes me look orange. Plus it has a shelf life so keeping for best is a real waste of money.

whirlycurly · 29/05/2017 21:04

Yes I do, Clinique, Bobbi brown and benefit here. It lasts ages though and I buy it in airports mostly.

The only non high end thing I wear is Barry m eye crayon which is better than any other I've found. I also love their nail varnish - lasts so much better than my Chanel ones.

MaisyPops · 29/05/2017 21:06

Going against the grain but I find it bizarre spending small fortunes on expensive makeup.
When people have done blind tests there's not that much difference.
The exception I'd say is foundation because getting that in the right finish and shade makes a massive difference.

But everything else I've cut back on and honestly can't tell the difference between my old urban decay naked eye palette and the max factor one with similar colours.

wuckfittery · 29/05/2017 21:11

Yes I do. High street brands generally don't do pale enough foundation and concealer for me, or they oxidise badly. I've wasted money buying them - higher end brands are happy for you to take a sample away with you to trial, so you can be sure you get the correct product.

Everyday makeup is usually:
Estée Lauder Double Wear Light or Mac Studio Fix powder foundation.
Mac or Nars concealer
Mac or BobbiBrown cream eyeshadow
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner
Max Factor, Benefit or Clinique mascara
Nars blush
Clinique, Estée Lauder or Revlon lipstick

I do have a LOT of makeup!

coconutterly · 29/05/2017 21:11

No, I think it's silly to save expensive things for 'special occasions'! Very silly.

Day to day I wear:
Maybelline fit me matte & poreless foundation
Tarte shape tape concealer (pricey but amazing. before I used this I used the famous collection concealer which was good too)
LA girl concealer (in a light brown shade to bronze/contour)
Laura Mercier setting powder
Too Faced love flush blush in the shade 'baby love'
Bourjois liquid eyeliner
Kiko Milano extra sculpt volume mascara
NYX colour correcting palette (the peachy shade is dreamy for dark eye areas)

& then for eyeshadow - my favourite day to day palettes are Too Faced chocolate bar, Too Faced natural love, and Tarte Tartlette In Bloom palette.

I spend a bit more than I'd like on make-up but I think I've found a decent balance of expensive vs. drug store, and I've found products I love from both categories; wouldn't want to give any of them up to be honest.

indaba · 29/05/2017 21:11

Friend of my mum gave me great advice. Spend your money on the stuff that stays on your face the longest. Cheap makeup removers. Expensive foundations.

Softkitty2 · 29/05/2017 21:16

Yes highend all the way for me because the drugstore range doesn't cater well for WOC.. My foundations lasts me about 6 months or maybe a bit less, so say I use my charlotte tilbury foundation which is about £28 cost per wear is pennies.

Oh Tell your husband to mind his own business how dare he dictate you.

bugaboo218 · 29/05/2017 21:27

Absolutely no point in saving expensive things for best, especially make up it will go off. DH has zero idea how much make up or skin care costs and he would never comment anyway about what I buy with my money. I use high end make up mostly clinique and clarins apart from mascara, where I use loreal because I replace it every few months.

HappyAxolotl · 29/05/2017 21:35

I'm surprised your bloke has a clue how much your makeup costs and how often it needs to be replaced - most men wouldn't know or care! Grin

Arealhumanbeing · 29/05/2017 21:37

Tell him to fuck off.
