Do you wear expensive makeup everyday?

... or is it for special occasions only?

DP thinks I'm ridiculous for wearing MAC foundation everyday Hmm and should only wear it for special occasions.

MAC is one of the few foundations that I've been able to find a shade pale enough in. NARS has one too but that's even more expensive. All drugstore brands are too dark/orange for me. So I don't have much of a choice (Caspar the ghost over here) other than wearing a more expensive foundation. He then pointed out most of my makeup is expensive and I need to eventually replace it as it runs out, costing more £££.

Do you use expensive makeup everyday or use drugstore for things like work etc and expensive for special occasions?

Can I also ask what you wear on a day to day basis?
I wear:
MAC foundation
Lancôme mascara
Lancôme eyeliner
Urban Decay eyeshadow
Collection eyebrow kit
Benefit bronzer
Revolution highlighter
NYX setting spray
Either MAC or NYX lipstick

To be fair, until recently, I've just used drugstore but have changed to higher end makeup recently. Maybe DP is right, maybe I do spend too much on it? I don't buy loads of different things of the same product, for context I only have one eyeshadow palette, three lipsticks, one eyeliner etc, I don't have a massive collection but the things I do have are more expensive. Maybe I should just wear the expensive stuff for occasions etc?

TIA Smile

I wear the same make-up every day, some expensive, some not. But then I don't really do "special occasions".

I wear:

Missha BB cream
Becca concealer under eyes
Korean brand (can't remember which) fine powder
Hourglass Dim Light powder
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner in cobalt or black mauve

So the eyeliner, concealer and Hourglass I'd class as expensive, the others, not really.

SpeakerOfTheHouse · 29/05/2017 16:21

Yes, everyday..

MAC concealer
MAC Studio Fix foundation
Guerlain bronzer
Dior waterproof liner
Dior Show mascara
No.7 lipstick matte - lasts all day
MAC lipliner

HappyAxolotl · 29/05/2017 16:23

I use a lot of MUA and Revolution products but like you OP I'm pale and pink-based so I have to go designer on foundation.

I've had some expensive mascaras over the years and have liked them but as you have to chuck them out every 3 months I find I resent the waste of money now. Plus the cheaper brands are catching up. I've never been disappointed with a Collection mascara even though the rest of their range isn't much cop.

maggiethemagpie · 29/05/2017 16:24

Yes. I don't have any cheap makeup so it's e

maggiethemagpie · 29/05/2017 16:25

oops posted too soon ! it's expensive all the way:
Laura mercier primer
YSL foundation
Bobbi Brown cream eyeshadow
Bobbi Brown eyeliner
Bobbi Brown smoky eye mascara
Clinique lipstick
Bobbi Brown blusher

Marmalade85 · 29/05/2017 16:26

Why is your DP dishing out make-up advice?

Ktown · 29/05/2017 16:29

Yes but I don't wear foundation.
When I do I always dilute it with primer and moisturiser for better absorption. And it makes it cheaper!

SuperFlyHigh · 29/05/2017 16:33

I wear tinted moisturiser Nivea, pressed powder Nars, Lancôme blush subtil, rimmel mascara (with argan oil), Mac bronzer (summer), illamasqua nude liner in rim, Mac or Charlotte Tilbury lipstick, burts bees or Blistex lip balm. Lip liner is primark or Charlotte tilbury, also maybelline undereye luminiser. Sometimes wear Lancôme cushion foundation.

If I want to make an effort or remember it's bare minerals eyeliner or collection 2000, a posher mascara (Lancôme) and Mac, Nars or urban decay eye shadows. Or if going out a posher foundation like Dior Star.

It's entirely up to you what you wear and when you wear it.

I now put on foundation and bronzer at home and mascara and lipstick on bus but when I travelled by train I put makeup on there and had a compact foundation. Yes I know I was Ms Tardy Slattern for putting makeup on on shock horror public transport! Grin

explodingkittens · 29/05/2017 16:34

I can't imagine my dp having any opinion on my makeup, and he'd get bloody short shrift if he tried to anyway!

I wear Dior foundation and mascara most days, Nars powder, YSL lip stain. I also wear Bourjois, rimmel, nyx etc - whatever takes my fancy really.

Unless you have a significant cash flow problem and your love of MAC products mean your kids are going hungry or the mortgage isn't getting paid, perhaps you should smile sweetly and completely ignore him?

pasturesgreen · 29/05/2017 16:37

Yes, I do! Life is too short and all that. Pretty makeup puts a smile on my face and means I start the day on the right foot, so why not if you can afford it?

Products I use daily are:

Sephora concealer
Chanel/Dior/Urban Decay eyeshadow
Clinique mascara
Dior brow gel
Chanel CC cream
Dior powder
Chanel lip pencil
Dior lipstick
Clarins lip balm

With the odd Kiko or L'Oreal product thrown in.

khajiit13 · 29/05/2017 16:38

I'd wear expensive everyday if i could afford it

PlayOnWurtz · 29/05/2017 16:39

Yes. MAC studio fix is the only thing that covers my rosacea so I wear it whenever I leave the house. Everything else I use is obtainable in boots

PantPlot · 29/05/2017 16:39

In my teens I used cheap stuff

In my twenties I stepped up to a mainstream mix of brands and in my thirties and now forties I use high end.

Yes every day, because I have the same face every day Grin

CowParsleyNettle · 29/05/2017 16:42

Yes, Laura Mercier, NARS Delilah and Hourglass every day.

It's worth it, cheap make up is so much harder to look natural.

LadyLapsang · 29/05/2017 17:57

My money, my choice. DH knows much better than to pass comment on how I spend my salary. If, however, you are both on a low / fixed income and you are spending more than you can afford / your share then you may need to economise.

WhatWouldDarylDixonDo · 29/05/2017 18:07

My daily make up is

MAC primer
MAC foundation
MAC concealer
MAC powder
Chanel eyebrow pencil
Smashbox contouring stuff
Benefit highlighter
MAC/Chanel eyeshadow
Smashbox eyeliner
Chanel mascara

This is what I wear every single day. Unless I'm having a total slob day when I don't wear anything at all Grin

WellTidy · 29/05/2017 18:09

I spent my teens and early twenties buying lots and lots of cheaper end cosmetics. It was a false economy, as nearly all of my choices were the wrong colours for me, didn't last or did nothing for me.

I discovered Estée Lauder when I was about 21, so 20 years ago. I haven't looked back. Everything I buy is tested on my face at the counter so I can be sure it's for me, or I take a sample. So it all suits me. I wait until there is a gift with purchase offer, so i get more for my money. Recently, I've branched into benefit and Dior with a bit of YSL.

Everyday, I wear:
Estée Lauder illuminating primer or Dior glow primer
Either Estée Lauder doublewear light, or YSL touche eclat foundation or Estée Lauder bb cream
MUA undressed eye shadow palette
Benefit they're real mascara
Benefit palette of blusters or Estée Lauder blusher
One of my three Estée Lauder lip liners
One of my seven Estée Lauder lipsticks
Benefit high beam or benefit low beam glow thing by my eyebrows

That's all I own. I replace what I have run out of and that's it.

Fibbertigibbet · 29/05/2017 18:12

No point in saving make-up for best- as others have pointed out, it will just go off! If an expensive product works for me, I will wear it every day (although most of my make-up kit is highstreet brands). I see expensive make-up as an investment- if I am unhappy with a product, I tend to buy more things to try out to try and replace it (I'm awful with buying foundations and BB creams, I probably have about 15), which is more expensive than buying one superior product!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/05/2017 18:15

I don't wear makeup every day because I often have to leave the house so early that I'm too rushed to apply it, but when I do wear it I always use Chanel foundation and powder, Benefit mascara and either Chanel or MAC eye make up. I don't buy cheaper usually as it makes me itch.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/05/2017 18:16

My makeup usually expires before I can finish it, so yes I wear it everyday. Usually guerlain, by terry, nars, Dior are my go-tos.

MinorRSole · 29/05/2017 18:35

I use it everyday, mainly use Clinique and I buy it when beauty bonus is on and typically sell the gifts on eBay unless they are good!
If i saved it for best it would go off! I don't use much though, 3 products for regular day way and an extra 4 or so for going out. Not including smashbox primer

Dulcimena · 29/05/2017 18:43

I don't wear makeup every day, but I certainly don't have one set for everyday and one for "special" - that would be ridiculous. If it's good enough to get used, it gets used. If it's not good enough, it gets chucked.

Judydreamsofhorses · 29/05/2017 18:44

Yes, a mixture of YSL, Dior, Hourglass and MAC. I also wear "expensive" perfume every day. Best might never come.

Whileweareonthesubject · 29/05/2017 18:47

I wear what works for me. I seem to have strange body chemistry that makes it hard for me to find foundation, eyeshadow etc that work on my skin without changing colour. I also have problems with perfume. Anyway, I have a mixture of brands - Max Factor foundation, Laura Geller eye shadow, L'Oreal or Bourjois mascara and Liz Earle lip gloss. No blusher - naturally rosy skin and I only wear a light coverage foundation. No eye liner, though I do sometimes use a Mac eyebrow pencil. I use disposable eyeshadow applicators, replace eye shadow every six months, new mascara on the first of the month and wash my brushes weekly. As long as I don't ask my dh to pay for it, none of his business what I pay.

Wear what suits you best.

ceceliajames · 29/05/2017 18:48

What does it have to do with your DP? I don't wear make up every day but when I do I wear

NARS foundation
NARS concealer
Anastasia dip brow pomade
Benefit mascara
Urban decay / Bobbi brown eyeshadow
NARS blusher
MAC/Sephora lipstick
