Or maybe MNHQ could set up a sub-forum: Style & Sneer

I'm sick of the threads about looking mumsy, frumpy, too old for this, don't shop here, fashion no nos. Yes, I know I don't have to open the thread. Yes, I may commit some of these supposed fashion faux pas.

I just think there are a lot of threads started to make people feel a bit shit about themselves. And others to make the posters feel superior.

The point of S&B is to have an opinion about style and beauty matters.

BusterGonad · 26/05/2017 08:26

Superfly it's me that sticks up for the M&S dress, I'm not sure why I do but I think it's because the sheep like hatred of M&S annoys me, like another poster said if it was in Zara no one would bat an eyelid! And I too do not like Converse, they are imo a rather generic choice of trainer. Just my opinion of course, people should wear what pleases them and not give a fig.

SuperFlyHigh · 26/05/2017 08:54

Buster yes it's you with the pink dress!

I sort of half agree/disagree with you re the pink dress being loved if it were in Zara.

I work near 2 Zara shops and browse the smaller and larger ones weekly... Last Friday in the larger ones there were some real horrors! Which I'll name here if I'm in the mood!

I personally find Zara a bit cheap but there are some gems if you look closely.... Nothing seems to be cotton though Sad

Yeh I laughed at the thread were posters were trying on That M&S dress and taking selfies. And bloggers and journalists - I've not seen a single one daring to dissent from the party line - deserve to have the piss taken too. What I don't understand is how a silly dress can cause so much anger. If fashion was only ever functional and never silly then I wouldn't like it as much as I do.
Anyway I think their autumn preview has some quite promising stuff so nerr.

BusterGonad · 26/05/2017 09:15

The thing with fashion is that generally someone will pull it off, tbh I'd rather see someone in that pink dress, dressed up with lovely shoes and gorgeous 60s makeup then someone too scared to try anything out of there comfort zone. I'm all for trying new things, I never thought I'd like a playsuit until I tried one on and now I love them, 10 years ago I'd never have half the styles in my wardrobe I have now, they are everyone's cup of tea but I'd rather people thought me a bit weird in my choices than boring!

Floisme · 26/05/2017 09:24

I'm all for trying new things and I make a point of doing it every so often. The worst that will happen is I'll look a tit.

BusterGonad · 26/05/2017 09:44

I'm with you on that Flo, I have a friend that loathes my floaty florals! Grin

I do think that S&B is somewhere people who were the bitchy girls at school who have now grown up hang out. Of course many, many posters are not such people but some threads really have an element of nasty judging and ganging up on something.
I am also flabbergasted at the arrogance at which some posters set out their style opinion as if it was the bible for everyone. The seeming lack of awareness of some posters that style is a personal thing is just bizarre.
The M&S thing is just ridiculous. They sell so much stuff: loads is rubbish but some stuff is great. Just use the search function on the website, it is not difficult.
The above are the negatives but otherwise I generally like the chat and find it interesting. I am also frequently amazed at how helpful people are at finding outfits and offering suggestions. That is very kind.

SouthChinaMorningPost · 26/05/2017 19:51

OP take your grudges to AIBU - this is S&B where we wish to indulge our little passion!

And yes!
Death to the ankle sock!

OCSockOrphanage · 26/05/2017 20:11

S&B is generally kind and helpful. AIBU it isn't. Occasionally they overlap. I hate AIBU and relationships, because everyone is so morally correct. Here on S&B, we may question people's choices, or suggest alternatives, and alterations, but we usually accept that if you want a pink tutu, then our mission is to find you the best best pink tutu! Plus the handbag, shoes, makeup and hair cut to do it proud.

OCSockOrphanage · 26/05/2017 20:43

And, unleashing my inner pedant. S&B is usually better written and spelled than AIBU or relationships.

CrispyBathTowel · 26/05/2017 20:51

Buster once you mentioned the 60s make-up I instantly thought of Dawn O'Porter - I think she would look fab in that dress.

BusterGonad · 26/05/2017 21:38

Crispy exactly, its a quirky look that some people would look amazing in!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/05/2017 21:57

OCSockOrpanage has it right.

Drop the mic, we're done here.

Grin
BusterGonad · 26/05/2017 21:59

Your right OCSock we may mock someone's choice of outfit but we do go out of our way to make sure they get said outfit! Grin

Spudlet · 27/05/2017 19:40

I think That Dress is one you would have to commit to completely. Hair, makeup, accessories, the lot. Not an easy wear by any means.

Not for me but I'm sure there's someone out there who would pull it off beautifully! But I am not she. Grin
