Or maybe MNHQ could set up a sub-forum: Style & Sneer

I'm sick of the threads about looking mumsy, frumpy, too old for this, don't shop here, fashion no nos. Yes, I know I don't have to open the thread. Yes, I may commit some of these supposed fashion faux pas.

I just think there are a lot of threads started to make people feel a bit shit about themselves. And others to make the posters feel superior.

OP posts:

It's ok to say "I really don't like those" or "I wouldn't wear those together" or "I'm not a fan of..." or even "it's a bit boring". It's better when they give a reason e.g. colour or particular style detail. I do find it weird when people say something perfectly normal and everyday is "vile" or make sweeping generalisations about a brand (usually frumpy) or that they are a certain age and wouldn't be seen dead in it because their granny would wear it. I think sometimes people forget that the OP is asking about whether something is suitable for an occasion as much as if it's "nice".

There are ways of saying things aren't there? "I wouldn't wear those shoes" is different to saying "they're vile, I wouldn't be seen dead in them"

sugarbeep9 · 25/05/2017 13:59

Janejeffer thank you.

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 14:09

Nothing I too get pissed off with the M&S hate threads. It seems to be the in thing to slag off everything in the shop, even though it sales all types of fashion and most styles.

Maudlinmaud · 25/05/2017 14:11

I like m&s bras. Wouldn't say it on here though.

OpalTree · 25/05/2017 14:13

Me too Maudlin. Apparently you are silly and wrong if you think a Marks bra fits you nicely. Confused

BuzzKillington · 25/05/2017 14:15

I like the strong opinions on here - it certainly has made me think twice over the years. Wouldn't it be dull if people were like they are in rl and said, 'oh that sounds/looks nice' when they mean the opposite?

S&B has made me obsessed with other women's manky feet in the summer. I have school mum friends who are all well dressed and then I look down and see thick, yellowed and cracked hard skin on their heels. Bleurgh.

I will admit to rebelling against MN and wearing the much hated Birkenstocks though. I know they're ugly, but I love them.

Maudlinmaud · 25/05/2017 14:17

I know! The fit is fine. I'm wearing a panache today and the m&s variety are every bit as good. I think it's the measurements people have a go at but I measured myself and it was spot on.

friendlyflicka · 25/05/2017 14:19

I think Style and Beauty is lovely. It is my favourite board for friendliness. People laugh at themselves and nobody takes it too seriously. There are no huge moral issues on here so it is fun

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 14:20

M&S do measure incorrectly BUT obviously if you know your size then their bras are fine!

WanderingTrolley1 · 25/05/2017 14:22

Yabu.

friendlyflicka · 25/05/2017 14:23

i.e. People don't like Crocs but it is nothing like on the Dogs board when someone mentions labradoodles, or about children and what age they can be left in the bath. Crocs is not a moral issue (although some might describe it as one). This board feels lovely and relaxing...

Maudlinmaud · 25/05/2017 14:24

Buster I needed to go down from 32 to 30 (possiby even 28 now) so you are right actually.

QueenMortificado · 25/05/2017 14:26

Can't we just have this MN wide? There's a thread at the moment of "things you dislike which everyone else likes" which is basically an excuse to sneer about all sorts of things. And the thread yesterday where someone just posted some pants she'd bought which she liked and were comfortable where posters were falling over themselves to tell her how ugly they were.

Sometimes it feels like MN is just an excuse for people to be absolute bitches in a way they wouldn't in real life

nothingwittyhere · 25/05/2017 14:27

**Buster Yes! And all shops have a mix of great, ok and horribly unsuitable but it's Marks that gets it in the neck all day every day here. Just tired of it.

Haffiana · 25/05/2017 14:27

I wouldn't be seen dead on this threadGrin

Seriously, if I ask for an opinion about style or fashion, or even if I don't ask, I want the TRUTH about that opinion. I don't want people just to be nice to me. That is the case both here and in real life with acquaintances and friends. Sorry, but if you are likely to be offended or upset then look elsewhere. Maybe there should be a 'polite lies' forum? Why should people lie here? What on earth is the point of that?

VintagePerfumista · 25/05/2017 14:27

There is a MNer of old who is famous for her sneering bitchery on S&B. In fact, I can only follow her many namechanges because of her guffawing and taking the piss out of people on S&B threads.

I'd love to see her in real life because in my head she's just Vicky Pollard and her leggings have gone a bit see through. Grin

I'm guilty of saying I think White Stuff and Birkies are frumpy. I'm also guilty of loving M&S jeans and Asda knitwear. I think there are ways, and then ways, of saying things...the poster I am thinking about will start threads to take the piss out of a particular item which is "in" or throw comments around like "nobody ever has looked good in an X" when the OP has just said "would I look OK in an X" She just enjoys being a bitch I think. (it'll be because she knows we can see her bum through her see-through leggings I expect Grin)

VintagePerfumista · 25/05/2017 14:28

X posted with QueenMortificado- exactly. Agree totally.

Iamastonished · 25/05/2017 14:34

Me to Maudlin and Opal. I have been intervened and know what size I am. I can always find a bra in M and S that fits me as I am a 32B – yes I really am.

I also have a Per Una maxi dress that I like.

I am often bemused when a poster asks for shoe advice for low to mid heel dressy shoes. They inevitably get links to shoes with vertiginous heels that most people can’t walk in. The high heel lovers simply can’t get their heads around the fact that a lot of us simply don’t find high heels comfortable.

PersisFord · 25/05/2017 14:35

buzz but that's so mean!! Why are you looking at people and judging them by the skin on their heels????

Haffiana · 25/05/2017 14:35

Actually, now that I have pondered this question a bit more deeply, something that I find very ugly on MN is the reaction to any poster who has money, or a large house or a nanny or anything along those lines - or even just, in some cases, is not working because financially able to. Said poster may have appalling personal problems but will still only receive nasty jealous vitriol.

Still, it 'outs' the nastier elements. If everyone was polite all the time we would never know what a heaving cess pit their hearts are...

PersisFord · 25/05/2017 14:42

I should perhaps add that I have feet like a hobbit. But I think I'm doing well to get up and dressed and brush my hair and get my kids where they need to go.

Bluntness100 · 25/05/2017 14:46

I think folks tend to be quite honest. I seldom see sneery.

Marks do get it in the neck because they have many clothes that are unbelievably unwearable and awful. The pink monstrosity is simply an example of that. Saying it's on trend is bizzare, I've seen no one wear anything like it. High fashion is supposed to be translated into wearable for the high street from the catwalk and if they had made that dress in a better material, with more gently fluted sleeves, and a more fitted shape in a gentler colour, it would have sold, but they didn't and they got it wrong. Again,

Their financial results prove just how wrong they are getting it unfortunately and simply back up what the public are saying on here. They have it wrong and consumers are voting with their purses. The pink dress is simply the leading example and visualisation of how badly wrong they have got it unfortunately.

That doesn't mean they don't have some decent pieces. But when they lead with something the vast majority of women would not wear other than for others amusement, they need to sit back and say ok that was a mistake.

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 14:47

Maud they measured me at 40 once, ffs I thought I had become obese over night, I was a 36!
Nothing I know, everyone is up in arms about the pink M&S dress but I'd actually rather wear that then some voting safe^^ assemble! That's me though, I like frills, and flutey sleeves!

UnaPalomaBlanca · 25/05/2017 14:50

Love S&B forum and generally find it a positive place. Strangers will spend time researching and recommending outfits for each other and if someone posts a picture of themselves, the comments are usually supportive.

BusterGonad · 25/05/2017 14:53

Bluntness it was me that said it was on trend, I don't think that's bizarre at all!
