Oooh just had an offer accepted on 10ml Dioressence and 5ml Poison for 18 euro.

FloofyCat · 20/05/2017 19:06

I too love the thread title - it's wonderful! I'm sorry I can't remember who, and it's on the old thread, but congrats to the fragrant DD who coined it.

I'm so glad it isn't just me who thinks the TF love is a bit...overhyped. I do like the neroli one but agree there are lots of similar ones for less £££. (Dare I say even 4711 is a great alternative here, especially vintage ones) The only other one I actively like is Velvet Orchid but, again, for the price I would expect better longevity. Style over substance for sure.

Three and olli glad you are liking your Jade and Dove - sometimes it's even more satisfying finding and loving a cheap scent than an expensive one. In the way that sometimes chippy chips can be better than steak Wink

SOTD is 4160s Invisible Ben (and thank you very much green Flowers) I am absolutely in love with it and it's an unexpected lovely surprise as I knew I would like Sunshine and Pancakes, and the suffragette one etc but I hadn't heard of this one properly and it's gorgeous - lemony and sparkly (DH says I smell like a lemon sherbet sweet, which is the highest of praise from him, believe me Grin) It has livened up my bed rest and even prompted me to change my nightie in homage - a very yellow frilly flouncy baby doll seemed suitable for this. Cannot wait to try London 1969, I have ear marked a long kaftan-y type paisley print nightdress Grin

Badders123 · 20/05/2017 20:05

"Pink smelling mingers" 😂😂😂

FloofyCat · 20/05/2017 20:12

Badders you reminded me to say I totally misread that the first time ShockGrin

Badders123 · 20/05/2017 21:06

😄 me too!
I'm pinching that phrase for all the pink candy scented crap that seems to be in fashion atm 🤢

Badders123 · 20/05/2017 21:15

Three...yes I know what you mean re the packaging of the Tom Ford.
Very masculine and boring...dsre I say even pretentiously so??

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 08:57

Had a lovely chat with my sister last night about perfume 😁
I have given her the blind buy Elizabeth Arden as she loves floral scents and predictably she loved it 😁
I had completely forgotten it was me who first bought her SJPs lovely...
She wore it all the time.
We were discussing when we lived at home (we shared a room) and I wore obsession and nightmusk and she wore Paris and Lou Lou (no wonder mum made us keep the window open at all times!!)..she was really surprised to find our that obsession and Lou Lou were created by the same nose - and then I pointed out that Paris and sun moon stars were created by the same nose too so we have decided that a actually we have similar tastes, but different ends of the olfactory spectrum...
So...she likes sticky jammy rose
I like soft powdery rose
She likes floral chypre
I like floral oriental
So funny to think back over all our perfumes...
Sorry for waffling but it just made me smile
Have a good day everyone x

That's interesting Badders- I love these perfume memories...I am in Paris today.
I will tell my non-MNer but perfumista friend about the Obsession-Loulou connection as only yesterday I sent her one of those 1980s links saying "who wore this?" as it is one of her signatures. She names "powdery" always as what she aims for, her other faves are Diva and Boudoir.
I am wondering if Yardley should be paying us commission for the sterling work we do on Jade.
Predictably the Boots Lemongrass offer was rejected. Idiot has had it on sale at £50 for at least 2 years. I'd pay him up to £30 but he ain't getting £50.

ThreeForAPound · 21/05/2017 10:02

Grin pink smelling mingers. Love it. I do have a couple of pink mingers I love, though. 4160Tuesdays New York 1955. Candy floss and marshmallow. Extremely sweet and not my average...but I am very fond of it.

Floofy - I'm intrigued by Invisible Ben. One of the few Tuesdays fragrances I don't think I've sniffed. I love Sunshine and Pancakes. Its one of my happy smells Grin.

And love the image of a flouncy yellow baby doll. Glad I'm not the only weirdo one who does this sort of thing.Last night I felt grotty, so had a shower, put on some crisp white PJs and doused myself in JM Verbena Intense. Lovely. I was wafting around my ramshackle suburban semi like it was a sunlit hotel room in the south of France.

Badders - TF packaging just makes me think 'Michael Kors with pretensions' to be honest. But I am NOT a snob and I will have a sniff of some TF next time I'm in a department store (not very often...am a hopeless online blind buyer).

You've inspired me to have a perfume chat with my sister. We used to have similar tastes and stole perfume from each other's bedrooms in our teens Grin, but she has stuck firmly with Angel for years now. Hideous, headache-ey scrubber on me but somehow it transforms into something light and less sweet on her....

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/05/2017 10:18

Oo can I join in?

I'm in the market for a new perfume and I can't decide between

Chantecaille Petales
FM Dans tes bras or
FM Noir epices

They are all very different but I'm a bit psychotic in my perfume choices -I wear JPG classique EDP a lot, also Dear Polly by Vilhelm Parfumerie and Marc Jacobs original (very Gardenia-y)

What are your experiences of the ones I'm thinking about? I'm quite a
one-note type of person, my brain doesnt seem to 'understand' more complex scents and powdery/iris scents smell dreadful on me.

I always seem to choose some combination of spicy/sandalwood/patchouli/gardenia/tuberose/jasmine

Are there other scents you would recommend?

Thank you oh wise ones!

Meripenopause1 · 21/05/2017 10:56

Lady maybe sample the Liz Earle perfumes (at Boots)?
Nos 100 and 20 are floral. No 9 has jasmine and sandalwood.
No 15 is heavier and sandalwoody.
No 20 is a bit heavy on the rose for me.
No 1 is more citrus, than floral but I love it.
If you are tempted by vintage, Balenciaga's Michelle is a gorgeous gardenia. I have bought several ebay bottles quite cheaply and all have smelt great.

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 11:09

Lady...have you tried the guerlain gardenia?

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 11:09

Lady...have you tried the guerlain gardenia?

VintagePerfumista · 21/05/2017 11:17

I find Dan Tes Bras (like most FM if I'm honest) another meh perfume. My most awful classification for a perfume (beyond the Pink Minger Grin) is "nice". And that's how I find most Malles that I've tried. In fairness, I blind bought all of them because the names are magnificent. The perfumes less so. (again IMO)

If you like sandalwood, you might like Diptique Tam Dao, (very similar to vintage Dune IMO) Spicy, then look no further than the wonderful Tauers that we all genuflect in the presence of....Lonestar Memories, Au Coeur du desert, L'Air du desert marocain are the ones I know and absolutely adore. They take your breath away. I could never decide which would be my favourite, as each time I squeeze a drop out of my running-out samples I love that one best.
Patchouli- Hippy Rose by Heeley is your man. Very gentle with the spraying though- to not stray into hairy biker territory on the drydown. Grin
L'Occitane do a lovely Jasmine perfume- dd has it, Jasmine and Bergamot (the Bergamot helps it not to waft over into that nappy-needs-changing thing that sadly, jasmine sometimes does!)
Chanel of course, do Gardenia.
Given your user name though, you should definitely try Keiko Mecheri Canyon Dreams!

VintagePerfumista · 21/05/2017 11:19

Bollocks! Just missed a 50ml Eau du Sud which went for opening price of 24 euro. I shall stop weeping as long as it's been bought by one of you lot!

VintagePerfumista · 21/05/2017 12:47

Me again!

I'm scattergunning today (can you tell I'm supposed to be preparing a workshop lol) I messaged my friend about Loulou and she made me go and open the vintage sample I have and try it. I have it on my inner elbows as my wrists are already taken up by Paris (am not going for subtlety today, oh no) When the powdery opening has gone, it is very similar to Poison which from its advertising etc I'd never have imagined...a quick google shows that they are considered to be similar (the blackcurrant- which tbh I can never smell as that anyway)

In order to complete my day I shall need to put Kouros somewhere (any ideas?) as one friend wore Paris, one Loulou and one Kouros when we all lived together in 87!

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 13:11

Back of the knee!?

VintagePerfumista · 21/05/2017 13:21

Grin that's where my friend suggested! I'm not very flexible though and not sure I can get my schnozz down that far anymore. Might go for a spray on a card.

Am going to have to open the windows....full blown 80s bling in an olfactory way here.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/05/2017 14:43

Thank you so much for some wonderful suggestions! I can't wait to get started!

MrsCocoa · 21/05/2017 14:50

Have found thinking about a top 5 quite a painful thing this weekend. Certainly brings to life the facets of perfume appreciation! I had several lists at one point - people and events; difficult to replace things to grab on the way out of a burning building; best examples of favourite categories; vintage; current most worn; top 4160s.

Phew..! It's certainly easier to whittle this down to 15 or so. But to stick strictly to the 'what wouldn't I want to be stranded without' desert island scenario (without making any assumptions about climatic conditions):

Eau de Sud
Les Nuits D'Hadrien (or Shazam!)
Audace
(vintage) Cabochard
(vintage) Youth Dew
(vintage) L' Heure Bleue

Whoops! Was that six?

MrsCocoa · 21/05/2017 15:00

And Sahara Noir was only just edged off that list - so some respect here for TF!

(With you though on Neroli Portofino being a puzzle given it doesn't seem to have particular stand-out qualities but still commands a hefty premium?).

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 15:12

Oh Mrsc - youth dew is a thing of beauty! I still haven't tried l'heure bleue yet 😔

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 15:12

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 15:35

Stupid phone! Sorry for multiple posts

Badders123 · 21/05/2017 16:59

Audace!? Wow. I haven't smelt that in years
I've just remembered I used to like Madame rochas
