What's the best beauty tip you have that works?

Just a general question really. I want to know if I'm missing out on any untapped Gold Standard beauty techniques!

The best tip I have currently is to run a little translucent powder through your brows if they look a bit fierce. Settles them right down. Also "Eyebrows are sisters, not twins."

Great thread. I have zero knowledge about skin / beauty stuff but I find that pure almond oil works a treat for my skin and hair: once a week or so I'll slap a load on my face then comb some through my hair. Then, as a big greasy mess I'll go to bed (I have a separate pillowcase for this). In the morning my skin is glowing and soft and my hair (once it's washed) is lovely. Weirdly coconut oil had the opposite effect - I found it very drying.

kennycat · 03/05/2017 20:08

I have no tips I'm afraid as i look like a wreck permanently but happily going to take some of yours in board,

Just a question though; what is oil cleansing? What do you cleanse with? Olive oil? Baby oil? Engine oil?! Serious question, I need to know a it sounds like it works brilliantly.

sympatico1 · 03/05/2017 20:38

Superflyhigh - I agree with your comments re overdone eyebrows - but it's not just eyebrows, it's overdone everything these days - thick painted, rectangular eyebrows, massive false eyelashes, caked on foundation and over the top contouring - instead of making the ladies look more attractive, it just makes them look like drag artists!

Destinysdaughter · 03/05/2017 21:34

kennycat I use Body shop Chamomile cleansing oil. I really like it, it's light, good for sensitive skins and really takes off makeup well.

dementedma · 03/05/2017 21:48

Coconut oil on scaly hooves gives you lovely soft feet.

kennycat · 04/05/2017 19:57

Thanks @Destinysdaughter I will give that a go.
And the coconut oil in feet - my feet have aged by about thirty years in the last 2 years.

loveisenough · 04/05/2017 20:21

I tried the tightlining method of invisible eyeliner recommended on here and it makes such a difference! I got a Rommel waterproof eyeliner (very similar to the wind up Clinique liner) but only £4

loveisenough · 04/05/2017 20:21

'Rimmel'

'Drink gallons of water' isn't basic biology. It's bad biology - peddled by therapists who never even got within sniffing difference of an actual science degree, or advanced qualification.

It's right up there with bleddy 'de-toxing' bogus fuckery...as though we hadn't all been born with a built-in, incredibly efficient and sophisticated 'de-toxing' ability...otherwise known as your liver and kidneys FFS.

Years ago, I spent a couple of years running a wee beauty salon and had to listen to plenty of astoundingly guff nonsense, along these lines from well meaning, but hopelessly uninformed therapists Hmm

And, I'm no scientist, I'm a literature graduate. But, I did actually listen during all my science lessons at school, got my 3 science O Levels, and have a rough working knowledge of how your body actually works.

Owlish · 05/05/2017 09:29

When I was low-carbing I made the effort to drink 3 litres of water a day for a year or so. Made no difference whatsoever to my skin. Possibly people seeing an improvement were also taking more care of themselves anyway, and that's where the improvement came from?

OutToGetYou · 05/05/2017 12:23

Whenever I've done it the only noticeable difference has been the time spent in the loo!

EleanorRigbysNeice · 05/05/2017 12:48

Well done Ma. Liver and kidneys, if we look after them, work wonders! I always drink water with meals and first thing in the morning, out of habit. If I'm in the 🍷I try to have a glass of water in between bottles glasses.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 05/05/2017 12:51

I drink gallons of tea. Water, not so much.

But apparently tea doesn't count.

MaQueen · 05/05/2017 18:07

After all, just look at the staggeringly huge difference between velvet skinned, lush haired, bambi-eyed Nigella Lawson (who luffs her wine, cream, butter and wine, and cheese, and wine)...and the withered-faced, dusty-haired Gillian McKeith (who luffs her steamed tofu and boiled alfalfa shoots).

I know who I'd rather look like (they are the same age, by the way).

EleanorRigbysNeice · 05/05/2017 18:10

Hmmm.... Nigella's had a lot of "intervention" though.

MaQueen · 05/05/2017 18:12

Of course, tea bleddy counts...it must be 99% water FFS.

'Oooh, it's bad for you, and it's a diuretic' twitters some ditsy therapist....tea might be a (very) mild diuretic, but that is very amply compensated by the fact you're drinking a big mug full of water with it, at the same time

MaQueen · 05/05/2017 18:13

She has always looked bleddy lush, right from the start.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Gillian McKeith had had some work done, too.

MaQueen · 05/05/2017 18:18

It's akin to all the bogus, Harry Potter-esque names that cosmetic companies attach to their latest wonder skin cream...

"Our new, patented face cream contains plumptering, velvetious, illuminadides to smooth and perfect your complexion.

WTAF Hmm

FatGirlWithChocolate · 05/05/2017 18:45

So glad someone said about the water thing. Drives me bloody crazy when people insist on it (it's a big thing in the intermittent fasting world). ..and yes, tea and coffee count!

FatGirlWithChocolate · 05/05/2017 18:48

Especially when they post pictures of industrial size water containers marked off with how much they need to drink every hour or so. ..makes me feel slightly homicidal.

OutToGetYou · 05/05/2017 19:01

It's all boswellox!

MaQueen · 05/05/2017 19:12

It's biology for the hard of thinking...

Spybot · 05/05/2017 19:18

For acne sufferers- try cutting out as much sugar as possible. My skin is clear these days but when I start eating sugary things, and drinking white wine, my hormonal acne returns all along my jawline. My acne began in my early twenties when previously my skin had been clear. I also started drinking in my twenties when I hadn't really indulged before. I think the sugars in alcohol played a part in it.

OutToGetYou · 05/05/2017 20:46

I've found that cutting down on dairy has reduced those angry hormonal spots. I've not cut it out totally, just not having much - a bowl of cereal every day was too much, one cup of tea is fine. I now have porridge made with almond milk instead.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/05/2017 21:12

I'm off to Google McKeith. As far as I can remember she looked like an angry, dessicated wasp. I would love to see what work she's had done. Hoping for an Anne Robinson level makeover
