What's the best beauty tip you have that works?

Just a general question really. I want to know if I'm missing out on any untapped Gold Standard beauty techniques!

The best tip I have currently is to run a little translucent powder through your brows if they look a bit fierce. Settles them right down. Also "Eyebrows are sisters, not twins."

Don't you think you can "overwork" the skin, though? By that, I mean exfoliation/acid peels/brightening toners/retinol. Years ago, I used a Moisturiser with retinol. I swear it made my skin itchy, sensitive and forever fragile. I used high spf with it too. I've gone back to basics. Using Dermol 500 cleanser and Moisturiser. Nothing harsh. My skin is ageing (as it will) but it's not sensitive, as such, anymore.

Girlywurly · 28/04/2017 13:00

Salma Hayek, retainer?

retainertrainer · 28/04/2017 13:06

Yes I think so girly.

usernoidea · 28/04/2017 13:10

As a make up artist there are 2 things I always do to make me look less shattered (have a new baby).
Nude eyeliner on waterline and use my touche eclat over my eyelids....try it....you look much more alert!

homebythesea · 28/04/2017 13:27

If you are of the permanently shiny persuasion, apply loose translucent powder with a beauty blender, pressing it in firmly (none of this swishing with a brush nonsense). Tip c/o Wayne Goss. It bloody works!

sarahmum27 · 28/04/2017 13:37

I don't do anything special.
I moisturise 2-3 times a week, remove makeup with baby wipes sometimes forget.
I slap a bit of foundation on with my fingers, bit of mascara, sometimes eyeshadow and eyeliner.
I can't stress enough to leave your hair alone!!
Iv always had long healthy hair, and people are always saying "how do you have such long hair? Mine won't grow"
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that bleaching, straightening, curling and scraping it back into odd angles, does not help with hair growth.

I like to keep it simple and I'm still being ID in my 30's so less is more i think.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/04/2017 16:36

Use the darker shades of pressed powder as bronzing powder, There's no annoying glittery shite in them so it looks more natural.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 28/04/2017 16:52

Speaking of bronzing powders....

I got this out today 👇

I don't do well with bronzing powders as they all, without fail, look orangey on me. I use this, which is a Clinique product for men and lasts forever. You need a weeny bit, blend quickly and you can still see your complexion through it, rather than a bronze "top coat" sort of mask (which is why I personally avoid powders). Just if anyone's interested 😊

I layer my products after reading about it somewhere.
Serum, Mosture Surge, oil, moisturiser.

Also, there's a great video on You tube about the 7skin method and whenever I do it my skin feels really good.

OneGreyElephantBalancing · 28/04/2017 18:31

What is tight-lining ?

ElspethFlashman · 28/04/2017 18:39

It's lining your top lid but not in the usual place, rather underneath the lashes in the watery bit.

Makes your eyelashes look thick and makes your eyes pop without any visible liner.

Tom Cruise reportedly does it! Grin

Gah81 · 28/04/2017 19:47

Coconut oil on the ends of my hair before washing. Coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner (only on the ends) afterwards. I always used to get split ends very badly and had to get them all chopped off; this has really helped prevent them and my hair has been able to grow much longer as a result.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 28/04/2017 19:57

Honestly one of the best things I've ever done for my skin was to start hot cloth cleansing -properly- with an oily cleanser and a flannel rather than a mimsy muslin.
There are some people who can't get on with it, but the transformation in my skin was quite something.

Also whoever said conditioner with a wide toothed comb ( or a tangle teezer) - YES!

Thanks elspeth. Sounds hard!.

MaQueen · 28/04/2017 20:10

Always cleanse face with a good cream and a flannel wrung out in hot water - I use Ren Rosa Centifolia Hot Cloth Cleanser.

Never, ever put your face in the sun. I never have (thanks for the good advice Mum) and although I'm 46 I barely have any lines/wrinkles yet.

Get your teeth professionally whitened - it gives you a much fresher, younger smile.

For photos, always raise you chin very slightly to give you a firmer jaw line and wider looking cheekbones.

Snogging your DH makes your lips naturally pinker and poutier.

Have a signature perfume that others always associate with you.

Get your eyebrows professionally shaped - they really frame your eyes beautifully when done properly.

Always exfoliate in the shower (I use exfoliating gloves) then slather on body lotion while skin is still damp - my skin's silky smooth.

Have your forearms waxed during the summer. T shirts look better.

Ineedagoodusername · 28/04/2017 20:11

Ladyofthecanyon what cleanser product for you use and do you use just a normal flannel?

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 28/04/2017 20:13

Use hair conditioner on legs to shave them. The razor glides over your legs beautifully. So much better than soap.

MaQueen · 28/04/2017 20:13

Elspeth _ I have heard of this, I think it's called tight lining. But doesn't it immediately wash off because of the fluid in your eye?

ChickenVindaloo2 · 28/04/2017 21:25

Great thread!
Mine is - keep a baby's toothbrush (nice and soft) in your make-up bag. Gets rid of dead skin on your lips gently.

ElspethFlashman · 28/04/2017 22:00

You have to use a longwear eyeliner that sticks like glue. Even then it may stay put, but transfer a bit to the bottom watery bit when you blink.

I've done it in the past but found the difference too subtle to be worth the faff. Now I go the full cats eye - subtle be damned!

MusicToMyEars800 · 28/04/2017 22:09

cotton buds are fab for removing those pesky mascara dots that you sometimes get when applying mascara, just one twist of it and it's gone, with no smudges or black marks.

Rach6l · 28/04/2017 22:20

I have a lash perm & tint every few months. Makes your own lashes look like (natural) falsies.

Forget the thick eyebrow trend unless you're young - i think it makes older women look masculine.

falange · 28/04/2017 23:13

When applying those fake tans that appear gradually always mix them with body lotion in your hand. Much less chance of any streaking.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 28/04/2017 23:50

A lash perm? What witchcraft is this??

Ineeda I use any old cleanser to be fair. Cream is just as good as oil but my skin seems to like oil better.
I'm currently using up a massive pot of Emma Hardie moringa glop but just olive/jojoba/coconut oil works brilliantly. Massage in well and wipe off briskly with a cotton flannel soaked in hand hot or hotter water. The flannel helps with exfoliation and my skin loves it.

Use a silk pillowcase- makes your hair shiny and helps prevent those morning lines on your face.

Rose hip oil is very effective on neck crinkles.
