Is getting your haircut after 30 really that ageing?

I keep reading this on here. Am currently debating cutting off my tedious bob as am so bored of it. But have also hit my late thirties and am feeling old and shit about myself already and don't want an 'ageing' haircut!

You need a new hairdresser! One who listens and gets what you want and can actually do it!

But I do think short suits you. Until you can get a new appointment, get some product in it and mess it up a bit, push it back over your ears etc.

Haha possum I don't mind, I'm just moaning anyway 😂
She's been great so far so I'm surprised with this. And the pouffiness?! I think people assume as I've fine hair I must want volume. But I don't really mind which is why I want it short. Volume is of little interest unless I want it spiked up.

I've booked an appt with a friends who has awesome short hair. But I can't seem her until January boo.
Cheers for the positive thinking Margie, a shower and some wax will make it feel better I hope. I was quite nervous about going jean aeberg short but my reaction to this confirms I'm mentally ready at least.

Sorry to hear that you're disappointed with your haircut. I understand that you wanted to have a more drastic change. But - you do look great! I think it's a great in between haircut. But I also agree with the other posters, maybe go to a different hairdresser next time. And insist on going shorter.
I'm inspired - I have a ponytail as I can't be bothered by the regular trims, but used to have short hair and loved it!
I think I might have mine cut in the New Year. Thanks everybody for posting all those great pictures!

Hairdresser sounds a little off to me. Its up to YOU what you want surely? There are so many products and tools out there now I dont think fine hair / cowlick / whatever can be a barrier?

I just think some hairdressers are too timid and not confident enough to deliver big transformations, and will always just play safe :(

Short cropped cuts are rarely ever flattering. IMO

teolittleboys I think a shorter style would suit you. Hope you get more what you want with the next hairdresser.

Sorry for more photos but in the shorter ones you can see my big parting, I lost hair from here and it never grew back.
Then one with a longer fringe, which more or less covers my parting at the front.

Cara, do you mean really short like the Jean Seberg one, or just everything shorter than a bob?

Report
Cocolepew · 20/12/2016 14:22

Rubbish Cara.

I like bobs - even short ones. I liked the OP's original style, actually. The style she now has should definitely be given much more top volume.
The short styles I dislike are any that are layered and cut close to the head.

I have very fine hair and not a lot of it.
Of course you can have short hair!
I bloody knew you would have bother though. It took ages to get someone to cut my hair properly short.
I had very short hair throughout the 80s and I used to be a hairdresser!

It blonde now but this is when I had it pink

Namechangeemergency - I too have used the Jean Seberg picture!!

I've had my hair long, shaved at the sides, with a floppy Mohawk, shaved all over, pillar box red, platinum blonde and my natural browny brown.

I have it short now, and no dye at all - grey everywhere, and a badger like stripe at the front - at first some people who hadn't seen me for a while thought I was ill again (the last time I didn't dye my hair was when I was having chemo), but it actually feels lovely not to dye it, and it turns out looking the age you are is almost as rebellious as shaving your whole head as a teenager!

Obviously my facial tattoo garners a few stares......

I think, for me cara and maybe others too, that my face isn't pretty enough to worry about flattering it as regardless of my hair my face will always look the same. My hair is a crap feature as once passed about my ears it's just lank and hangs there regardless of the amount of product I do or don't use. I'd love streams of princess hair that I could plait and preen but my isn't up to the job. So whilst I'd like a cut that looks good I don't think I'll ever get one that actually makes me more 'attractive' if you know what I mean? Going very short, for me, is more about trying to match a style I used to have and would like back. I think. And also to not have to blow dry it to get it looking like hair.
In the flip side tho I do wonder if my face will look all moon like and huge if i go full jean seberg.

twolittleboysonetiredmum:

I think you have a lovely face and big eyes which I notice more in the first pic before the hair cut. But go for the shorter look if you have had it before. Nothing is set in stone.

I agree that bobs are a bit aging on anyone over 30. I suddenly realised that in the whole of my regular yoga class (about 35 women mostly in their 40/50/60s only about three didn't have a highlighted bob of some form or another and that included a wide range of ethnicities. I had been so proud of my lovely, shiny, flippy bob but I hate looking like part of a tribe so I am currently growing mine out and wearing it wavy with the intention of getting It long enough to have up-dos.

Of course if all the other post-menopausal types at the gym follow suit, then I will think again.
