I keep reading this on here. Am currently debating cutting off my tedious bob as am so bored of it. But have also hit my late thirties and am feeling old and shit about myself already and don't want an 'ageing' haircut!

I turned 40 this year.
I finally chopped off my boring bob and now have a short pixie cut (Think Michelle Williams).
Everybody agrees it suits me. I definitely do not look older because of it.

Cocolepew · 19/12/2016 19:16

I would start with a michelle williams or gennifer cut

twolittle for goodness sake I was expecting some haggard old trout from your posts! Grin

I reckon a shorter cut would suit you. You have lovely big eyes and a very young face.

You can obviously carry off blonde so you could go a shade or two lighter without too much drama.

InterchangeableEmma · 19/12/2016 19:26

you need Tilda Swinton hair. Bleach it to buggery. You've got a nice face, it's interesting. I don;t think you'd have any problem at all carrying off something less bland, face or personality wise. Anyway, bobs are bloody hard work.

These are the colours I use. The blondest ones.
I have mousy brown hair with red undertones so its harder to lift up than it looks.
These tints give me a great colour with no yellowness.

Tilda Swinton with bob, for reference. The shorter ones she has are such versatile cuts if one is brave. You clearly are.

Thank you

I agree with others that a michelle williams cut would be a good start and a bit blonder would look make it a bit edgier without going over the top

Mine started nearly 20 years ago as a very, very short michelle style cut, it went spiky over the next few years

You would definitely suit shorter hair

doctorboo · 19/12/2016 20:51

twolittle this is me tonight (in the lamp light) and at various stages of length. I take a pic of cropped Anne Hathaway with me to show what I'm after. It's been 3 months since I last had it cut and I don't like it any longer than this, I've had it short for almost a year.

doctorboo · 19/12/2016 20:59

I think you should go for it, I wasn't cropped hair for so long and even though not every cut has been amazing I'm looking at you hairdressers up my road I'm still pleased I've had it done. These are the pics I take with me.

Did you say you were looking for something edgy and have tattoos OP? (or was it another poster??) Anyhoooo what about something Ruby Rose-esuqe? I'm considering trading my 'lob' for it.....

Ooh thanks all! I'm feeling very inspired. Am really liking the tilda cuts, which look similar in style to those last photos too. I like the fact there's still a bit of hair to play with. Thanks for olia link too. Am off for cut at 9am, I'll report back. Hopefully I won't get talked down as I really don't want to come out with a shorter bob!

stand firm Grin

InterchangeableEmma · 19/12/2016 22:53

Yes, do stand firm.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 20/12/2016 11:21

Ffs that was predictable. I stood firm. She was firm. She's adamant that because of my fine hair and strong parting that if I go short it won't hold any of the styles I've showed her. I have a cows lick apparently whatever that is. So I've ended up with a crap halfway house. I hate it. I'll put a photo on in a bit when home. Argh!

Argh I hate hate hate it! Have bleach. Will that help it?!

It's not that different is it?
I have fine hair, I actually went very short after losing a lot of it, I have a strong parting and a cows lick.
Products were invented to hold your style. A decent hairdresser should be able to cut a short style that suits your hair.
Its not bad its just not what you wanted.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 20/12/2016 11:37

It's just a shorter choppier bob. Eugh.

This is shaved at the sides and back, my hair naturally parts to the left so thats the way I wear it. Theres no reason why you couldn't have a style like this (though you might not like it exactly like this).
Sorry you're not happy SadFlowers

Find a new hairdresser.

I have a cowlick too (basically a bit of hair at your hairline which wants to go a particular way and won't be told what to do). One hairdresser told me if I wanted any sort of fringe, they could perm the cowlick (I think??) to make it go the right way. Quite high maintenance though.

Are you willing to use product every day? As I think that's a given with short hair.

I would be edging more towards the Anne Hathaway/3rd Michelle Williams/Jean Seberg styles - i.e. a short pixie crop. I think they are less likely to fall into "mum hair" than the ones with the longer top/shorter sides. Also will work better for fine hair.

Cocolepew · 20/12/2016 11:52

My DD has the most ridiculous cowslick, I just cut her fringe very short when she had a pixie cut.
Like this.

I would say it's certainly an improvement, particularly in the pic in your bathroom where it's more tousled. Definitely more edgy than what you started with.

I find with hairdressers you have to be very explicit that you want something edgy, they assume that once you're over 30 you're looking for something classic.

I like Alba Rohrwacher's hair.

My hair looks a bit like this, and I have a cowlick. What stops is being frumpy is the broken up texture and the styling.

I'm watching this with interest.

I'm 40yo with waist length hair with no style at all. It's thick and frizzy and I just tie it up in a Croydon facelift type high ponytail every day.

I would love something funkier. But I have no time at all in the morning, ok maybe five mins. So I can't be spending ages styling my hair. How long does a pixi type cut take to style in the morning and also what specific products would I need? I had a really short cut years and years ago and didn't know how to style it all and ended up looking like a blokes short back and sides.
