Following on from the skincare routines post, what ingredients do you make sure you include in your products, for example, Vit C, Vit E, Hyaluronic acid?

TIA

user, I normally do say you need about six weeks to evaluate a product but an acid should be showing some effect a little quicker, however, your use of it wasn't very consistent. As you're not combo-oily it was perhaps not a good match, sample the other one and see how you get on. A topical clay mask 1-2x a week might help it along too.

Water is fine as a morning rinse if you're normal/dry and don't load up with heavy products the night before but I would urge you to try and keep your face as far away from shower water as possible. I know this is practically impossible but the flushing suggests you are sensitive to temperature and shower water tends to be too hot. Alternatively, shower with tepid water when doing the hair bit. I suspect you're also using an SLS shampoo which isn't all that great for skin as it's stripping, no fun if you're dry.

On account of the fine lines and hidden bumps I think you'd benefit from an AHA more, or perhaps and AHA/BHA combo. I also suspect you're a bit dehydrated (fine lines and the mention of tightness, Nivea a heavy occlusive not working for you, etc.), the Lush products don't really tackle any hydration issues, just dryness. I can't really comment on the serum bar as it's just a bit odd to me, never seen a product like it but I can't really call that a serum either.

You don't wear much makeup so a single oil cleanse should see you through fine but I do find double cleansing more beneficial when you suffer from blackheads. C&P and BB CO are similar though as they're both first cleansers (oil based to remove makeup/spf) so a bit redundant to use after each other.

I'd look towards building the following routine:

AM:

Rinse with water or a mild second cleanser like LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser

Hydrating Serum (the superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum, or possibly Asian, or The Ordinaries Buffet)

Moisturiser - use up your current one if it works for you and evaluate when it's nearly finished whether to RP. FWIW I don't really rate Lush as proper skincare, it's much more of a sensorial brand.

A separate SPF - the SPF in the Lush moisturiser really isn't cutting it.

PM:

Oil cleanser - if you like Clinique TDO balm go with that, the liquid version will probably be similar to the BB CO and probably a bit more economical in use. The Superdrug Vit E HCC and the Body Shop Chamomile CB are cheaper versions that are generally well liked.

Second (skin) cleanser - If you can find it easily in the UK, Decubal Face Wash might be of interest (it's like a Danish version of a French pharmacy brand, paraben and fragrance free and high in Niacinamide. Their Face Vital Cream is also worth a try). Good for drier and sensitive skin at a low pH (4.5) and I find a low pH foam better than cream cleansers when dealing with blackheads/pores. LRP Toleriane Dermo or similar otherwise.

Acid toning - as mentioned above. No surprise that I like p50 for AHA, the normal version has Salicylic in it too. Nip+Fab are worth looking at if you don't have fragrance issues.

Serum - whatever specific thing you wish to be tackling here.

Moisturiser/Oil

Mandatory disclaimer : slow and steady is the way to go here. Gradually introduce things with spaces of at least two weeks apart. Only with acids can a bit of purging be expected but otherwise an irritation or reaction is just that. Introduce acids slowly, 1-2x a week building up to every (other) day/2-3x a week.

I just received the €15 off from ICI too on top of the 25% off but can't seem to fill up my basket with enough stuff, first world problems. Any ideas Confused? Thought about getting another DHC cleansing oil but I still have a Muji back up so it'll be months before I get to it.

The palette I was eyeing at FU is sold out, I'm wondering whether I really need all those hair products but it's a 3 for 2 thing, much prefer a lower discount on the one item I actually need... I think I'm down to one item Sad

I fear this BF will be a bust...

I love those charity gifts too, to receive that is, not everyone likes to get those Grin. I'm notoriously a PITA to shop for as my tastes are very specific and I hardly ever need anything as I just go out and buy it or it's far too expensive to ask for as a gift. Much prefer suggesting those charities than having to hand over a detailed list of things and pretend to be surprised later.

My parents did that once, with the choosing. We chose Christmas too but were sorely dissapointed, we had to wait so much longer (and the whole day after at school when everyone shows off/talks about their gifts drove that home rather hard). We thought we'd get huge extravagant gifts as x-mas really is a thing we knew more from TV here than anything else and it was just the same stuff we'd get at Sinterklaas Shock.

For people/family abroad I just send really Dutch things and miscellaneous crap, people are strangely always very happy about stroopwafels, which I don't get at all.

AuroraPolaris · 25/11/2016 11:46

I just bought 100ML bottle of perfume from ICI, so it was enough to get the discount. Was in total just under 70€, so a very good price.
Maybe just get stuff you use anyway? Or that Chanel palette you've always lusted after? New foundation? Body stuff? I'm very very pleased with Chanel VLA, by the way. just don't blame me Grin
That is what I'm getting from LF. Hair stuff and so that I need to restock on anyway, though I'm annoyed cause I haven't ordered yet and it now seems that Nars Deep Throat (yes, I typed that name, again) is out of stock (though this morning it was there!)

Oh yeah, I know what you mean with the disappointed kids on 6th December... but there are so many mixed/ international families around us and at school, I think they'll survive.

hollinhurst84 · 25/11/2016 12:34

I've ordered the heimish all clean balm
And a new jumper
And the colourpop lipsticks
Must. Stop. Now Blush

EnidButton · 25/11/2016 14:10

Aurora Oh no that does sound bad. It's the thought of the lovely pearls being wasted and all the effort that's gone into it...aargh!

user1471503992 · 25/11/2016 14:16

Oh wow, thank you! I am going to look all these up and see what I can get hold of. Thanks for explaining double cleansing, I've never understood that you used different types of cleanser before. I'll definitely get the cleanser to start with and maybe a day serum and the new acid. That's incredibly helpful!

user1471503992 · 25/11/2016 14:18

I do use an SLS shampoo, I used to use Liz Earle shampoo but it started to make my head itch so I stopped - it made my hair really soft though. I don't like the current one at all as it's too drying so I'm going to hunt for a new one when this is finished.

botemp · 25/11/2016 14:23

Please don't take the above as a mandatory buying list. Go one or two products at a time.

IME a good SLS free shampoo (provided you don't load up like crazy with hair product) makes it a lot easier to wash less often. You're not stripping back so harshly so the oil production doesn't go berserk like with SLS shampoos. I used to do every other day and was getting pretty greasy mid day 2 but now can easily go 3-4 days without washing. It takes a while to find one you like at a decent price IME.

hollinhurst84 · 25/11/2016 17:28

My lip balm arrived, thank you! I am slapping it on

Pupsiecola · 25/11/2016 17:36

I've just realised I bought the wrong BHA from PC. I've got the anti redness one. Doh.

user1471503992 · 25/11/2016 17:36

I am torn between getting the cheap Superdrug serum and the exciting Ordinaries buffer. I managed to find the Decubal face wash and I'm sitting on my hands to stop myself ordering anything else or I'll be unable to resist trying it all at once.

By the way, for the poster whose kid has KP, I have that on arms and legs and spent a fortnight religiously slathering myself in Flexitol. It reduced the bumps but I still had red spots and it was horribly sticky. I then tried Lush Sympathy for the Skin and it had the same effect - smoothed the texture of my skin really well but sank straight in and didn't feel sticky hours later. I still had red dots with that too but no bumps and it was much nicer to apply. I agree with Botemp that Lush isn't really about skincare but that one really helped.

wiltingfast · 25/11/2016 17:57

That was me! Thanks user Smile it's calmed down a lot now, can see it but not really feel it too much. Poor thing seems to have it everywhere but some of it looks eczema-y. Will keep an eye.

I recently switched to an sls free shampoo and my hair, and esp Scalp feels way better. I bought bioderma node shampoo on impulse. It's vg. My hair is curly, v fine, thick underneath and thin on top. Lacks volume if left to itself god forbid

My previous apvita shampoo for thin hair had a v long list of stuff that wasn't in it...

Still had sls tho. Grr.

botemp · 25/11/2016 18:35

Pupsie, you used that one as a sample without issue though right? It might just be a good formulation for you (combo if I remember correctly and I believe the clear is also recced for rosacea).

Aurora, Nars' own website are having an offer of 20% off a special blush pallette, the Best Cheek Palette which has the DT in it along with orgasm, laguna bronzer, a highlighter and two other blushes. Probably less amount than normal but those things last forever anyhow. I'm considering it as I've avoided buying orgasm and laguna for forever and this looks like a really nice travel set.

Mind if I ask what they're charging for the Decubal Face Wash, user, (it's quite a cheap product here and would be good to know that it's one to recommend to people on a budget)?

botemp · 25/11/2016 18:40

Sorry meant to add, you need the code FRIDAYBLUSH for the 20% off.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 25/11/2016 20:04

Wilting I am in need of a new shampoo - do you rate the Bioderma? Has to be SLS free as it irritates my scalp. Using Ogx at the moment and not loving it.

What's the general consensus on Pixi Glow tonic? I bought some because everyone recommended it but I think it's still too much for my reactive skin!

user1471503992 · 25/11/2016 20:30

The Decubal was £9 but then tax was added plus nearly £6 delivery so I paid £17, which is almost double what I expected to pay. Never mind, it's still cheaper than the LRP one you recommended as an alternative, and it sounded like it would suit me. I need to go back to the start of this thread and read through the good ingredients again now I have an idea of what my skin might need.

Might try the Bioderma shampoo too!

botemp · 25/11/2016 20:42

I did not get on with Pixi Glow Tonic at all and it smells horrid too. It managed to both dry me out and sensitise me more. It's a real hit or miss product and considering the pH is not ideal for exfoliation, I don't really get the love for this product but accept some people like it.

Ok so not cheap as chips as it is here (under €10) then but under £20. Good to know, thanks user. considers exporting Decubal

AuroraPolaris · 25/11/2016 21:13

bo I'm going to pretend I didn't read your post about the NARS blushes

botemp · 25/11/2016 21:20

I'm having the hardest time checking out with paypal on there. Had to send an email to customer service about it as they seem to accept all the CC I don't own so can only pay with pp... The blushes/bronzer/highlighter are 3.5g each, the normal size is 4.5g so frustratingly it's a really good deal... but I fear I will miss out on it Sad.

Have now dangerously discovered I can get yearlong free shipping with Selfridges for €18 a year! This opens up way too many possibilities as that's the shipping rate per order and usually what holds me back... Nars is pretty cheap on there too if you disregard the shipping and 10% off beauty (20% off the rest) with the code.

AuroraPolaris · 25/11/2016 21:20

Enid I think you managed to describe my feeling exactly. In other words, a bloody waste!

Wilting sound like we have very similar hair - curly, fine and tends to go flat without help. I first stopped using SLS and silicones and switched to Weleda baby shampoo but then a few years ago just stopped with shampoo and now wash twice with conditioner. That and a few other little tricks have made a world of difference.

AuroraPolaris · 25/11/2016 21:35

Hmmmm I think I won't get that cheek palette- I have Mata Hari a deep pink a bit similar to the one there and I hardly use it. I also fear that Laguna will be too dark for me... and Orgasm I have and like you said those blushes last for years since they are so pigmented.

I haven't ordered yet for LF as I just came home...

EnidButton · 25/11/2016 22:34

At what stage does everyone put eye cream on?

Before or after serums, toners, moisturisers etc?

SheStoodInTheStorm · 25/11/2016 23:08

Thanks bo. Yes my skin goes red after using and was becoming dry in patches. I've stopped using it for now but do need some exfoliation! Any suggestions for reactive, mild acne prone skin?!

Also wondering what to do with the rest of the bottle Confused possibly even have a second somewhere!

I think the Tata Harper cleanser I have is aggravating my skin too.

botemp · 26/11/2016 09:22

Eye cream before normal moisturiser and after serum. If it's an eye serum then that before normal serum.

Well, Storm, it should come as no surprise that I recommend BR Lotion P50 Grin. I have a hard time reccing AHAs that aren't glycolic as there aren't that many, you can also look into mandelic/azelaic/etc. but if you're not getting on well with glycolic, lactic (ie. P50, starting with the W version) would be my preferred route. The standard P50 also contains salicylic and is much loved by acne sufferers, you have to build up to it though and you might just be too sensitive to ever move beyond the W version in which case you can always use PC BHA with it if using a BHA.

I've been meaning to look into PHA (a sort of AHA), Pupsie, were the acid pads from Neostrata you used PHA based? I think they're the ones with all the research and was wondering how you got on with those. They're supposed to be AHAs that are less irritating and better to use for sensitive types and also don't make you photosensitive. Also go by the following names:

Lactobionic acid (derived from lactose found in cow’s milk)- humectant, antioxidant and soothing.

Galactose (a sugar utilized in glycosaminoglycan and collagen synthesis, and cell migration)- may enhance wound healing.

Gluconic acid (a naturally occurring ingredient in cells) also known as gluconolactone.

Use the Pixi on the body, that's what I did not that it does much there. It'll stop ingrown hairs, make skin a bit smoother and the body tends to be more resilient than facial skin. Pass on the unused one to someone who actually uses it/likes it. It's a shame there isn't some pass it forward thread out there, I use MN all the time to destash Grin.

Which TH cleanser do you have? I liked some, though not the one with physical exfoliating particles in it, way too harsh as a daily cleanse. Also found CH a little off the money for suggesting they could all be used regardless of skin type, some were excessively dry whilst others far too rich.

AuroraPolaris · 26/11/2016 12:05

bo I also had payment problems at LF. Got a mail from them this morning that the order didn't go through, so I had to pay with card as well.

I only ended up getting the pillow spray and my conditioner as they wouldn't ship the small Serozinc over here and the Nars DT was sold out... And FU wouldn't ship the Nars DT over here. Angry

All in all quite an underwhelming BF, though I really did my best Wink

I've never used anything by Pixi, but agree with bo that that is quite a high price to pay for what they offer.
I have used Alpha-H Liquid Gold in the past though and did like it, but that is only for nighttime.
