How the style and beauty thread has changed over the years.

I was thinking about this the other night, about the trends in threads over the years.

When I first joined I remember learning about sock buns. I had a break for a long while, then it was all about skincare, Caroline Hirons, exfoliating toners, but that has tailed off recently. Now it seems to be about haircuts, particularly whether people should have a pixie cut, lots asking how to dress their body shape.

HOC and CMB thread still occasionally appear, as do bra interventions, but less than they used to.

Hoping this all makes sense, am slightly hungover 😀

What other thread trends do you remember?

I don't think it has changed much. Still all the wedding guest threads and at Christmas it will be sparkly tops, heels and Christmas day outfits.

The bag threads are always funny - the best was the lady who was being 'given' lots of chanel bags by her very new 'boyfriend'. She was funny.

Avid and wise used to be fun too.

Glamorousglitter · 10/07/2016 08:57

This has reminded me of so much, joined 2008, have been avid s n b watcher since. Posted on various treads on and off (though easily scared away).
Never got onboard with those peony and Moore bags, did order a zarchel in neon pink - dd (7) loves it now !

Had the mumsnet scarf, a boden coat (I loved then hated) ash boots
Love a good bag tread and a good mum boot tread and a good 'bum covering waterproof coat' tread Smile

longchamp Pilage bags were a big thing too for a time weren't they ? And saltwater sandals...

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 10/07/2016 09:07

I have actually just yesterday purchased the most amazing bum covering waterproof coat. I should start a thread.

ElaeudanlaTeiteia · 10/07/2016 10:00

Oh the Zatchels! Took forever to arrive, then sat on a shelf in my hall for 3 years before I finally got pissed off with it and bunged it in a charity sack. Too stiff, too unwieldy, held surprisingly little.

I got the dirt cheap Boden cashmere jumpers . Still got them, and the £29 fleece-lined duffle coat (not stylish but oh my god so cosy).

When I joined the Thing on here was OCM. So very many threads about it.

MadSprocker · 10/07/2016 10:05

Sock bun is when you cut off the top part of a sock and roll it down a ponytail to create a messy bun on top of your head. Like a donut, but less bulky, which helped with my fine hair Grin

I have bought the hush ruched skirt Blush

OP posts:
MadSprocker · 10/07/2016 10:06

What's OCM?

All the getting your colours done - this has been going on for years. Surely this is a complete con. When I look at someone stylish they don't adhere to these rules.
But I prefer the pasty look and accept I probably look rubbish in my black/navy uniform.

Diamogs · 10/07/2016 10:10

OCM = oil cleansing method I think?

Ifionlyknewthenwhatiknownow3 · 10/07/2016 11:12

Seem to remember 'long line vests'

AmberNectarine · 10/07/2016 20:34

MrsCB, I feel obliged to correct you. He wasn't a boyfriend on the Chanel bag thread, just a lonely, older rich guy with absolutely no ulterior motive whatsoever.

MrsCampbellBlack · 10/07/2016 20:49

True Amber. Why do I never meet men who just want to buy me multiple chanel bags Wink

AmberNectarine · 10/07/2016 21:00

Tell me about it. I would gladly keep a lonely old man company (purely platonically, natch) for a Boy bag.

I don't think S&B has markedly changed. As MrsCB says, it's still weddings in summer, sparkly tops in winter. We may put marginally different substances on our faces or slightly uglier sandals on our feet, but essentially the heart of it remains intact.

I am waiting for this year's school run dress thread. Maybe when summer bothers turning up?

bialystockandbloom · 10/07/2016 21:01

Ah I remember the discussions of the fleece-with-wolf-on monstrosities, and the birth of wolef. That was all very very very funny. But actually don't know if that was in s&b though.

Tanaqui · 10/07/2016 21:31

There was lots of analysis of the boden catalogue. Then the zarchels and sock buns. Then putting coconut oil in your hair. I suppose they are all still there somewhere!

FlamingoFling · 11/07/2016 04:00

More focus on the B and less on the S - it's all about what you put on your face and I'm marginally less fussed about that.

Love a school run dress thread - the outrage and general madness but of course that has does a death due to Miserable Fuckers™ and the slow decline into "lighthearted"

The US v UK working woman thread was brilliant, pages and pages of women who'd clearly never stepped foot in an office let alone a US office slating one of the main contributors who seemed pretty clued up on the topic

FlamingoFling · 11/07/2016 04:03

Like everywhere else on MN there is less fun. By which I mean banter and wit not a Biden print.

JackandDiane · 11/07/2016 07:39

Agree with all that. Plus you can't slag off celebrities any more

PrizeyPrize · 11/07/2016 07:47

Loving this thread. (Yes that's a place mark)

WhisperingLoudly · 11/07/2016 08:41

The faux offense on the celebrity threads is irritating.

I don't care for bitching about face/weight etc but if you get paid a zillion quid to attend a much photographed event in a shit dress expect people to say it's shit.

madmomma · 11/07/2016 09:07

Lol @ death by miserable fuckers

Merell coats; managed to resist that one, although I did get a random tube skirt from whistles in navy and I've never worn it due to having no clue what to put with it that doesn't look dowdy or officy.

madmomma · 11/07/2016 09:11

Ooh clarisonics, castor oil shite (fell for both those), next relaxed skinnies and the resulting parsnips, bra nazis, tunic and legging mocking (I am unrepentant), Isabel Marant worship, the boot obsession as soon as autumn arrives, ditto re perfect coats, endless boden codes...

YvaineStormhold · 11/07/2016 09:14

I bought a Peony and Moore bag. It was shit.

I sent of for Lilylolo samples. I looked like Miss Havisham.

I bought a Whistles tube skirt. I looked like something out of Gregory's Girl.

I love S&B, but it doesn't always love me Grin

YvaineStormhold · 11/07/2016 09:17

Oh and Chanel vitalumiere - I think jackanddiane recommended that. Gave me acne.

Impressed with Lipstick Queen Medieval, though.

JohnCheese · 11/07/2016 09:27

I dip in and out of S&B, I go thru phases. But I do remember the older generous platonic man friend and the Chanel bags was a great thread.

Agree it's more about the face, and I am also a bit less interested in that. I don't buy into the lotion and potion stuff (except Retin A)

I think it's a pity that there's a bit less room for, em, honest disagreement, here than there used to be.

Love the 'bra Nazis' Grin. They are right you know.

Floisme · 11/07/2016 09:27

Oh I can forgive S&B everything for the Whistles tube skirt. Best £50 I've ever spent.
