How the style and beauty thread has changed over the years.

I was thinking about this the other night, about the trends in threads over the years.

When I first joined I remember learning about sock buns. I had a break for a long while, then it was all about skincare, Caroline Hirons, exfoliating toners, but that has tailed off recently. Now it seems to be about haircuts, particularly whether people should have a pixie cut, lots asking how to dress their body shape.

HOC and CMB thread still occasionally appear, as do bra interventions, but less than they used to.

Hoping this all makes sense, am slightly hungover 😀

What other thread trends do you remember?

How to be posh, that was it. It was all 'how to get the horsey lifestyle' and lots of people giving really conflicting advice.

Which made for excellent reading.

AmberNectarine · 09/07/2016 23:07

I remember those peony & Moore bags were constantly recommended. I thought they were awful.

I also remember the 'ham arms' thread, but not sure if that was S&B or AIBU.

And, of course, the bag threads.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/07/2016 23:09

Didn't Peony and Moore close recently? What is the MN bag now?

I missed ham arms.

LaConnerie · 09/07/2016 23:13

I want to know more about the sock buns! Is it like when you use a pair of knickers to put your hair up in a rough knot to do your face, but then it looks wierdly good?

YouSay · 09/07/2016 23:13

I don't think it has changed. It has always been pretty unstylish to me and actually I don't picture Mumsnetters dressing like the S&B board e.g Clarks, Next etc

FankEweVeryMuch · 09/07/2016 23:15

I remember the ruched skirt obsession a couple of years ago, it had to me for me&em or hush. That had to be worn with an oversized knit (preferably in a cashmere blend) with a pair of ash jalouses on your feet.

Who remembers the thread about the Boden sale where cashmere jumpers were dirt cheap and everyone went made buying. Then most orders for cancelled. Mine was cancelled, I was #noyed.

squoosh · 09/07/2016 23:19

Oh there was the time everyone ordered a Zatchel satchel back in 1714 and they didn't actually arrive for another 200 years.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/07/2016 23:19

And the Soap and Glory foot file, we all bought those

But everyone's moved in to Footner now. Not me, I remain true.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/07/2016 23:20

I bought 3 Zatchels.

🐑

LaConnerie · 09/07/2016 23:24

Yes I remember getting sucked into the Zatchel buying frenzy. When it finally arrived i was 😕, it was big and bulky but I could get bugger all in it. It stubbornly lived in my wardrobe for about 100 years until I flogged it on gumtree at a huge loss...

squoosh · 09/07/2016 23:25

Ha Zebra, that's what I call committing! Grin

squoosh · 09/07/2016 23:26

Oh yeah I bought the foot file, used it once. Felt too much like hard work when Footner the brazen strumpet was wiggling her tempting wares in my face.

AmberNectarine · 09/07/2016 23:27

Yup, I've got a neon orange Zatchel I've used once.

I went to a lot of weddings sporting a sock bun c. 2011.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/07/2016 23:29

I still have my 3 massive yet not very roomy Zatchels, and my foot file.

Cos I am a massive hoarder
Not Hoarders Next Door tv show worthy. Yet...

TheSpottedZebra · 09/07/2016 23:29

Sock buns were dealt a bit of a blow by the Peru Two, weren't they?

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 09/07/2016 23:30

I have a mumsnet scarf! I still wear it actually but I always feel slightly worried someone will recognise it and think I'm a sheep. Even though it was 6 years ago that it was a thing.

I remember the zatchels too but I was too skint to buy one.

There was about 2 threads a week where people had fucked up the mn haircut but it was before you could put pictures into a thread so you have to go nosing on their profile so you could see.

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 09/07/2016 23:31

Oh and the babyliss big hair. I got one and hated it. It gave me newsreader hair.

Diamogs · 09/07/2016 23:52

Rocket dogs, baby bottom butter, Footner, oil cleansing, 10/10 although that might have been health rather than S&B.

I used to love the annual take the piss out of Per Una threads, and the predictable "surely you don't get dressed up to do the school run" on the annual SRD thread.

Missanneshirley · 09/07/2016 23:56

I still love my foot file!
What is a sock bun please?
Ash high tops seem to crop up every spring
Also lots of mockery of fly boots in the autumn

APotterWithAHappyAtmosphere · 09/07/2016 23:58

The perfume threads seem to be pretty constant. My favourite was when they discussed perfumes which smell of poo. I was strangely fascinated and intrigued!

Diamogs · 09/07/2016 23:59

Everyone was obsessed with Lily Lolo among other mineral foundations whereas IRL no-one I knew used them.

Along with lots of questions about Uggs and fitflops and were Pandora / Thomas Sabo Love Links bracelets common or classy. But I guess that is just reflecting trends in general.

Jackie0 · 10/07/2016 00:03

Was a sock bun a thing before the donuts?

HalleLouja · 10/07/2016 06:50

I remember the Fly London boot threads some of the probably started by me. But I never bought them in the end. Definitely remember the Bare Minerals ones which started me on foundation but now use a liquid one.

Also remember being a lemming and buying a bargain Wallis dress.

JackandDiane · 10/07/2016 08:12

2003 before style and beauty was a topic.
That's bollocks avoid skinny jeans though. S3 was born and I was wearing them in the pics

The scarf. Yup. Mum boots. School run dress. Fucking radley bags. Ew

JackandDiane · 10/07/2016 08:13

Baby bottom butter was a hoax. Person was taking piss and she couldn't stop !
