I was thinking about this the other night, about the trends in threads over the years.

When I first joined I remember learning about sock buns. I had a break for a long while, then it was all about skincare, Caroline Hirons, exfoliating toners, but that has tailed off recently. Now it seems to be about haircuts, particularly whether people should have a pixie cut, lots asking how to dress their body shape.

HOC and CMB thread still occasionally appear, as do bra interventions, but less than they used to.

Hoping this all makes sense, am slightly hungover 😀

What other thread trends do you remember?

Ha. I support the right of everyone to wear their 1950s dress with pride!

MrsCampbellBlack · 11/07/2016 18:13

Generally, I think clothes and fashion are just fun. Wear whatever you like. We all have different likes and dislikes.

However, on here the worst thing you can do is to admit to spending £££ or time on your appearance.

I recall many threads where there was the suggestion that if you cared what you looked like whilst being a mother of small children that you were basically letting them play with matches whilst you put mascara on.

I think it was marshabrady years ago who said it took just as much time to put something nice on as something horrid. Very wise.

AmberNectarine · 11/07/2016 19:32

Oh god, don't dig up that Chanel thread.

I had my morals called into question and e'rything.

QueenC1 · 11/07/2016 19:41

I love s&b but the same old subjects come up each year as others have said-christmas day outfit, Wedding outfits, bootcuts, mum boots etc.

I think on s&b you can admit to spending £££ on something but if it comes up on active convos and non regular s&bers see it they tend to hoik up the old judgey pants. Especially when it involves a handbag.

Trills · 11/07/2016 19:46

There are people nowadays who are ADULTS who have never known anything but skinny jeans.

They think anything else is exotic and "new" and exciting.

Trills · 11/07/2016 19:54

I would really like someone to link to the UK vs US officewear thread - I remember it but can't be bothered to search need someone to help me find it.

TheSpottedZebra · 11/07/2016 20:13

Was it this? ---> www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2346464-Dressing-for-work-in-an-American-corporation

(Trills, you're on that one)

midnightmoomoo · 11/07/2016 20:36

My favourite was the one about what to wear to a swingers club! It was such a good read, both hilarious and educational, best S&B thread I've read!

Trills · 11/07/2016 20:55

Thanks Zebra :)

Was that only 2015?

It is the one though, with the talk of $20k rolexes.

JohnCheese · 11/07/2016 21:05

Oh the swingers club one!! Hilarious! AND YES, so educationalGrin And went on for AGES. How it started in S&B baffled me.

bluebump · 11/07/2016 21:23

Just reading this shows how easily swayed I am!
BBH - tick
Clarisonic - tick (battery died after a few years, such a waste of money)
OCM - tick
MN haircut - tick
Baby bottom butter - tick

Longislandicetee · 11/07/2016 21:36

This thread has properly made me laugh. I love S&B for being uncontroversial and then read this thread and realise that I was heavily involved in most of the controversial threads named on here.GrinBlushI do think there is less controversy these days though.

Interesting to hear about those Peony and Moore bags - they really were all the rage, that I felt very uncool for not having one. Glad I saved my cash!

AmberNectarine · 11/07/2016 22:48

Does anyone remember Brian who offered us all fanny massages?

ForYourEyesYoni · 11/07/2016 23:04

Yes. And we changed our names to yoni ones in tribute.

NB Brian was in Hull. He told us this up front.

AmberNectarine · 11/07/2016 23:28

My favourite was YoniMitchell, but I like yours too ForYourEyes!

elliefredericksen · 12/07/2016 13:39

Similar to the Chanel bag thread, which I didn't read, but wasn't there a girl on a "show us your bag thread" proudly showing off her Birkin bags her OH had bought on eBay, only to be "politely" told they were all fakes? Or am I dreaming this?

Haven't seen a "show us your bag" thread since then I don't think.

I love/hate the constant use of the work "stylish" it's so very subjective and therefore meaningless. Especially the continual hunt for "stylish" and "waterproof" raincoats. You know the schools are going back when these threads start cropping up.

She was pretty snooty. She was also one of those people that I wondered might be playing a role.

polyhymnia · 12/07/2016 15:23

I'm afraid I did feel the same as margery and Crystal about Bonsoir. Her life was just so perfect and she always seemed to let us know it. Of course could just be envy on my part!

AmberNectarine · 12/07/2016 19:07

Bonsoir is still knocking around under a different NN. I quite like her - she shoots from the hip.

NattyGolfJerkin · 12/07/2016 19:12

I loved the style shop with cyb. Years ago. Moons ago. Oldies stuff. Pre s&b board, very early days of _chat. Lovely chats.

FlamingoFling · 12/07/2016 19:17

Also liked bonsoir I never thought her life was perfect but she has standards she liked met Grin

No idea who she is now though

notagiraffe · 12/07/2016 19:23

I remember starting a thread in the MN scarf days about wanting some long tees to hide my massive bum and being told by every single S&B queen that hiding makes it look worse not bigger, and to buy tops that stopped at the hip bone, and to chuck out the boot cuts as they make chunky women look like cart horses, and to get some skinnies instead. So I did exactly what they said, just out of interest, and got more compliments in one week than I'd had in years. Still stunned how people know this stuff.

polyhymnia · 12/07/2016 19:25

Nothing wrong with having standards, I agree. But I personally warm more to people who have some self awareness, self deprecation and humour too.

FlamingoFling · 12/07/2016 19:29

Like leQ who is currently being discussed on another thread bonsoir played up to the parody of herself. Occasionally I glimpsed a wicked sense of humour.

unless I'm sadly mistaken and she was in fact a bloody nightmare
