90s "bodysuits" or "bodies" are back!

They look to be in lots of the shops aimed at youngsters.

Memories of youthful fumblings!

They were so bad for VPL and fanjo health, and yet strangely comfy.

I had one, a tight black V-neck with pearly buttons, I loved so much I wore it until the lycra went side seams split.

Athrawes, that's looking a mite overly snug at the crotch area- it seems to be quite a narrow cut iyswim.

Woolyheads · 07/06/2016 22:01

Yay! So pleased. Always felt very sexy in one. Brilliant. Where can I get one? Or ten!

Mrsleighdelamare · 07/06/2016 22:34

Saw some in New Look this weekend and came over all funny.

I had loads too, including a cream lace high necked one. Yes, I walked out of some loos with the back bit flapping out, having totally given up trying to do up the tiny tiny poppers while half cut on Merrydown, and thought 'Oh fuck it'.Tucked it in to my nice high-waisted jeans but it still worked its way out.

You can't buy class like that.

dodobookends · 08/06/2016 00:18

I remember them well. In the days when I had a waist Grin

donajimena · 08/06/2016 05:22

I remember doing the side slide in a popper free version. Unfortunately owing to my inebriated state I didn't slide it nearly enough and ended up inflating it with a good three pints of recycled Stella.
The lycra content held in the liquid so well I had to drain it. Blush
so its a no from me even though I don't drink anymore.

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 08/06/2016 08:41

I think I'll pass on this one too. Why is it that so much of women's underwear is so damn inconvenient to get out of, unfasten, etc? Or is that maybe the idea?

IPokeBadgers · 08/06/2016 10:40

Ah this thread has made me smile: I had a couple of bodies "back in the day" [teenager in the 90s]. To be honest, I barely had the body for it then but just about got away with it - it think. Mostly black ones, worn with jeans and floaty silk shirts....happy memories, although not so pleasant remembering the contortions required when trying to refasten the poppers after a trip to the loo....the description of being like a human pinball in the toilet cubicle after a few pints is spot on!

20 years and 4 stone later - I cant even blame having kids sadly - this is one look I wont be re-embracing! As somebody said upthread, I just wish I was as fat now as I thought I was then.

starfishmummy · 08/06/2016 10:49

I loved mine back then but am definitely too fat old to revisit the look.
I used to get them from m&s and iirc they used to do regular and long ones - used to get funny looks buying them because although I am short I have a long body and they were the most comfortable. I didn't wear knickers with mine but wore them over my tights (and no, I didn't get thrush).
The only ones I didn't get on with had buttons rather than poppers! Not only hard to do up but uncomfortable to wear.

Zaphodsotherhead · 08/06/2016 11:40

Mine came from Next Too (I think), a sort of Next factory shop. I used to do that weird 'run' when caught short in it... a sort of crabwise shuffle whilst grabbing at my crotch in an attempt to undo the poppers before I actually hit the loo.

Yep. Never again.

lurkingfromhome · 08/06/2016 12:34

I had an olive green metallic-y one from Next to Nothing (another Next outlet type place). I would wear it with stonewashed baggy-ish high-waisted jeans - actually the sort of jeans that today would be called "mom jeans" but back then were just "jeans" Grin. It was as tight as you like and must have looked fantastic - all that shimmery lurex stretched to buggery over my generous norks.

Obviously the look was finished off with Huge Hair, scrunch-dried with the diffuser, that made me look somewhat like Charles II. How I ever managed to pull is really beyond me ...

Ah, the early 1990s ...

IdStillRatherBeKnitting · 08/06/2016 13:20

I love you all!

I'm guessing the 'never again' bunch of us are approaching, or just the other side of 40! (Two months to go for me). Ahh, the memories! Loo cubicle pin ball, spot on!

Mine was a high neck black one with way too much lycra in, paired with similar black tights, heels, and a ridiculously short Ralph Lauren kilt! Pulled in this outfit every time! I can nearly get into the kilt again (why? I'll never wear it outside again, but will never part with it either) after shedding 2 stone. The body won't be worn again.

TradGirl · 08/06/2016 13:31

I wore mine with a suede mini when I was flat of stomach

Yes, good times, trying to do the poppers back up in a nightclub toilet cubicle. Some fashions should be allowed to slip quietly into the history books!

TradGirl · 08/06/2016 13:32

Dona your beer bag body made me laugh :o

liquidrevolution · 08/06/2016 15:37

I remember buying my first one from Oasis in Ealing. I had never heard of Oasis before. The body was grey with chevronny detail and tight fitting.

I honestly cant see the point in them now, esp. as I always needed a bra with them. Just wear a top and knickers, much easier in the loo.

WiseToTheLies · 08/06/2016 16:05

On the upside, things have moved on in minge management since the 90s

I snorted at this! Brilliant.

I had loads. I used to wear them to clubs which was fine until I'd had a few and had to wrestle with the damned crotch poppers in a dark cubicle after several Hootches.

leedy · 08/06/2016 16:28

Oh God, another long-torsoed person who is NEVER GOING BACK THERE. They used to nearly cut me in half and completely flatten my boobs. And, as aforementioned, the popper/loo horror.

Despite this I had at least two of the bloody things - a sort of oatmeal coloured one that I wore with a tan suede mini, and a black one that I wore with a denim mini.

Now they just remind me of the popper-under-the-nappy vests worn by babies...

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 08/06/2016 17:05

Those were the days! I actually got so fed up with one of these, despite it being a favourite, (white with lace edging) that I decided to do a bit of an alteration. As I'm fairly nifty with a needle and thread I cut off the crotch part and hand-hemmed it thus turning it into a camisole. It wasn't too hideous as I recall but of course as the undercarriage bit was removed the damn thing kept on riding up and going wrinkly round the hips, so it was rubbish. It soon found its way to the rubbish bin.

TheMightyMing · 08/06/2016 17:50

I've got two lovely long sleeve ones from M and S. I'd like a nice short sleeve one in black nice quality if anyone has seen any?

Ellybellyboo · 08/06/2016 21:04

I took 14 year old DD to Stratford Westfield at the weekend. The place was awash with them.

I had several of them at one point, and yes, the fumbling with poppers in toilet cubicles when pissed was always interesting

DD didn't really get the point of them. I had to agree to be honest Grin

AddictedToCoYo · 09/06/2016 05:37

They were very handy for impromptu sex while standing up and fully clothed though. Providing you weren't wearing trousers, obviously.

They weren't very flattering for the large of nork as they didn't have proper bra cups and had that horrible effect dragging your boobs downwards like badly fitting swimming costumes.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 09/06/2016 08:55

Going through some old photos last night stumbled across one of me, in what must have been the early 90s, wearing a white scoop neck one, frayed cut-off Levi 501 shorts, black tights and Dr Martens. Seem to remember wearing variations on that a lot.

The thing is, if you substitute smarter shorts and a proper top, I still do that look sometimes Hmm!

101handbags · 09/06/2016 12:16

Memories of uni in the early 90s. Union disco. Snakebite and black, coming home stinking of smoke with ringing ears. All the girls wearing rolled up 501s, Argyle socks, DM shoes...and a body.

ThornyBird · 09/06/2016 15:57

101 ah yes, me too. Although my uni was too posh to have a union, we had a Guild Grin

Lurleene · 10/06/2016 00:46

Oh my word, this has brought back a bad memory. I had a few in my youth including a white lacy number that was a bit on the small size. I wore it to a house party and went to take it off only to find that once I had undone the poppers it would not come off. My skin small bits of my flaps had pushed through the lacy holes and cut off my circulation thus swelling up . Every time I pulled on the gusset I was literally ripping my bits off. Blush

My bits were eventually saved by my friend smuggling in a pair of scissors from the kitchen drawer and cutting me out of it. I would love to say we never spoke of this again but she has brought it up several times over the last 20 odd years.

The most bizarre thing was that it was a present from my then boyfriend so I didn't want to get rid of it. Instead I inexpertly sewed in a patch to cover the damage and protect my poor fanny, and I continued to wear the damn thing.
