I'm wearing each item in my wardrobe to see if I still like it

Today is an Xmas gift from my DM. On paper, it should work. It's a dark and flowery dress - scuba material, and I tend to love anything floral

In reality, it rides up with every step I take and the armholes are funny

It's gone after today!

Anybody else want to join me?

I decided to consign the heart jumper straight to the charity bag in the end, without even putting it on!

Instead I'm wearing a cotton knit long jumper/dress thing. I'm a bit torn:

  • I'm only at home, so I can't tell how I'd feel if I wore it out to work or wherever.
  • It's not WOW but it fits and it's nice.
  • I haven't worn it much and it wasn't super-cheap.
EquinoxBloom · 24/05/2016 11:48

In a surprise move I'm keeping the electric blue cardi.

It looks crap done up but undone its quite a useful little cover up for summer.

I've also got on some navy trousers with a bit of an elasticated waist thing going on Blush - a bit jeggingsy. With a long top to cover up the hideous waistband the legs part is actually quite flattering.

I just got one of those wardrobe apps where you take a photo of everything you own. Originally I had a free one called Pureple then at the weekend I bought Stylebook.

The good thing is the photos can be edited, resized and layered to make up outfits. You can also add photos to the calendar to see what you wore, and it has great statistics showing most worn etc.

The disappointing part is I don't think the search/filter function is as good as the free app Confused

ModerateBecomingGoodLater · 24/05/2016 12:21

Jacket: utterly badass and flattering. Staying.
Safe grey trousers? Hideous. Even if I only ever wore them with long / tunic tops they are now too baggy. Bin!

Nude heels: scruffy, but serviceable for this year. On the list for sales / bargain hunting to replace.

BabyGanoush · 24/05/2016 12:32

I chucked out a cashmere jumper that and shrunk and was clinging in a bad way to my rolls of fat and riding up exposing my tim when I walked (yes, THAT small!)

I still had a tiring inner debate about it though:
Voice of Reason: It must go, it does me no favours and I'll never wear it again!
Inner Hoarder:- But it's cashmere!! It is soft and lovely and cashmere is not cheap
Voice of Reason: It has shrunk, you look awful in it
Inner Hoarder:-But it was nice when it was new
Voice of Reason: not relevant now
Inner Hoarder:-You can't throw a cashmere jumper away!
Voice of Reason: You can donate it to your favourite charity shop, it might make them some money
Inner Hoarder:- but but but, it is White Company and I love that brand and maybe if I wash it again and stretch it really well it might fit again
Voice of Reason: Ok , do it then, wash it now. Handwash it now.
Inner Hoarder:- But I've got no time, and it probably won't work as it's shrunk a lot Sad
Voice of Reason: -FFS woman, put it in the bag!
Inner Hoarder:-- ....ok Sad

It is mentally exhausting! Anyone else have this?!

ModerateBecomingGoodLater · 24/05/2016 12:38

Yay, go equinox and the cheerful cardi!

SapphireStrange · 24/05/2016 12:48

Baby, YES a thousand times. Which is partly why I avoid and put off doing wardrobe clearouts, and end up with a clothes mountain. Grin

EquinoxBloom · 24/05/2016 12:50

Ganoush the mental image of you in that jumper made me guffaw.

It's not really warm enough for the cheerful cardi. My arms are cold.

I'm going to push on through though

drspouse · 24/05/2016 15:28

Oh yes exactly the same! I have made a cushion cover from a shrunk jumper but then decided I don't need any more cushion covers.

Today I'm wearing a summer-ish dress (what is that chevron knit style called? Is it Missoni?) which is a tiny bit thin and clingy to wear without trousers, and cropped dark blue leggings. The leggings are really practical but very baggy now. So I think I will replace them. Looked in a couple of shops this afternoon but no luck yet.

I've packed several summer dresses for my work trip. Why is it that having carefully checked my legs every day because it will be hot where I'm going, to see if I needed to book a wax, they were fine up until this morning.
I am not going to have a wax while away and I hate shaving but I could buy some Veet at the airport I suppose.

CointreauVersial · 24/05/2016 18:10

Grin at BabyGanoush. I get particularly stressed if I have to throw out something that would be perfect if it wasn't for the fact that is has shrunk/bobbled/snagged. As if hanging onto it is going to retore it to perfect condition somehow!

Today I have dug out a top I had completely forgotten about - and it's lovely! It's a pale pink gypsy-style blouse from Next. I spotted it in the sale many years ago, having admired it on a colleague (I then had to wait two years until she left the company before I could wear it at work Blush). It has wide elastic at cuffs and hem, and goes perfectly with a black scuba pencil skirt with pink digital print flowers, and black sandals.

It is, however, just starting to snag a little (the fabric catches on rings etc) but I will certainly get a little more wear out of it.

Detailsoverleaf · 24/05/2016 18:44

The DVF dress is staying and has been relegated into the workwear section of my wardrobe so I will actually wear it now.

Tomorrow is a pencil skirt and blouse, with a blazer, scarf and flat pointy loafers.

SapphireStrange · 24/05/2016 18:53

Good to hear, Details!

I think I'll keep my jumper dress. The stakes are not very high though as I've been working at home all day and only seen a delivery man.

He didn't offer a compliment, or laugh, or run for the hills screaming. I can take that as a cautious endorsement, I think. Grin

Tomorrow the weather's meant to be cooler, so I'm going to dig out and wear a skinny-knit wool jumper from a sample sale that I don't think I've ever worn. I suspect it'll be a bit like Ganoush's riding-up cashmere number as it's slightly skimpy. Grin

Ememem84 · 24/05/2016 19:18

The velma dress went. In the charity shop/ebay bag.

Today's outfit was a black and red floral pencil skirt, white tee and black cardigan. Black flats. I like the skirt. But the lining needs cutting up a bit to shorten. It kept showing below the hem of the actual skirt.

Tomorrows outfit - coral pencil skirt, black sleeveless top (with lace panelling on top - high neck) black courts.

whirlygirly · 24/05/2016 21:46

Ooh I started this today. Boden silver print top was a keeper but a pretty white company top I tried on nearly throttled me and needs to go.

I've also been ruthless with trousers, I had lots of wide legs which looked so dated. They've all gone straight to the charity shop. No messing.

Last year we had to move Into a much smaller house for the summer. It was the best thing ever as I just took a capsule wardrobe of things I love. About 5% of my actual wardrobe. Blush

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/05/2016 22:14

I tried on some black trousers today that I haven't worn for ages because they were too small. They now fit reasonably well, but I have discovered that I have NO SMART TOPS. Well, I have one, but it never gets worn because it hangs down like a bag from my boobs. I am keeping it because it is a nice blue with v embellished bits around the neck and shoulders, but to wear it I need a plain black or grey pencil skirt to tuck it into. I am still dithering about the trousers too - I moved into a smarter office and I'm not sure if I can get away with a plain cardigan over a black vest. So this plan has resulted in me trying on 2 items I haven't worn in ages, deciding to keep both, but also deciding that I need more clothes to make them work. Sad

Where do I find smart work tops? It is a definite gap in my wardrobe.

whirlygirly · 24/05/2016 22:20

My work top today was a boden ravello. I have others from whistles, French connection and Great Plains. Occasionally monsoon and white stuff in summer ( their plainer pieces!)

I also wear a lot of plain jersey dresses - I have about 5 from the white company ( always in sale!) that I alternate with a cardi, blazer or scarf for work with heeled nude courts or smart sandals if v warm.

ModerateBecomingGoodLater · 24/05/2016 22:26

I'm rather impressed by how stylish you all sound.

I've just packed to go away for a work course. I'm not being at all adventurous, but very minimalist and only taking stuff that really works. And running kit!

Ememem84 · 24/05/2016 23:03

Oasis and warehouse have some nice tips for work.

hippiedays · 25/05/2016 01:39

Today I have binned a white vest top that I had already relagated to being a 'layer'. Realised my mum tum made it more of a crop top so it was binned.

Met a friend for wine tonight and tried an old Warehouse skirt that has survived many wardrobe culls. It is a simple a line skirt but while it fits, my taste from ten years ago is now very different. It is now in the charity shop pile.

TobleroneBoo · 25/05/2016 07:22

I am very impressed with the progress you are all making and agree with a pp, you all sound so stylish.

Today I have a new cropped white jumper on over a grey pencil skirt, skirt is high waisted so (hopefully) no midriff showing. I feel quite comfortable at the moment but as is the nature of this project, time will tell!

Detailsoverleaf · 25/05/2016 08:29

Pencil skirt already annoying me! Fits round the hips but too loose around the waist. Twists round when I walk. It's going in the charity bag.

BestBeforeDate · 25/05/2016 09:39

Right, back from holiday, so I'm starting this too.

Yesterday I wore a caramel coloured top I was on the verge of throwing out as it never looked quite right - I always wore it with dark denim jeans. Yesterday, with a new pair of chinos I'd bought for holiday, and a bit of a suntan, it looked great! Result.

Today I'm in work, in a pair of brown trousers I bought in a panic as I needed some non-black trousers. I've never really liked them and they're only just long enough. I'll see how I feel about them by the end of the day but I think they might get the push. Also wearing a Boden leaf print shirt which I really like, but is a little tight across the bust and doesn't have much stretch in. Again, I'll see how much it irritates me over the day and see if there's anything I can do to alleviate the problem (other than losing half a stone!)

SapphireStrange · 25/05/2016 10:20

I don't even know what 'smart work tops' are. Confused Can someone post a pic of a couple?

I haven't put my 'keep or chuck' jumper on yet. I'm still in my yoga gear. Blush Must get off my arse!

ModerateBecomingGoodLater · 25/05/2016 12:24

On changed my mind about the safe clothes for the work trip, and am test driving a pair of Navy chinos I got 2nd hand. I've never been 100% sure of. They are OK so far. Bit baggy!

EquinoxBloom · 25/05/2016 12:56

My keep-or-go pale blue shirt is staying today.

I'm wearing it with my navy ruched skirt and navy pumps. I look a bit like a pony mum but it's flattering and comfortable.
