are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

Have a look at Lands End. I also have long body short legs, and some of their stuff comes in longer lengths which work vastly better on me than standard lengths.

I do the leggings thing for comfort and convenience, too, and try to make the dress or tunic a bit more fun. I don't feel frumpy! Some dresses I would never wear with leggings, though. Floaty tea-dressy things, for example. I'd rather wear nude tights with those (I do not do bare legs. Uh-uh-uh.)

Floisme · 14/05/2016 09:20

I still think if the skirt is too short for bare legs, it's too short, full-stop.

I partly agree with Dowager. Leggings/footless tights don't make my thighs look any slimmer and I don't see them as an excuse to wear a shorter dress than I would normally. But they're useful for camouflaging prominent veins, discolouration, crinkliness etc (as would ordinary tights). And - as we keep saying - they help you keep warm on an average summer day in northerly UK

iMogster · 14/05/2016 10:12

Leggings under a dress is Frumpy. Fact.
And black leggings under summer dress is the worst colour.
Either it's warm enough for a dress or wear something else.

Hmm, well, there is arguably something sheep-like about the devotion to leggings. It wasn't ever thus. Wink

Threads like this make me look forward to the day when anyone still in skinnies and a stripy top is getting the sneer treatment. I give it 2 or 3 years.

Vaara · 14/05/2016 13:32

It's not fact though is it? Fact.

It's opinion. Fact.

Hmm
Vaara · 14/05/2016 13:33

He he today I'm wearing skinnies, a seasalt Breton top, ballerinas and a Joules gilet.

I am a living, breathing mummy cliche and I look da bomb

MaisieDotes · 14/05/2016 15:26

It's warm enough for a dress where I am but you'd probably need leggings underneath. Fact.

I am wearing something else. Leggings.

Tribblewithoutacause · 14/05/2016 21:18

I wore Jeggins today, and a breton top. My sparkly converse really lifted it though.

Ignore anyone saying "in their opinion....."and then implying its a naff combo as they really mean they don't suit the leggings/dress combo themselves - I don't think they mean you are a fashion disaster :-/ Anyway, its my choice of "fashion" too!!! I am 5ft 8 and apple-shaped but in a triangular way ie slim arms n legs attached to a triangle!! So, a dress/long tunic/leggings combo actually balances out my figure so I look slightly more hourglass - does that make-a the sense?!!!!?!!!!!!!!! No excuse that I'm heading towards a size 20 though - oh dear!!!! I am with you on the maxi dress look - Ive tried on loads but I look like a sack of spuds for some strange reason ie I lose any sign of a figure and look just like a fat up-turned oblong instead (which also has the dire effect of making my slim arms look like twigs which I borrowed from the nearest tree!)

GertyTheGert · 14/05/2016 23:50

Oh dear, countess, for me leggings WERE for ever thus! I have worn them on and off since pre Siouxie and the Banshees / Poly Styrene - is that @ 1975/76?!? But obvsly with different fashion items in those far off days!!! And with hair in a ponytail tied up with lace ribbons in a pre-cursor ito Madonna's togs in Dsprtly Seeking Susan!!!!!! :-)

LilQueenie · 15/05/2016 00:11

Ive just started to wear the dress/leggings combo and I am known for my hatred of wearing dresses. Either a dress or a long top would work. Dont worry so much what others think. Wear what you feel works for you.

Whyarethebestnamestaken · 15/05/2016 09:12

I am starting to feel a little bit better about wearing leggings/tunics after reading all this. From wearing them just around the house I need to find the confidence (and better quality/longer tops) and wear them outside.

Thanks, I agree wear what you want but when you feel so self conscious but want to be comfortable it is hard to do.

I am also looking into leggings with longline vest and cardi combo as I also need to cover my arms, at least to the elbow.

Branleuse · 15/05/2016 10:05

they might not cover up legs any more than tights, but they dont make holes at the toes like tights, and they dont show off your pants if you bend down like tights.

They also mean i can wear dresses as tunics once ive managed to shrink them as I always do. I wear dresses all year round, and its only on hot days in the middle of summer that I go leggingless. I have cropped ones for spring and autumn and lukewarm days, and then thick heavy ones for the other 9 months of the year

are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?
RonaldMcDonald · 15/05/2016 11:14

This is terrible

Winterbiscuit · 15/05/2016 11:44

She looks fine, nothing wrong with her outfit!

DerelictMyBalls · 15/05/2016 11:49

I don't think anyone wears leggings because they think they are the stylish option. People wear them because they are cheap, comfortable and cover your legs.

PissedOff1 · 15/05/2016 11:51

A long tunic top with leggings is fine and can look fashionable with a pair of coloured brogue shoes or something to trend it up a bit. Also cropped trousers or culottes are very fashionable at the moment you could wear 3/4 wife leg culottes with a nice pair of sandals. Summery and very fashionable! Also look great with heels.

lljkk · 15/05/2016 17:13

Tights get runs in them & aren't actually warm. Tights work out as very expensive because they get damaged so fast. And tights are see thru so not good if skirt flies up or riding a bicycle.

Tights are just about acceptable for standing around ladylike at a warm wedding reception (or conference hall), having been chaffeured there in a warm car & not expecting to move around very much.
