are dresses with black leggings unfashionable?

I'm tall and don't like my legs from the knee up, searched the Internet and can't find any dresses that are long enough, I don't suit skirts or maxi dresses so planning on getting through the summer wearing dresses with black leggings underneath. Is this terrible? Or ok? I wore this style throughout my pregnancy but could defiantly get away with it then.

It's perfect leggings-and-dress weather today. I'm very tempted post gym.... might even upload a photo Wink

and the diff between leggings and footless tights is--??
I also wear leggings+ dress/tunic all year round and feel good in them as great for cycling and walking.

cakedup · 16/05/2016 11:09

I'm genuinely confused by a lot of these replies! I'm a leggings and dress kind of girl and never thought of this look as frumpy or mumsy. I don't really go for convention either, am known for being uniquely stylish. I either wear stuff inspired by vintage, 40s/50s etc or go for a more rock, slightly indie student style. I'm 43 BTW.

And for whoever mentioned living in the city and it not being something students wear, I live in London and did a degree at a London university recently, and I saw plenty of students rocking that look!

KnitFastDieWarm · 16/05/2016 11:32

I like leggings and dresses. I'm comfy, I think I look good, I feel like 'me', and I don't give a toss what other people think about what I wear.

JackandDiane · 16/05/2016 11:38

Student look Like laundry on radiators. Not chic

Ha! I know this one. It was explained to me on a previous thread.

Footless tights: opaques with the feet cut off. Still have that funny bit (sorry, can't remember the name) at the top of the leg so for dresses and skirts, def not tunics or long tops. Not always easy to find but I quite like them. They're my way of saying, 'Yes I know it's summer but come on people, it's cold'.

Leggings: woven fabric, often with seams. No transparent bit, harder wearing.

blinkowl · 16/05/2016 12:32

Last time we had this chat on MN I came to the realisation that the people who are anti-leggings and dresses are aiming for a level of grooming and sophistication in their casual wardrobe that I have no desire to achieve!

And I am very comfortable with that. :)

Dresses and leggings make wearing a short dress possible for those of us who suit that shape but either don't have the legs for it, or like to be active without worrying about showing the world our nether regions so leggings work better than tights.

Detailsoverleaf · 16/05/2016 12:43

I don't like the look. It was 'trendy' years ago but now I think it looks scruffy/frumpy.

I wear tights for work (black or nude depending on season) or trousers.

For casual wear, I wear thick tights with boots in winter but would never wear leggings or tights past April/May, depending on weather.

This time of year I wear either jeans or if it's warmer a dress or skirt with bare legs (touch of fake tan). If you want to hide your legs, or bend over a lot, I think a nice maxi skirt or linen trousers look much better than dress & leggings.

Floisme · 16/05/2016 12:46

Yeh cos linen trousers never, ever look scruffy Grin

motherinferior · 16/05/2016 12:48

Leggings re a jersey fabric, not woven! Knitted.

Today I am wearing a pair of cotton jersey churidar which are effectively leggings, and a long white broderie cotton top. I am about to take two dresses I got in the local charity shop - one silk, one silk-mix velvet - to be altered to fit me. I shall almost certainly wear them with leggings. Possibly not chic, but striking the sort of Toast-style note that I like, and suits me, and I feel happy in. Also madly comfortable.

I'm nearly 53. Too old to try to look like a Lady.

Floisme · 16/05/2016 12:50

You're right, not woven!

blinkowl · 16/05/2016 12:53

"If you want to hide your legs, or bend over a lot, I think a nice maxi skirt or linen trousers look much better than dress & leggings."

See that's what I mean! You're definitely looking for a level of sophistication I have no desire to achieve.

I'm not going to wear linen trousers for casual wear because linen gets so creased. I only wear clothes that need ironing for work or best.

A maxi skirt is a nice idea, but long skirts don't suit my shape. I am overweight, but with relatively slim legs - the lower half anyway! A short dress and leggings (or tunic and jeans, or floaty top and skinnies) suits my shape.

A maxi-skirt makes me look even bigger, and anyway it's still going to be a pain and get in the way a bit if you want to be really active.

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 12:58

I don't see how leggings hide your legs. They draw attention to them, they're now black and Lycra clad!

I wear either nude tights or bare legs in the summer. In fact I always eagerly await until it's warm enough for bare legs, it is blissful.

Floisme · 16/05/2016 12:58

Really must go in a minute but what about leather leggings? Are they acceptable? Helmut Lang seems to think so. And Me and Em. And Baukjen.

No don't tell me..... 'too try hard'.

FutureGadgetsLab · 16/05/2016 13:00

Not a fan personally but they're better than Lycra!

ILoveCwtches · 16/05/2016 13:07

If I'm not wearing jeans, I'm in a dress with black leggings or one of those stretchy tube skirt things with.....you've guessed it, black leggings!

I'm a Mum, I'm early mid thirties but I would not describe myself as frumpy. It's only very recently (last 6 months or so) that I've decided I'm comfortable to wear what I want to wear and sod everyone else. A few months ago, some of the negative comments on this thread would have had me doubting myself but I'm happy to say, I've not been swayed.

Love my leggings! And jeggings.

Winterbiscuit · 16/05/2016 13:22

Maxi skirts do look nice, but I wouldn't wear a maxi skirt for most of the things I'd do in a day, such as cycling to the shops, cleaning the loo, playing football in the park etc. It would get in the way and I'd just keep tripping over it!

QuimWilde · 16/05/2016 13:44

DD is 18, 6ft tall and a size 14/16 and dresses with leggings are her standard look. She never looks frumpy, she looks gorgeous. Loads of her friends dress the same way, as do the students at uni.

I wear my dresses with leggings too - absolutely nothing wrong with it. Wear what you want to wear.

I could've written this Grin

Just wear clothing folks. You'll be arrested if you don't.

End of my concern over fashion statements.

I wear tunics with leggings (the thick ones with seams), dresses with leggings, maxi dresses, maxi skirts and all sorts of unfashionable clothing. I turn up on the school run with unbrushed hair, though it's long so running fingers through it works well. I get loads of compliments on how well turned out and smart I am. I don;t feel frumpy, or mumsy though that might be because I am a frump and a mum and I'm lost inside a whole new persona that I'm oblivious to. I'm 44 if that makes any difference

Wish I had worn leggings yesterday. The knee length skirt wasn't warm enough once the sun went in.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 16/05/2016 16:09

She never looks frumpy, she looks gorgeous
At 18 she would probably look gorgeous in anything - why dress herself up in mumsy garb?

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 16/05/2016 16:12

My day to day wardrobe is leggings and a dress. My thighs rubs. fat or thin they just do. Leggings solve the issue without having to apply so much vaseline I look like I'm ready for the sli[ n slide.

I have purple, navy, grey and black leggings. I'm mad enough to wear purple leggings with a green dress. In fact I am of the belief the more the colours clash the better it looks. Like I've put effort in but not really ;)

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 16/05/2016 16:15

Maxi dresses are great if you are tall and thin. I'm tall with hefty great tits that need the support not provided by the smocking and thin straps of maxi dresses. Also, my DC realised they could hide under the last maxi dress I bought. turned it into a teepee Hmm

MizK · 16/05/2016 16:22

Not a fashionable look whatsoever but that doesn't mean it can't look nice. I don't wear leggings outside the gym but I can see how it works from a practical perspective....have inadvertently flashed my arse any times when getting DC in and out of the car.

And tbh would rather wear leggings with a dress than be caught dead in linen trousers which are just gross.
