No, they're great for people with short legs as they lengthen the leg over heels.

Personally my 'bootcuts' are skintight to the knee and then flare.

Roddas · 05/04/2016 12:45

I dont wear them as I honestly would not know what footwear to wear with them. I dont wear boots. I wear converse, vans & flip flops.

BabyGanoush · 05/04/2016 12:50

Yes scaevola

I found a pair of "Gap 1969" boot cuts from 10-15 yrs ago that still fit me the other day.

It makes my lower leggs look as big as my thighs... Elephant legs!

Hideous!

And Trinny and Susannah used to say they were flattering, wtf, have we been conned?!

Skinnies...where have you been all my life? My misspent 90s and noughties?!

IDismyname · 05/04/2016 12:51

I've discovered the M&S slim boot cut jeans which tread the fine line (in my book) between being better for my body shape, but not too 70's.

After all, I've 'done' the 70s already Wink

MsBojangles · 05/04/2016 12:51

Tight from thigh to knee then flaring out are the most flattering shape on me.

Any footwear, really.

The key is to always wear the same heel size with the same bootcut, though.

You don't want the hem to be too high if you wear higher heels, nor dragging through the floor if you wear lower heels.

Lweji · 05/04/2016 12:53

Bootcuts are also much better for Summer than skinny.

and that link www.next.co.uk/g3162s8#103210 is NOT bootcut.

Costacoffeeplease · 05/04/2016 12:54

You can wear any shoes with boot cuts

louloubelle2 · 05/04/2016 12:54

I think the biggest error with bootcuts can be in the length of the leg vs type of shoe. Too long with a flat trainer or shoe and you hide too much of the shoe, making your bottom half of your leg look bigger than it is as all you see to the floor is trouser. Too short and you are really into frump territory, especially with a heeled boot, and it can shorten your leg.

I think these get it right:

There's no way in this world I'll be wearing skinny jeans. My arse and thighs are never going to look good in them. I was wearing straight cut, but recently lost weight and as jeans shopping for a new style with a toddler fills me with terror I've delved into the depths of my wardrobe and dug out my old Bootcuts. I love them! No idea what the current 'trend' is, but it's always a bonus when shameless hording of clothes for long enough means they go full circle and come back into fashion again.

'And Trinny and Susannah used to say they were flattering, wtf, have we been conned?!

The only people who wore skinnies (or drainpipes as I think they were still known) in the 90s were the be-mulletted and defiantly unfashionable Iron Maiden fans. If someone had suggested you wear a pair then you'd probably have laughed in their face and clung lovingly to your baggier jeans.

Lweji · 05/04/2016 13:00

MitzyLeFrouf

Yes. :)

I still have some bootcuts from the 90s. They may be a bit tight around the waist...

coveredinhopeandvaseline · 05/04/2016 13:01

I used to love bootcut jeans at the turn of the century...I'm 5ft 5" and short of leg. I wore 30" leg ones with flats (converse, gazelles etc) and 32" leg ones with heels, usually tan wedges. I loved dark indigo bootcut Levi's.

I haven't had bootcut (or anything but skinny) jeans since about 2004...but am dreaming if a summer in flares this year if I can lose a stone or two of persistent baby weight first

Lweji · 05/04/2016 13:05

I really don't get why it should be all or nothing.
I love skinnies to wear inside my boots. And I love bootcuts to wear over the boots and many other styles. As well as straight cut.

(I have skinny legs, though)

redpriestandmozart · 05/04/2016 13:09

Tell me what should a size 8 52 yr old woman wear? Skinnies make me look like Max Wall so I wear boot cut! Is there something else I am missing?

oldlaundbooth · 05/04/2016 13:13

Depends on what shoes you wear, and the length.

Ankle grazing boot cuts with boots are horrendous. I know this because I wore this yesterday, caught sight of myself in the mirror at work and thought never again.

Same boot cuts worn with ballet flats would look OK.

Or tucked into knee length boots, so you don't see them.

They can be very flattering, balance out thigh chunk.

MitzyLeFrouf · 05/04/2016 13:14

Slim straight leg jeans suit just about everyone redpriest.

Straight legs with a bit of a turn up are a nice easy everyday kind of look. Other than that, at a size 8 you can wear whatever the hell you like Smile

BabyGanoush · 05/04/2016 13:17

Mitzy, yes, everyone.... Everyone who IS slim and straight legged Grin

mudandmayhem01 · 05/04/2016 13:18

My DD informed that mum cut jeans are very fashionable, obviously not on me though she pointed out! Still not quite sure what they are .

PrimalLass · 05/04/2016 13:20

I don't want to go back to flappy ankles. Long live the skinny. Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 05/04/2016 13:21

I think mom jeans are basically high waisted Levi 501 styles jeans that are loose around the thigh. I'm giving them the swerve as I'm sure they can only be worn by the slim and leggy non-moms.

Are boot cut jeans really bad?
mudandmayhem01 · 05/04/2016 13:25

Thanks mitzy, I think dd has a point, I think I would just look like I had been wearing the same jeans this 1991 if I wore those. They do look good though.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 05/04/2016 13:26

So hard to get the length right! It's down to millimetres. Millimetres to short and you're a frumpy lady visiting windmills. Millimetres too long - maybe a cool hippy look but you're dragging in all the dog wee etc on the pavements. 😞 then I. End up folding up the hems which looks even worse Wink for practicality I'm liking the skinnies as they behave - recently got a dog so lots of walking, unless wearing wellies these work best. Lookin forward to warmer weather so can get crops out. There again don't know what shoes I'll be wearing! Usually wear sandal but bit really practical for running after naughty dogs or thistles, nettles and bumpy bitsSmile

Lweji · 05/04/2016 13:29

Ah, mom jeans are 80s jeans then
