I live in straight and bootcut jeans! I went shopping for maternity trousers this time around and found that 99% of them are skinny style, I can't imagine anything less comfortable!

Twinklestein · 06/04/2016 20:42

When men talk about 'shapely legs' they're not talking about carrot tops!

Everylittlething87 · 06/04/2016 21:54

I don't think you can really define what a man sees as a shapely leg, I am sure everyone finds a different shape attractive.

LIZS · 06/04/2016 22:02

Hmm , was "inspired" to buy slim boot cut at m and s today (indigo) having had a pair a few years back which were really comfy. The lower leg is cut far too loose and not snug enough on the thigh. Any thoughts on less flappy, better cut ones please.

MakingJudySmile · 06/04/2016 23:10

LovePGtipsMonkey, I think bootcut widen lower in the leg (somewhere around halfway between the knee and the bottom) than flares (which start to widen at the knee); both are wider at the foot opening than at the knee, flares being wider than bootcut. There's probably a maximum for bootcut I'd have thought. (Bell bottoms widen around the ankle.)

I've always been a flared or skinny jean person. Don't like bootcut or straight on me (I've skinny legs and boy hips). 'Mum jeans' I feel are universally horrible.

ICanSeeForMiles · 06/04/2016 23:14

M&S indigo slim flares are amazing. Nicer than boot cut but v flattering.

LovePGtipsMonkey · 07/04/2016 00:37

thanks, Making! Then I do prefer bootcut unless flares are very thigh-hugging, otherwise they look too 'loose' - bootcuts are neater if flared lower down and not too much - but I'm not entirely sure that covers all the bootcut styles, if they are really wide from say, top of calf, then I don't like them at all.

I do think you need to go designer for the best of bootcut (or flares), whereas skinnies are much of muchness really - unless in very cheap thin fabric that is.
E.g. 7forallmankind always did great bootcut shapes - just very flattering proprtions.

I don't think anyone, male or female, is going to find carrot legs attractive Smile

Higge · 07/04/2016 08:20

Aren't most legs carrot shaped when naked? My legs get progressively larger from the ankle - my slim fit jeans just follow....and luckily my dh seems to quite like them.

Everylittlething87 · 07/04/2016 08:30

Costa I don't think you can decide that for every woman or male on earth. My legs are just as you described and my partner finds my legs very attractive. What kind of legs do you have? Shall we all judge yours and say no one would find them attractive with a smug little smile? Smile

BabyGanoush · 07/04/2016 08:34

Everylittlething, did you not read the meno that said women's legs must be straight up and down with a thigh gap?

Having thighs bigger than your calves is a no-no

Tut tut

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 07/04/2016 08:36

I think that if you replace what costa's 'carrot legs' with 'fat' you get a clearer picture. Because that's what it comes down to.

And yes, some men like women regardless of their size, and wearing whatever makes that individual woman feel good (regardless of whether it is fashionable or not).

BabyGanoush · 07/04/2016 08:37

My legs are not fat

My thigh muscles are bigger than my calf muscles.

Lots of humans have this, probably most?

Everylittlething87 · 07/04/2016 08:54

I must've missed the memo, my partner must have too because he would hate for me to lose my legs shape... Grin

Costacoffeeplease · 07/04/2016 09:28

I have hideous legs, which is why I don't wear skinny jeans - that's the whole point, we're not talking about naked legs, we're talking about skinny/bootcut/flared jeans. Skinnies are not flattering to a lot of people

PrimalLass · 07/04/2016 09:52

Surely most legs are wider at the top and narrow at the ankle?

Next relaxed skinnies were the best ever jeans, until Next ruined them by changing the fabric and the fit. I'm in a happy bubble today though as won three 'old style' pairs in a 12L on ebay so have enough pairs for another year or two now Grin I have never found jeans that suit me better than these (and I have fat thighs).

diddl · 07/04/2016 10:00

"until Next ruined them by changing the fabric and the fit."

Noooooo!

When did this happen?

Higge · 07/04/2016 10:16

Costa - bootcuts are also not universally flattering.... find a pair of jeans that work for you and your shape and style.
If you are so inclined you can without much effort observe some women wearing unflattering skinnies but there will be just as many wearing unflattering bootcuts with sagging fabric at the butt, over generous through the thigh, saggy knees and flapping ankles....there is no rule for all.

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/04/2016 10:18

Bootcuts aren't universally flattering but more often than not they're more forgiving than skinnies.

PrimalLass · 07/04/2016 10:25

When did this happen?

At least 1.5 years ago I would say, unless they have got better again. I grabbed a pair without trying them on to wear to my school reunion, and they were awful compared to the 'old' style.

PrimalLass · 07/04/2016 10:27

The reviews are now awful, and used to be great. Why would they ruin a 5/5 best seller like that?

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/04/2016 10:28

Few this more annoying in this world than when a retailer fucks around with one of your favourite products!

Costacoffeeplease · 07/04/2016 10:48

Yep

knowler · 07/04/2016 12:57

I'm a size 18 pear and my legs aren't my best feature but skinnies work for me if I wear longer length tunic tops/very short dresses with them. I like this look. I wouldn't wear a pair of skinnies with a short top as this would be unflattering on me. So I don't think you can directly compare skinnies and bootcut b/c they both lend themselves to different styles of dressing.

twistyfennel · 08/04/2016 00:36

I think anyone thin enough to be chasing a thigh gap is probably not remotely in danger of looking like a root vegetable - that look doesn't come from the normal widening as you go up a leg, but from something more extreme.

It's hardly a new idea that some fashions are best avoided by people with some body shapes whether it's fat or something else. I'd put skinnies in that category for the broad of arse, that's a world away from thinking we should all look like 12 year old boys.
