You know how some people refer to Primark as Primarni?? Well......

DH is convinced that the word Primarni is a cross between Primark and Armani (as in Giorgio Armani, posh suits etc).

But I always thought it was a combination of Primark and Marni (fashionista favourite). Who is right?

(please say me)

It's Armani round here too. A sarcastic poke at its quality and designer credentials, trying to make it sound posher than it is.

It's "Primani" round here not "Primarni"... So definitely Armani.

Armani. I've never heard of Marni

Armani, obviously.

Armani

When people say it out loud, they always (IME) say it the same way they would say the end of "Armani".

So either with or without the R sound depending on their accent.

It is definitely referring to Marni. Just because sone people don't know about Marni is not a valid reason for it not to be referring to that. The whole thing started when Marni was having a big moment.

PS I re registered after about 5 years off MN just to clarify this point (just so you know how right I am!) Grin

Very good point MrsSeanBean.
I've never heard of Marni so in my mind it couldn't have referred to that.
However that doesn't mean that the meaning is invalid.

CV, I am impressed that you are able to have this discussion with your DH at all. Mine wouldn't have a clue that people refer to it as PrimarniGrin

BTM - to tell you the truth, I was quite surprised myself. The whole debate began when he casually dropped the word into a discussion with the DCs, then tried to explain the derivation. They were totally uninterested

Thanks, MrsSB - you and I (and Laurie) know we're in the right here. Wink

I assumed Marni. Armani would be incredibly 80s.
I think urban dictionary is wrong.Grin
I would guess that fashion writers dubbed it Primarni and they'd be more into Marni than Armani.

Amazed so many posters haven't heard of Marni, though.

Completely agree with earlier poster who pointed out that Primark don't do the Armani look. It would make no sense to be a hybrid of Armani for that reason alone.

Definitely Marni, as coined by fashion pack who at the time loved Marni. Also Primark not known for it's sharp suiting Grin. Pretty irrelevant that a lot of people haven't heard of Marni given the origins.

I always thought Primani anyway, never Primarni.
Quick Google and loads of 'Primani' (Primark/Armani) mash-ups, even the 'PrimaRni' ones have the Armani logo incorporated.

Therefore, after very limited research, I would say that most people are mixing it with Armani. Grin

I had never heard of Marni and always assumed it was Armani, but having looked up Marni I must concede that it makes more sense!

BunnyTyler · 21/02/2016 19:52

Maybe the fashionistas coined the 'Primarni' phrase as an in-joke and then the uneducated-in-fashion masses like me made the assumption that it was Armani and from there it has become the new truth.

I assume Armani followed Marni when the term became mainstream and people who hadn't heard of Marni (majority of Primark's core customer base probably) started using it.
